    Notes: We investigated the possibility of inferring effective hydraulic properties of soil from the structure of the pore space. The aim was to identify structural properties, which are essential for water flow, so that physical experiments may be replaced by direct morphological measurements. The pore structure was investigated in three dimensions by serial sections through impregnated samples. The complex geometry of pore space was quantified in terms of two characteristics: pore-size distribution and pore connectivity. Only pores larger than 0.04 mm were considered. The results were used as input parameters for a pore-scale network model. The main desorption branch of the soil-water characteristic and the corresponding hydraulic conductivity function of the network model were calculated by numerical simulation. The simulation results, which are exclusively based on morphological investigations, were compared with independently measured results from a multi-step outflow experiment. This approach was demonstrated for two centrasting soil materials: the A and B horizons of a silty agricultural soil. The simulations were close to the experimental data, except for the absolute values of the hydraulic conductivity. The pore-size distribution and pore connectivity govern the shape of hydraulic functions and the applied morphometric methods are suitable for predicting essential characteristics of hydraulic soil properties.

    Notes: Infrared cavity ringdown laser absorption spectroscopy has been used to study the O–H stretching vibrations of jet-cooled methanol clusters in direct absorption. Rovibrational bands for (CH3OH)2, (CH3OH)3, and (CH3OH)4 have been measured. Both bonded and free O–H stretches were measured for the dimer, indicating that its structure is linear. Five bands were assigned to the methanol trimer, indicating the presence of a second cyclic isomer in the molecular beam. A detailed study of the free O–H stretching region shows that methanol clusters larger than dimer must exist in cyclic ring configurations. In order to facilitate spectral assignment, harmonic frequencies and infrared intensities were calculated for the methanol monomer, dimer, and trimer with second order Møller–Plesset perturbation theory. Using the theoretical infrared intensities and measured vibrational band absorptions, absolute cluster concentrations were calculated. Results agree with previous experimental and theoretical work. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: As a consequence of spatial heterogeneity, solute transport and associated phenomena of soil in the field are typically complex and often poorly described by current one-dimensional models. Therefore, better descriptions should be obtained if the specific variation of the soil is explicitly accounted for. To test this hypothesis, we simulated the two-dimensional transport of a bromide trace in pore-water velocity fields which varied in both space and time. We used data obtained in a field experiment in which we studied bromide transport as input parameters and boundary conditions for the simulation. We conceptualized heterogeneity at two spatial scales. Large regions with constant spatial properties were defined by the measured geometry of the soil’s horizons. On these we superimposed small structures derived from a correlated random field of scaling factors and conditioned on measured hydraulic properties. Simulations with homogeneous and heterogeneous horizons show that both coarse and fine hydraulic variation contribute to characteristic experimental phenomena such as concentration ‘hot spots’, especially near irregularities of horizon boundaries, and early breakthrough of solute leading to large dispersion at the field scale. The comparison between simulation and experimental results demonstrates that these features are reproduced if local hydraulic variation is included in the description of the transport. As expected, the quantitative agreement is limited, since the concentration distribution is strongly sensitive to local hydraulic conditions which were only partly accounted for by the measurements.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) is a molecular cytogenetic method for the detection of chromosomal imbalances between a tumor and a normal genome. In order to produce quantitative and reproducible results, we developed an image analysis program that allows the detection and mapping of the genetic alterations. The result is represented as a CGH sum karyogram in which the genetic changes are documented as color coded-chromosomes. The aim of our investigation is to correlate the genotype with the phenotype on the basis of CGH sum karyograms and thus to achieve a genetic characterization that will supplement the morphological tumor description.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die komparative genomische Hybridisierung („comparative genomic hybridization“, CGH) ist ein molekularzytogenetisches Verfahren, welches die umfassende Analyse eines Tumorgenoms auf Über- und Unterrepräsentationen von DNA-Abschnitten ermöglicht. Um quantitative und reproduzierbare Aussagen über die genetischen Aberrationen machen zu können, wurde eine Software entwickelt, welche die objektive Erfassung von Ort und Art der Veränderungen ermöglicht. Das Ergebnis wird in Form eines CGH-Summenkaryogramms dargestellt, welches die genetischen Veränderungen als farbkodierte Chromosomen dokumentiert. Ziel dieser Untersuchungen ist es, auf der Grundlage von Summen-Karyogrammen eine Korrelation zwischen Genotyp und Phänotyp herzustellen und damit eine genetische Charakterisierung von Tumoren zu erreichen, die die morphologische Beschreibung ergänzt.

    Notes: Abstract. The assistance received by the surgeon from support personnel during surgical laparoscopy is extremely important. This includes the retracting of instruments and the positioning of the endoscope. However, human assistance is costly and often does not provide satisfaction for the surgeon. The aim of the project was to develop a mechanical arm capable of manipulating a laparoscopic instrument under the control of the operating surgeon. The system design is based on a particular kinematic construction that maintains an invariant point of constraint motion coincident with the trocar puncture site through the abdominal wall. The guidance system allows transparent and intuitive operation, and its setup is easy and quick. It may be adapted either as an instrument retractor or as an optic positioning device. A new generation of instrument positioning systems, with improved ergonomy, will be a first step toward the diffusion of solo surgery techniques in minimally invasive therapy. We believe this prototype represents a valid compromise between human and robotic control for conventional laparoscopic instruments.
