    Notes: X-ray diffraction was performed in situ during annealing of a Co/Ti/Si(001) multilayer, which produced an epitaxial CoSi2 layer. The results indicate that the Ti layer did not stay intact during the reaction, and thus could not act like a membrane, moderating Co/Si interdiffusion. Strongly textured phases (M) formed prior to CoSi2 nucleation, and was unobservable upon completion of the anneal. Nucleation and growth of CoSi2 on Si(001) took place in the presence of M, new Co-Ti-(O) phases that were located at the metal/Si interface, and thus M might play an important role in the perfection of the silicide. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract In this review we discuss various recent topics that characterize functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). These topics include a brief description of MRI image acquisition, how to cope with noise or signal fluctuation, the basis of fMRI signal changes, and the relation of MRI signal to neuronal events. Several observations of fMRI that show good correlation to the neurofunction are referred to. Temporal characteristics of fMRI signals and examples of how the feature of real time measurement is utilized are then described. The question of spatial resolution of fMRI, which must be dictated by the vascular structure serving the functional system, is discussed based on various fMRI observations. Finally, the advantage of fMRI mapping is shown in a few examples. Reviewing the vast number of recent fMRI application that have now been reported is beyond the scope of this article.

    Notes: The depth profile of a Co (300 A(ring))/Ti (50 A(ring)) bilayer on Si(100) is studied by nondestructive refracted x-ray fluorescence before and after annealing. Following annealing, the angular distribution of the x-ray fluorescence indicates an inversion of the Co and Ti layers and the formation of CoSi2. These were confirmed by cross-section transmission electron microscopy and x-ray nanoprobe measurements. This success suggests that refracted x-ray fluorescence, which can be used as an in situ probe, may be ideally suited for analysis of thin-film reactions and interdiffusion. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Microcrystalline cellulose was dispersed as a gritty substance in an emulsion, and sensory evaluation was conducted to examine the effect of the presence of oil on grittiness felt in the mouth. Samples were prepared with three types of microcrystalline cellulose of average particle size 14, 38, and 76 μm and with a concentration in water of 0.03–2.7%, with three types of emulsion with an oil-volume fraction of 0.2–0.7, and with three rates of homogenization of 500–15,000 rpm. The flow behavior and loss modulus of each sample were measured and sensory evaluation was made of the perceived grittiness. A multiple regression analysis of the data shows that the proportion of people who could perceive grittiness was influenced by the following factors and in that order: concentration of microcrystalline cellulose, oil droplet size, loss modulus, and particle size of microcrystalline cellulose. The proportion of people who perceived grittiness also increased with increasing oil droplet size. This was conceivably caused by the uneven distribution of microcrystalline cellulose particles promoted by large oil droplets. An equation was developed relating the proportion of people perceiving grittiness to the physical properties of the sample. The result indicates that factors effecting grittiness perception are identical for emulsions, aqueous suspensions, viscous suspensions and gels, studied previously.

    Notes: Abstract Profiles of the genomic DNA of 104 strains ofT. equigenitalis isolated from brood mares with contagious equine metritis in Hokkaido during the breeding seasons from 1980 to 1993, as well as those of five strains (SS28, EQ56, EQ59, EQ70 and HH139) previously isolated in Japan were examined after restriction digestion and crossed-field gel electrophoresis. These profiles were essentially identical to each other and the various isolates and strains appeared to have a common genotype, designated ‘genotype J’, with respect to two restriction enzymes,ApaI andNotI. These results suggest a common source for all these isolates obtained over the course of more than 10 years in Japan.
