    Notes: We present coplanar resonator measurements of the nonlinear microwave surface impedance of laser ablated and electron-beam coevaporated YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films at 8 GHz in zero and applied magnetic fields, including the effects of irradiation with heavy ions. Correlations between the changes in surface resistance and reactance as a function of microwave current suggest that there are different contributions to the nonlinear behavior at low and high microwave currents in both zero and applied fields. In zero field, we suggest that microwave-induced flux lines are responsible for the observed nonlinear behavior, resulting in thermal runaway at large, sample dependent, microwave currents. The observed nonlinearity completely masks any possible contribution from the intrinsic pair breaking expected for a d-wave superconductor. In a magnetic field at relatively low currents, the nonlinearity can be described by the nonlinear dynamics of flux lines pinned by defects with a continuous range of pinning strengths. At higher currents, microwave field nucleation of flux lines is again considered important. On irradiation with 3.6 MeV/nucleon Xe-129 ions, the microwave losses and nonlinearity are significantly decreased in both zero and applied fields, which could have important implications for microwave device applications. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

The thresholds for deleterious effects of hypoxaemia on the heart and central nervous system are reviewed and the problems of assessment of the adequacy of tissue oxygenation are outlined.     Notes: The existence of patchy stomatal closure suggests interactions among neighbouring stomata that synchronize stomatal movements in small areas of a leaf. To test for such interactions, water vapour partial pressure (ewv) for a small group of stomata was controlled independently of that for the surrounding stomata using gas flow from a small needle. The ewv for the surrounding stomata was controlled with a larger gas flow, termed the primary flow. The spatial pattern of ewv isobars caused by the needle flow was assessed experimentally and theoretically. Stomatal apertures were monitored following perturbations in ewv of the primary flow and the needle flow. When ewv of the primary flow was perturbed and that of the needle flow held constant, stomata for which there was little or no perturbation in ewv responded similarly to stomata experiencing the perturbation. When the ewv of the needle flow was perturbed and that of the primary flow held constant, many stomata experiencing little or no perturbation responded similarly to those experiencing a large perturbation. The results are discussed in relation to a mechanism for stomatal interactions that has been proposed in a previous study [Haefner, Buckley & Mott (1997) Plant, Cell and Environment 20, 1087–1097, this issue].

    Notes: Pseudomonas fluorescens F113 and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia W81 protect sugar beet from Pythium-mediated damping-off through production of the antifungal secondary metabolite 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol and extracellular proteolytic activity, respectively. In this study, the two biocontrol strains were combined in a consortium, with the objective of improving upon the level of protection achieved when using each strain singly. Growth and in vitro production of 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol by F113 and extracellular lytic enzymes by W81 were not affected when inoculated in combination. The abilities of W81 and F113 to colonize the rhizosphere of sugar beet were essentially similar when the two strains were applied singly or coinoculated onto seeds in a 1 : 1 ratio, both in natural soil microcosms and under field conditions. Concomitantly, single inoculation with W81 or F113 effectively prevented colonization of sugar beet seeds by Pythium spp. in soil microcosms, without the necessity for combining both strains. However, this parity was not reflected in seed emergence where the combination of W81 and F113 significantly enhanced final sugar beet stands (to the level achieved with chemical pesticides) under microcosm conditions at 28 days after sowing. In a field experiment, the only inoculation treatment capable of conferring effective protection of sugar beet was that in which W81 and F113 were coinoculated, and this treatment proved equivalent to the use of chemical fungicides. In conclusion, when compared with single inoculations of either biocontrol strain, the combined use of a phloroglucinol-producing P. fluorescens and a proteolytic S. maltophilia improved protection of sugar beet against Pythium-mediated damping-off.

    Notes: Oral iron supplements, which are usually in the form of ferrous (Fe2+) salts, are toxic to the gastrointestinal mucosa, and so intolerance is common, resulting in poor compliance and failure of treatment. The sugar derivative maltol strongly chelates iron, rendering it available for absorption and stabilized in the less toxic ferric (Fe3+) form.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Aim:To test whether ferric trimaltol could correct iron deficiency anaemia in patients intolerant of ferrous sulphate.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:Twenty-three patients were recruited from gastroenterology clinics, of whom 15 had inflammatory bowel disease, a group often difficult to treat with oral iron. Patients with iron deficiency anaemia and documented intolerance to ferrous sulphate were given 3 months of treatment with ferric trimaltol.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:Nineteen of 23 patients completed the treatment and anaemia was fully corrected in 14 of these, mean haemoglobin increased from 106 ± 15 to 126 ± 16 g/L, and there was a particularly low incidence of side-effects. Of 11 patients with inflammatory bowel disease who completed the study, nine fully corrected their anaemia.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusion:The results demonstrate that in patients intolerant of ferrous compounds, ferric trimaltol corrects iron deficiency and has a low incidence of side-effects.

    Notes: Abstract  The biocontrol agent Pseudomonas fluorescens F113, which produces the antimicrobial compound 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol and inhibits soil-borne phytopathogenic fungi, might also affect non-target resident microorganisms involved in the cycling of soil nutrients. Analyses of soil nutrients and crop foliage were used to assess possible residual effects of the pseudomonad on soil fertility. The Bandon field site was sown in 1994 with sugarbeet seeds that were either untreated, inoculated with the spontaneous rifampicin-resistant mutant F113Rif, or treated with chemical fungicides. The field was cropped with uninoculated red clover in 1995. The inoculant was recovered at only 2.0 log CFU/root system at the first harvest of clovers, and the F113Rif treatment influenced 5 of 17 levels of readily available nutrients determined by electro-ultrafiltration (EUF) analysis of soil. However, this effect was essentially negligible since it was (1) small in magnitude and of little agronomic significance when compared with reference EUF levels, (2) similar in part to those of the commercial seed treatment and other farming practices followed at Bandon, and (3) not statistically significant when data were analysed at the plot level rather than using results from individual soil samples within plots. Clover leaf composition was investigated at two harvests. The F113Rif treatment had no effect on the 20 foliage parameters studied except a small (15%) transient decrease in foliage chlorine at the first harvest. EUF soil analysis and foliage analysis will be useful in future risk assessment studies of genetically modified derivatives of F113.
