    Notes: We report a study of the steady-state photoconducting properties in the conjugated polymer poly(2,5-dimethoxy-p-phenylene vinylene) using the sandwich and surface cell configurations. The photocurrent spectral response in both the configurations is nearly identical with the onset of the photocurrent around the band edge. The rise in the photocurrent is more gradual than the increase in absorption with respect to the photon energy and the peaks in the photocurrent responses are separated from the absorption maxima by nearly 1 eV. The chopper frequency, electric field, and the intensity dependence of the photocurrent are remarkably different for the two configurations. We speculate on the mechanisms leading to such differences. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The electronic properties of the ladder polymer BBL are investigated using steady state and transient photoconductivity techniques. The photocurrent response of the polymer film in the surface cell and sandwich cell configurations are compared along with the absorption spectra and the results correlated with the surface and bulk morphology. The steady state photocurrent shows a nonlinear response with respect to the electric field, and the photocurrent spectral response is accompanied by a significant tailing in the infrared region. The photocurrent is also studied as a function of photon intensity and chopper frequency. A long lived transient photocurrent ((approximately-greater-than)100 ms) is present on exposure to nanosecond laser pulses revealing the presence of deep traps. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: CdS nanoparticles exhibit size dependent optical and electrical properties. We report here the photocurrent and I–V characteristic studies of CdS nanoparticle devices. A sizable short circuit photocurrent was observed in the detection range governed by the size of the clusters. We speculate on the mechanisms leading to the photocurrent and emission in these nanometer scale systems. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Dual properties of photoconduction and electroluminescence (EL) in hybrid devices consisting of a nanocluster semiconductor layer and a polymer are reported. It is observed that the photocurrent spectral response and efficiency in these multilayer devices are similar to that of the semiconductor component, while the EL spectral responses are closer to that of the polymer layer. The results are confirmed using the nanoparticle semiconductor, cadmium sulphide CdS, of different particle sizes and polymers representing a wide spectral range. A general feature of efficient photocurrent spectral response corresponding to nanoparticle and an appreciable EL response corresponding more to the active polymer are observed in all devices and results in wide, separated spectral windows. Current–voltage responses also indicate possibilities of added tunability in these devices. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Photodetection properties of nanocrystalline titanium dioxide, TiO2, dispersed in poly-2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethyl-hexoxy)-1,4 paraphenylenevinylene MEHPPV are studied. Responsivity as high as 50 mA/W is observed in the single-layered composite device. The spectral response is sensitive to the magnitude of the bias in the low-voltage range and the crossover from a symbatic to antibatic response is closely followed. At higher reverse bias, the response is relatively uniform throughout the entire spectral range. Differences in the switching response in the forward bias and reverse bias are observed with a pronounced effect of the persistence photocurrent in the forward bias. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
