Notes: Quartet excited halogen atoms F*(2p4 3s,4PJ), Cl*(3p4 4s,4PJ), Br*(4p4 5s,4PJ), and I*(5p4 6s,4PJ), where the J's are 5/2, 3/2, and 1/2, were found to be produced in the electron pulse irradiation of Ne or Ar containing one of SF6, CCl4, CClF3, CBrF3, CBr2F2, and CF3I. The population distribution ratios at the stage of production were 1.0(J=5/2):0.41(J=3/2):0.06(J=1/2) for F* in Ne containing SF6, 1.0(J=5/2):0.27(J=3/2):0.14(J=1/2) for Cl* in Ne containing CCl4, 1.0(J=5/2):0.29(J=3/2):0.2–0.3(J=1/2) for Br* in Ne containing CBr2F2, and 1.0(J=5/2):0.13(J=3/2):0.54(J=1/2) for I* in Ar containing CF3I. The observed ratios considerably differ from those calculated from the Boltzmann distribution law. F*(4P5/2), F*(4P3/2), and Cl*(4P5/2) are mainly produced by the reactions of lowest triplet excited diatomic molecules of neon with SF6 and CCl4. Cl*(4P3/2) and Cl*(4P1/2) are produced in a rapid process and deactivated into lower Cl*(4P5/2). Several reaction channels probably contribute to the formation of Br*(4PJ) and I*(4PJ). Rate constants for reactions of triplet excited diatomic molecules of neon or argon with these parent molecules were determined from observed absorption decay curves for Ne2* or Ar2* in the presence of parent molecules. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract We report CW operation of a GaInAsP/InP multiple-reflector microcavity (MRMC) laser operated at fairly low threshold current density. The threshold current density with broad contact (stripe widthW=240 μm, cavity lengthL=60 μm) under pulsed operation was 180 A cm−2 (l th=20 mA), and was 230 A cm−2 under CW operation at room temperature operating at 1.52 μm wavelength.

Notes: Summary We investigated whether lysine transport would be subject to adaptive regulation in Caco-2 human intestinal cells. The activity of Lys transport in Caco-2 cells decreased with increasing incubation time with lOmM Lys. Among the two systems involved in Lys transport, the system b0,+ component was greatly decreased by incubating cells ith lOmM Lys, whereas the system y+ component did not change. These results suggest that system b0,+ mainly contributes to the adaptive regulation of Lys transport in Caco-2 cells.

Notes: 2 . The laser generates an intense infrared macropulse with a duration of 17 μs; the macropulse consists of a train of 380 micropulses, each of which has a duration of a few picoseconds. The fluence of a macropulse was estimated to be about 16 Jcm-2 at a beam waist. Peak wavelengths were set in the range of 9–10 μm. The macropulse induced the IRMPD of 1 and 5 Torr CHBrF2; most of molecules in the focal region seemed to decompose at a wavelength of 9.3 μm. The mechanism is the initial decomposition of CHBrF2 to CF2 and HBr, followed by the dimerization of CF2 to form C2F4. The decomposition was found to be isotopically selective at 9.7 μm; the final product C2F4 had a 13C atomic fraction of 6%. Th e addition of CO2 to CHBrF2 significantly decreased the yield of C2F4. vibrationally excited CHBrF2 molecules produced by laser pulses were efficiently deactivated by CO2 molecules.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we treat the interaction of acidic-glycolipids with proteins. We used monosialoganglioside, disialoganglioside, and ganglioside mixture. The proteins used were albumins whose surfaces are modified differently with mono- and disaccharides. By using X-ray and neutron-scattering techniques we have found that the interactions of mono- and disialogangliosides with albumins having monosaccharides occur less destructively for ganglioside aggregate structures at low protein concentrations and that the interaction of monosialogangliosides with albumins having disaccharides occurs very destructively, suggesting a strong interaction between them compared with other cases.

Notes: Co-rotating twin screw extruders are extensively used in polymer compounding. In co-rotating twin screw extruders, the kneading disk region is the most influential for compounding efficiency. However, only a few studies have so far been made for the flow analysis of the kneading disk region. This may be due to the fact that phenomena relating to kneading are overly complicated. In this study, the flow in the kneading disk region was investigated using a closed-type co-rotating twin screw single-staged mixer. We measured torque, pressure, and resin temperature under various compounding conditions of polypropylene. It was found that the flow characteristics obtained were identical with those measured using a capillary rehometer. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
