Notes: Abstract The GRANAT observatory was launched into a high apogee orbit on 1 December, 1989. Three instruments onboard GRANAT - PHEBUS, WATCH and SIGMA are able to detect gamma-ray bursts in a very broad energy range from 6 keV up to 100 MeV. Over 250 gamma-ray bursts were detected. We discuss the results of the observations of the time histories and spectral evolution of the detected events provided by the different instruments in different energy ranges. Short Gamma-Ray Bursts (〈 2 s) have 10 ms structure in their time histories. They have harder energy spectra than the long (〉 2 s) events. Evidence of the existence of four differently behaving componenents in gamma-ray burst spectra is discussed. Statistical properties of the gamma-ray burst sources based on the 5 years of observations with (∼ 10−6 erg/cm2) sensitivity as well as the results of high sensitivity (∼ 10−8 erg/cm2) search for Gamma-Ray Bursts within the SIGMA telescope field of view are reviewed.

Notes: Abstract We have studied the first WATCH GRB Catalogue ofγ-ray Bursts in order to find correlations between WATCH GRB error boxes and a great variety of celestial objects present in 33 different catalogues. No particular class of objects has been found to be significantly correlated with the WATCH GRBs.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Repetitive magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive, painless method to induce transient activation in circumscript regions of the human cortex. In contrast to TMS with single pulses rTMS allows a more effective stimulation of association cortex and temporary interference with the proper functioning of stimulated areas. Possible applications for examination of the functional anatomy of language lateralisation, memory functions and visual perception are discussed. Possible therapeutic for movement disorders and depression are discussed. On the basis of theoretical considerations and current experience rTMS induced epileptogenic effects are discussed and safety recommendations are given.

Notes: Abstract  We investigated the role of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) in a visuospatial delayed-response task in humans. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (20 Hz, 0.5 s) was used to interfere temporarily with cortical activity in the DLPFC and PPC during the delay period. Omnidirectional memory-guided saccades with a 3-s delay were used as a quantifiable motor response to a visuospatial cue. The question addressed was whether repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the DLPFC or PPC during the sensory of memory phase affects accuracy of memory-guided saccades. Stimulation over the primary motor cortex served as control. Stimulation over the DLPFC significantly impaired accuracy of memory-guided saccades in amplitude and direction. Stimulation over the PPC impaired accuracy of memory-guided saccades only when applied within the sensory phase (50 ms after cue offset), but not during the memory phase (500 ms after cue offset). These results provide further evidence for a parieto-frontal network controlling performance of visuospatial delayed-response tasks in humans. It can be concluded that within this network the DLPFC is mainly concerned with the mnemonic respresentation and the PPC with the sensory representation of spatially defined perceptual information.

Notes: Abstract Fatal pulmonary fat embolism is a rare complication in elective orthopaedic surgery. It has been described previously as occuring during intramedullary manipulations and in trauma patients. We present the case of a 56-year-old slender housewife with severe radicular complaints because of lumbar spinal stenosis. She underwent a dorsal bilateral decompression of L4/L5 and L5/S1 in combination with an instrumented dorsolateral spinal fusion. Transpedicular fixation of L4/L5/S1 was accomplished by titanium Rodegerdts implants. Both iliac crests were used for harvesting autologous bone grafts. The intra-operative course was uneventful; however, 6 h after surgery, despite resuscitation, she expired. Autopsy revealed macroscopic gross fatty infiltration of lung parenchyma with oedema. We believe there is no relation between this complication and the transpedicular instrumentation. The position of the patient and the extent of the harvesting technique could be critical in preventing this serious complication.

Notes: Summary The nucleotide sequence of the coat protein cistron of an Austrian isolate of grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV-FC) fromVitis vinifera cv. French Colombard was determined. It shows small differences at the RNA level as well as at the protein level compared to the sequences of already published grapevine fanleaf virus strains. The differences may be a result of the natural variation among virus populations or a consequence of selection in a special host plant. As the virus RNA sequence reported here was isolated directly from its natural woody host by an immunocapture-PCR technique, passage of the virus through a herbaceous host could be avoided and a possible bias introduced by a different host environment was excluded. The sequence similarity of known GFLV coat protein cistrons to the sequence described is as high as among the other strains.
