Notes: Infrared molecular beam depletion spectroscopy has been employed to study the vibrational spectroscopy of water molecules and small water polymers [(H2O)n, n=2,3,4] embedded in large liquid helium clusters (HeN, 100≤〈N〉≤5000). The spectral region between 3500 and 3800 cm−1 was covered with an injection-seeded optical parametric oscillator. The following vibrational bands could be located and investigated: for the monomer the ν3 asymmetric stretch, for the dimer the asymmetric stretch of the proton acceptor molecule and the free and bonded O–H stretches of the donor molecule, for the trimer both free and bonded O–H stretches, and for the tetramer the free O–H stretch. By comparison with the data on free gas phase water complexes, it was found that the helium host clusters induce only minor perturbations in form of small frequency redshifts and that they constitute an ideal nano-matrix. Furthermore, it was found that both the water molecule and the dimer rotate almost freely in the host cluster and that the internal-rotationlike tunneling motion of the water dimer is not quenched. Due to the extremely low internal temperatures, a splitting of the trimer band associated with the O–H ring vibration could be resolved for the first time. This splitting indicates that the trimer structure is asymmetric, as has been predicted by theoretical calculations. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The caries status of 1784 children aged 7 to 10 years was examined in a cross-sectional, epidemiological study in the Rhine-Neckar-District. Results showed that 30.5% of the children had caries-free primary and 65.2% had caries-free permanent teeth. The d(m)ft index was 2.68, and the D(M)FT averaged 0.76. As in previous studies, a high risk caries group was found, with 10% of all children showing more than 50% of all carious and filled teeth in the permanent dentition. Overall, 45.6% of the children's primary teeth and 16.3% of their permanent teeth needed treatment. As indicated by higher DT:FT (DT:FT) ratios in younger age groups, dentists preferred treating older children. Apart from a higher caries prevalence in primary teeth in males, no significant sex differences were found. Children of rural origin had a higher caries experience. The results confirm previous data showing considerable improvements with a declining caries experience in the young population. But the caries status of German pre-teenage children is still moderately high according to WHO criteria. For further improvements, considerable efforts have to be made with special emphasis on prevention in high risk caries groups.

Notes: The O–H ring vibrations of the methanol trimer have been measured employing molecular beam depletion spectroscopy in combination with mass spectrometric detection and kinematic size selection. Three vibrational bands (at 3434, 3472, and 3503 cm−1, respectively) have been identified as being due to the methanol trimer. The observation of three bands is consistent with the asymmetric ring structure predicted by theoretical calculations. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We investigate the dynamics of an ideal polymer chain which is tethered with one of its ends to an impenetrable interface. Due to the geometric restrictions the relaxation of modes perpendicular to the interface differs significantly from that of modes parallel to it. A superposition of both components leads to a marked broadening of the relaxation spectrum, which may find its signature in dielectric measurements. We obtain the relevant dynamical quantities for a polymer chain subject to geometric constraints by use of the Smoluchowski equation combined with a Rayleigh-Ritz variational scheme. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
