Notizen: A Bragg spectrometer for monitoring impurity radiation of hydrogenlike carbon and oxygen at the tokamak ASDEX Upgrade is presented. The use of fast multistrip proportional counters allows soft x-ray photon counting with count rates above 1 MHz in a simple arrangement. The absolute calibration was performed using a large area x-ray tube with a LiF anode. The concentrations of both impurities are calculated using the coronal model both for ionization and electron impact excitation. The results of the measurements concerning the long term behavior before and after conditioning of the torus walls by boronization as well as the fast plasma processes are presented. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A spatially scanning, combined vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) and visible range spectrometer system for the spectroscopy of tokamak plasmas in the ASDEX-Upgrade experiment is described. This system is designed to allow flexible observation of about 2/3 of the boundary plasma using VUV (30–200 nm) and visible range spectrometers viewing along a common line of sight which can be scanned during the plasma discharge by means of a rotatable mirror. From successive spectra recorded using intensified, multichannel photodiode detectors and the recorded position data, spatial profiles of the plasma emission can be reconstructed. Because radiation losses from the boundary plasma can largely be attributed to line emission in the VUV spectral region, this instrument finds application in quantitative studies of radiation loss processes as well as to studies of impurity production and transport. Simultaneous observation in the visible spectral range facilitates an in situ absolute calibration of the VUV instrument by means of the "branching-ratios'' technique. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: For absolute soft-x-ray line intensity measurements to deduce elemental concentrations and parameters of magnetically confined plasmas large-area x-ray sources are developed and investigated. These calibration sources use K, L, and M transitions in different elements and cover a wide photon energy (and wavelength) range. From the measured absolute line intensities of these sources the quantum efficiency values of numerous elements for K-, L-, and M-line emission per incident electron are deduced. They represent the basis of simple soft-x-ray monitors for impurities in fusion plasmas. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The highly resolved spectra of the silicon multiplet around 251 nm are studied for plasmas in front of a C/C-SiC target interacting with a nearly cylindrically symmetric low temperature plasma jet. The erosion rates from this target are deduced from the silicon density distribution, which is determined from the line intensity ratios and details of the line profiles. Under the conditions of the plasma parameters in this plasma-target interaction experiment these spectral line parameters depend on the optical depths of the emitting and absorbing silicon atoms along the line of sight. The spectral line central branching ratios of lines with quite different products of absorption oscillator strength and statistical weight are most sensitive to the optical depth. In the case of high plasma jet currents the density of the eroded silicon is found to reach values of up to 5×1018 m−3 in agreement with gravimetric measurements. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Summary Bilophila wadsworthia is an obligately anaerobic, gram-negative rod, which was first described in 1989. The natural habitat of this species seems to be the lower intestinal tract where it was recovered from about 60% of the persons investigated. Bilophila wadsworthia is mainly associated with intra-abdominal infections, but the species was also isolated as part of aerobic-anaerobic mixed infections at various extra-abdominal sites. Otological infections due to Bilophila wadsworthia have as yet not been described. In the present paper, we report a case of a patient with postoperative otitis externa following stapedectomy, probably caused by the anaerobes Becteroides fragilis and Bilophila wadsworthia.

Notizen: Abstract Several functions of the gut are locally influenced by peptides and biogenic amines released from enteroendocrine cells. The aim of the present study was to assess whether the luminal stimulus of diet or microbial flora or diet-microbial interactions have an influence on the distribution of enteroendocrine cells along the crypt-surface axes of the small and large intestine. The effects of diet and indigenous flora were investigated by comparing the numbers of argyrophil and serotonin immunoreactive cells in the jejunum and colon of germ free and conventional rats fed either a purified diet containing fine ingredients or a commercial diet containing crude fibre of cereal origin. The effects of human flora were analysed in germ-free rats inoculated with human faecal organisms. 1. Feeding the commercial diet reduced the number of argyrophil endocrine cells in the jejunum and serotonin immunoreactive cells in the colon of gern-free animals but increased the serotonin immunoreactive cells in the colon of conventional animals. 2. The rat flora increased the serotonin immunoreactive cells in the colon of animals fed a commercial diet and decreased in those fed a purified diet. 3. Inculation of human flora increased the numbers of serotonin immunoreactive cells both in the jejunum and colon. The results provide evidence that the dietary changes and diet-microbial interactions can affect the regional number of enteroendocrine cells.

Notizen: Abstract. The presence of nutrients in the intestinal lumen is a major factor influencing bacterial colonization in poultry. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of poultry feed on viscosity of intestinal contents and on mucin carbohydrates by comparing jejunal supernatants and the histochemical composition of goblet cells in chicks reared to 5 weeks of age on either a conventional maize-based diet or a wheat-based diet or a wheat diet supplemented with 0.1% xylanase. Regional differences in the distribution of the neutral, carboxylated and sulphated mucins were demonstrated using conventional histochemical techniques, while a panel of lectins was used to study alterations in glycoconjugate synthesis of mucins in chicks fed different diets. 1) Feeding a diet supplemented with xylanase lowered the viscosity but increased the amount of neutral, carboxylated and sulphated mucins in the jejunum. 2) In chicks fed a maize-based diet, neutral mucins increased in the surface and upper crypt goblet cells of the small and large intestines but decreased in the caecum. 3) Feeding a diet supplemented with xylanase modified crypt-surface glycosylation of N-acetylglucosamine residues and resulted in loss of sialic acid residues in the small and large intestines. These results indicate that the constituents of poultry feed, in particular the consumption of a diet supplemented with xylanase, lead to changes in intestinal viscosity and mucin composition which are associated with alterations in the goblet cell glycoconjugates of the chick intestinal tract.
