    Notes: The existence of plasma-sheath resonances in a capacitively coupled plasma reactor, which contains a fairly low pressure discharge, has been demonstrated. Under this kind of pressure the plasma is approximately collisionless and inhomogeneous. Two different models have been used to resolve the resonances successfully, a uniform and a nonuniform plasma model. It is shown that the uniform plasma model can explain well the experimental observations; the transmission of rf current circulating in the plasma system is maximum at the plasma-sheath resonance at a frequency below the electron plasma frequency. It was found during further analysis using the nonuniform plasma model, with experimental values for the plasma width and sheath thickness, that the plasma-sheath resonance coincides with the local plasma frequency at two planes within the discharge. At these two resonance planes, the plasma impedance function has a pole. The model predicts a resonant energy absorption in this region and, furthermore, the amount of absorbed energy is essentially determined by the steepness of the electron density profile within the resonance plane. This result is in good agreement with Crawford and Harker [J. Plasma Phys. 8, 261 (1972)]. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A plasma-sheath resonance has been observed at low pressures in argon plasmas. This phenomenon was known in a different context, that of the plasma resonance probe, but was hitherto unknown in parallel-plate plasma reactors. Two different models have been used to resolve the plasma-sheath resonances. A simple linear model is used to represent the plasma system as a series circuit of two capacitors (sheaths) and an inductor (plasma region). The plasma-sheath resonance occurs at a frequency where the cold plasma behaves inductively and resonates together with the two sheaths. The second model treats the plasma bulk as a series combination of an infinite number of elementary cells each one constituted by an inductor and a capacitor in parallel. By assuming an electron density profile the total impedance of the plasma can be obtained. Furthermore, the calculations show that the resonant energy is absorbed at an infinitely thin resonance plane. This causes the impedance of the system, filled with a lossless inhomogeneous plasma, to have a real part. This resonance can be used as a diagnostic, to measure the electron density. It could perhaps be exploited as the basis of a new plasma reactor. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Two studies of the relationship between depression and resting frontal electroencephalographic (EEG) activity are reported. Although considerable research supports the theory of left and right hemispheric specialization for approach and withdrawal behaviors, only four studies involving clinically depressed individuals have been published to date. Despite methodological similarities with published research, no significant differences in frontal activation emerged between depressed and nondepressed participants with either college students having high Beck Depression Inventory scores (Study 1) or with individuals diagnosed with DSM-III-R depression (Study 2). Post hoc analyses in Study 2 revealed one effect confined to lateral frontal leads during the first 2 min of EEG data; this finding was significant in only one of three reference montages. Results are discussed in light of methodological considerations and mediating variables such as temperament and coping styles.

    Notes: We previously reported that a Bayesian-based event-related potential memory assessment procedure (Allen, lacono, & Danielson. 1992, Psychophysiology. 29, 504-522) was highly accurate at identifying previously learned material, regardless of an individual's motivational incentive to conceal information. When a bootstrapping procedure (Harwell & Donchin, 1991. Psychophysiology, 2ft, 531-547) is applied to these same data, greater motivational incentives appear to increase the accuracy of the procedure. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to examine these two procedures and a new procedure. ROC curves indicated that all three methods produce extremely high rates of classification accuracy and that the sensitivity of the bootstrapping procedure to motivational incentive is due to the particular cut points selected. One or the other method may be preferred depending upon incentive to deceive, the cost of incorrect decisions, and the availability of extra psychophysiological data.

    Notes: The Relapse Replication and Extension Project (RREP) was a multisite study to replicate and extend Marlatt's taxonomy of relapse precipitants. In addition to replicating Marlatt's original taxonomic system, three independent research teams utilized prospective designs to identify additional predictors of relapse and developed and evaluated two alternative systems for assessing high risk relapse situations. This overview describes the replication methodology, summarizes seven RREP studies completed by the three research groups, and discusses five cross-cutting conclusions emerging from the studies. These conclusions are: (1) reliability of Marlatt's taxonomic system was variable both within and across the three research sites; (2) Marlatt's taxonomic system showed little predictive validity in analyses that used pretreatment relapse data to predict post-treatment relapse, but there are important unresolved issues; (3) an alternative taxonomy provided little more predictive validity than the original taxonomy even though it measured more dimensions of relapse

    Notes: A synthetic peptide analogue of the phosphorylation site of LHC II, when phosphorylated by thylakoid membranes, served as a substrate for the thylakoid phosphoprotein phosphatase. The phosphopeptide became dephosphorylated at a low rate, comparable to that of the 9 kDa phosphoprotein. Phospho-LHC II itself became dephosphorylated much more rapidly, at a rate unaffected by endogenous phosphorylation of the peptide. Endogenous phosphorylation of the peptide was also without effect on other thylakoid protein phosphorylation and dephosphorylation reactions. In contrast, dephosphorylation of many thylakoid phosphoproteins was inhibited by addition of a pure, chemically-synthesised phosphopeptide analogue of phospho-LHC II. This result suggests that at least one thylakoid phosphoprotein phosphatase exhibits a broad substrate specificity. The results indicate that any one of a number of amino acid sequences can give a phosphoprotein configuration that is recognised by a single phosphatase.
