Notes: A molecular beam apparatus which was formerly used for crossed molecular beam chemiluminescence experiments under high vacuum conditions has been modified into an ultrahigh vacuum apparatus with a rotatable mass spectrometer detector equipped with an electron bombardment ionizer to study (1) the molecule-surface scattering process, (2) molecular beam-surface reaction dynamics, and (3) light-excited molecular desorption. Every flange surface originally sealed using a Viton o ring is sealed with a combination of an inner spring-loaded Teflon or aluminum seal with an outer Viton o ring, the intermediate region being pumped with a diffusion pump. Due to the limited space available for a rotatable detector chamber and to make the neutral flight length in time-of-flight (TOF) measurements as long as possible, the electron bombardment ionizer is installed at the farthest end of a triply differentially pumped detector chamber; thus, the ions formed are extracted toward the reverse direction of the scattered neutral molecular beam, mass selected with a quadrupole mass filter, and detected by an electron multiplier. Using this apparatus, angular and TOF distributions have been measured for Xe scattered from crystalline graphite surface and for the desorbed product, SiCl2, from the etching reaction of Si(111) with a beam of hyperthermal Cl2 molecules. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have succeeded in synchrotron radiation (SR) excited etching of crystalline diamond. It proceeds even at low temperatures at which diamond is thermally not oxidized in the gaseous environment. It has been demonstrated that any of the three types of crystalline diamond, i.e., industrial diamond made at high pressures, thin films grown by chemical vapor deposition, and natural diamond, can be etched by irradiating SR in the O2 atmosphere. From the etched pattern obtained by placing a Ni mesh made of 40 μm wires above the sample, it has been concluded that only the irradiated area is etched and thus surface excitation by SR is essential along with the supply of reactive radical species formed by photodissociation. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The figure-8 undulator is a novel insertion device adopted as a light source at the soft x-ray photochemistry beamline of the Super Photon ring-8GeV. It was designed to produce linearly polarized soft x rays between 100 and 5000 eV with low on-axis power density. Magnetic fields of the constructed device were measured with compensation for the planar Hall effect using two different methods. After magnetic-field corrections, it was found that the first-harmonic intensity and the on-axis power density calculated using the measured fields were almost the same as ideal ones. After installation in the storage ring, a power-distribution pattern was observed by a fluorescent screen and it was found that the shape corresponded to expectation. The quantity of fluctuation of the photon-beam axis was estimated by measuring spectra at various observation angles and it was found to be small compared to the photon-beam size. In addition, it was also found that the measured spectrum at the gap of 77 mm agreed well with the calculated one. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: SPring-8 is constructing most of its beamlines using a combination of standardized components. The structures of the beamlines are also standardized according to the light-source characteristics. Specifications of components as well as the unified method of assembly and alignment are described.
