Notes: Laboratory experiments were conducted to measure the extent to which trace concentrations of radioactive materials would sorb on well construction materials and to assess the rapidity with which sorption would occur. The radionuclides employed in these studies were tritium, Cs-137, and Co-57, Solutions with trace concentrations of these radionuclides were contracted with casings of PVC, fiberglass-epoxy, stainless steel, carbon steel, and steel rods coated wtih expoy. The PVC showed no interaction with the tritium or Cs-137 during contact times of two hours to these weeks; however, it did sorb Co-57. The fiberglass-epoxy also interacted only with the cobalt. The stainless steel sorbed cesium and cobalt. The carbon steel (or the ferric hydroxide forming on its surface) also sorbed both cesium and cobalt. The epoxy-coated steel rods did not interact measurably with day of the radio-nuclides so long as the coating was intact. The sorption reactions generally were apparent after a few days of contact: in the case of carbon steel, they were detectable in a few hours.

Notes: The results of the first international proficiency test (GeoPT1) of geochemical laboratories are presented. A total of 49 laboratories contributed analytical data on G94, a sample of Threlkeld microgranite which had been collected at the International Conference, Geoanalysis 94. Assigned values were derived by robust statistical analysis of contributed data for 12 major elements and 39 trace elements, of which 3 (As, Pb and The) were provisional values. Z-scores were calculated, as required by the protocol using either ‘pure geochemistry’or ‘applied geochemistry’fitness for purpose criteria selected by contributing laboratories. An overview of the z-score results indicates that 28.7% of contributed data fell outside the -2〈z〈2 range indicating that unsuspected analytical discrepancies may be affecting the corresponding results.

Notes: The distribution of barium and other elements related to biological productivity has been studied in two Palaeocene sections from the Middle East. In the bathyal Ben Gurion section, Israel, Ba* (= Ba/Al2O3× 15%) concentrations are low, in the range 0.04% to 0.3% in the lower Palaeocene, and very high, 1% to 2%, throughout most of the upper Palaeocene. In the neritic Gebel Aweina section in Egypt Ba* values are low, 〈 0.1%, throughout the entire Palaeocene. The Ba* enrichments at Ben Gurion and their correlations with increases in P2O5 and opaline silica, and local and global δ13C maxima, indicate that upwelling and high productivity were important in this region during the late Palaeocene. The absence of Ba* enrichments in the shallower Gebel Aweina section probably reflects the strong depth dependence of biobarium deposition. In the uppermost Palaeocene, at the level where the global benthic extinction event is registered, Ba* concentrations in the Ben Gurion section increase to anomalous 6%. which suggests that upwelling and possibly wind strengths intensified during this event. The results speak against deep-water formation in this region since downwelling and not upwelling is required.

Notes: The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the significantly increased resolution of determining macropore recharge by combining physical, chemical, and isotopic methods of analysis. Techniques for quantifying macropore recharge were developed for both small-scale (1 to 10 km2) and regional-scale areas in arid and semi-arid areas. The Southern High Plains region of Texas and New Mexico was used as a representative field site to test these methods. Macropore recharge in small-scale areas is considered to be the difference between total recharge through floors of topographically closed basins and interstitial recharge through the same area. On the regional scale, macropore recharge was considered to be the difference between regional average annual recharge and interstitial recharge measured in the unsaturated zone. Stable isotopic composition of ground water and precipitation was used as an independent estimate of macropore recharge on the regional scale. Results of this analysis suggest that in the Southern High Plains recharge flux through macro pores is between 60 and 80 percent of the total 11 mm/y. Between 15 and 35 percent of the recharge occurs by interstitial recharge through the basin floors. Approximately 5 percent of the total recharge occurs as either interstitial or matrix recharge between the basin floors, representing approximately 95 percent of the area. The approach is applicable to other arid and semi-arid areas that focus rainfall into depressions or valleys.

Notes: Palaeomagnetic studies of the Chinese loess provided the first firm chronology for these sediments and revealed that their depositional history reaches back over 2.5 Ma. Magnetic susceptibility records can provide an even more detailed chronology through correlation with the δ18 O deep-sea stratigraphy. The susceptibility fluctuations have been used also, either alone or in combination with 10Be measurements, to reconstruct palaeoclimate. However, there is still debate as to the origin of the 10Be and magnetic minerals in the Chinese loess and hence their palaeoclimatic significance. Here we analyse magnetic data from six sites across the Loess Plateau, and reinterpret the 10Be data from Luochuan as largely reflecting primary 10Be dust loading rather than as a palaeorainfall indicator. We discount previous ideas of both constancy of the flux of magnetically susceptible minerals (i.e. susceptibility flux) or constancy of the ratio of the flux of 10Be and susceptibility. We explain the susceptibility of Chinese loess in terms of in situ pedogenic ferrimagnetic enhancement. The competing effects of reduction and oxidation are taken to control the degree of magnetic enhancement, such that magnetic susceptibility is a direct indicator of palaeorainfall. Our reconstructions yield variations in palaeorainfall of between +28 per cent and — 12 per cent in the central Loess Plateau rather than +100 per cent to — 50 per cent as suggested from previous 10Be and magnetic susceptibility studies.
