Notes: The temperature dependence of the energy gap of zinc-blende CdSe and Cd1−xZnxSe has been determined over the entire range of composition from optical transmission and reflection measurements at temperatures between 5 and 300 K. The experimental results can be expressed by the following modified empirical Varshni formula, whose parameters are functions of the composition x: Eg(x,T)=Eg(x,0)−β(x)T2/[T+γ(x)]. Eg(x,0) exhibits a nonlinear dependence on composition, according to Eg=Eg(0,0)(1−x)+Eg(1,0)x−ax(1−x). The parameters β(x) and γ(x) can be expressed by β(x)=β(0)(1−x)+β(1)x+bx(1−x) and γ(x)=γ(0)(1−x)+γ(1)x. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have investigated optical properties of ZnTe epilayers, Zn1−xMgxSeyTe1−y epilayers, and ZnTe/Zn1−xMgxSeyTe1−y quantum wells (QWs) grown on (100)-InAs substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. We observed several sharp photoluminescence lines close to the excitonic position and no detectable luminescence from deep levels in ZnTe epilayers. Bright luminescence has been obtained from Zn1−xMgxSeyTe1−y epilayers which are lattice matched with InAs. The band alignment of ZnTe/Zn1−xMgxTe QWs was found to be type I. The reduction of the band gap energy of the ZnTe layer due to a tensile strain was confirmed in this structure. Nearly lattice-matched ZnTe/Zn1−xMgxSeyTe1−y QWs have been fabricated. A type II band alignment was observed for many of these QWs. We estimated bowing parameters not only of the band gap but also of the valence band for ZnSeyTe1−y. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Talk- Chlorit-Amphibol-Felse der KTB-Vorbohrung, Oberpfalz: Eduktcharakteristik und Phasenbeziehungen Die Metagabbro-Amphibolit-Folge in der KTB-Vorbohrung enthält Einschaltungen von Talk-Chlorit-Amphibol-Felsen (“Hosbachite”), die graduelle Übergänge zu den benachbarten Metagabbros aufweisen.
Notes: Summary The metagabbro-amphibolite sequences in the KTB pilot hole contain intercalations of talc-chlorite-amphibole felses (or “hosbachites”), which show transitional contacts to the adjacent metagabbros. The hosbachites are characterized by relics of a primary igneous texture and still contain igneous minerals like clinopyroxene, biotite and pseudomorphs after olivine, while brown Ca-amphibole was presumably formed in a late-magmatic stage. The geological, textural, mineralogical and geochemical evidence indicates that the hösbachites were derived from ultramafic cumulates, differentiated from a basaltic magma, either in the inner parts of dolerite sills or in small gabbro intrusions. A pervasive metamorphic overprint under medium-pressure, amphibolite-facies conditions which was accompanied by penetrative deformation led to assemblages with green Ca-amphibole ± anthophyllite ± cummingtonite ± tremolite/actinolite + clinochlore + talc + olivine + ilmenite ± Cr-bearing spinel + sulfides. Phase relationships are consistent with a prograde P-T path leading to the formation of anthophyllite from olivine + talc at peak metamorphic temperatures of 640–700°C, at assumed pressures of 8-10 kbar, similar to those derived from mineral assemblages in the adjacent metabasites and metasediments. High-pressure relics locally present in coronitic metagabbros and retrograded eclogites of the KTB pilot hole were not recognized in the hosbachites. A retrograde overprint under greenschist-facies conditions led to the total replacement of igneous or metamorphic olivine by aggregates of antigorite + magnetite, chloritization of biotite and the formation of late tremolite/ actinolite.

Notes: Abstract  K–Ar and Rb–Sr age determinations on muscovites and biotites and K–Ar age determinations on amphiboles are presented for leucocratic gneisses, amphibolites and (meta-)igneous rocks from the Zone of Erbendorf Vohenstrauss (ZEV) and the KTB boreholes located in the northeastern ZEV and leucocratic gneisses from the Erbendorf Greenschist zone (EGZ). The investigations were carried out to contribute to the knowledge of the tectonothermal evolution of the area and to the response of the isotope systems to retrograde processes including recent elevated in- situ temperatures in the boreholes. A memory of an early Ordovician igneous event is given by Rb–Sr ages of 480±5–475±5 Ma obtained on very coarse-grained relic igneous muscovites of metapegmatites from the ZEV. This memory is missing in micas from peg matoids of the drill site. Coarse-grained muscovites of gneisses from ZEV and EGZ surface outcrops and of gneisses and pegmatoids from the boreholes yielded maximum K–Ar ages of 377±3–371±3 Ma related to the end of the Devonian regional metamorphism in both units. Consistent K–Ar and Rb–Sr apparent ages of some muscovites from surface outcrops point to a fast cooling of the metamorphic rocks due to rapid tectonic uplift. The lack of a depth-related gradient in model ages of coarse-grained KTB muscovites is explained by post-Variscan stacking processes. For minerals from intermediate to greater depths of the KTB, a strong age dependence on grain size and disturbances of the isotope systems due to various late- to post-Variscan retrograde processes can be demonstrated. A strong decrease in K–Ar model ages with increasing depth as obtained for biotites from the deepest section of the HB borehole probably indicates time-integrated response of the isotope system to elevated in situ temperatures.
