Notes: To estimate the risk and evaluate the long-term outcome of knee and ankle injuries in former national team elite football, 69 players were randomly selected, followed by clinical and stress radiographic examinations. Thirthy-nine players (49 knees) had had knee injuries and 29 ankle injuries (35 ankles). The median time from injury until study examination was 25 years. The knee injuries were tears of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in 24 cases combined with rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus lesions in three. Meniscus lesions had occurred in 17 cases including three combined with ACL and MCL and another two with ACL ruptures. Isolated rupture of the ACL had occurred in four cases. The ankle lesions were in 26 of 35 cases ruptures of the lateral ligaments. In all, 12 players had completely stopped football and three had changed occupation. Signs of arthritis were present in 63% of the injured knees and in 33% of the injured ankles. The incidence of arthritis in the group of 17 uninjured players was 26% in the knee and 18% the ankle. In elite football players knee and ankle injuries seem to have a serious long-term outcome, but also uninjured players have a higher risk of developing arthritis than the normal population.

Notes: The low temperature magnetic properties of the Li2CuO2 compound have been investigated by means of superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. We find in addition to an antiferromagnetic phase below 9.5 K a ferromagnetic-like steep rise of the magnetization around 2.8 K. The observed low temperature behavior is discussed by considering second and fourth order magnetocrystalline effective anisotropy coefficients, in addition to the exchange couplings reported in the literature. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract We report a search for γ rays emanating from Coulomb excitation of fast (30–46 MeV/u) radioactive projectiles8He,11,12,14Be interacting with a lead target. These are clearly identified by their Doppler shift. The 320 keV 1/2− → 1/2+ γ transition from11Be was observed with a cross-section of 191±26 mb which is noticeably less than expected from the known lifetime and in the perturbation limit of pure Coulomb excitation. In the other nuclei rather stringent upper limits of 0.01 to 0.2 Weisskopf units, are placed on the hypothetical transition to 1− states.

Notes: Abstract The aim of the present study was to evaluate the value of local anaesthesia versus the commonly used intravenous pethidine/diazepam in the reduction of acute secondary shoulder dislocations. Patients with a traumatic secondary dislocation of the shoulder were randomized to either locally injected lidocaine or intravenously injected pethidine/diazepam. The local method was performed with 20 ml of 1 % lidocaine. The patients were observed for any complication during and after the procedure, and the methods used were evaluated with a visual analogue scale (VAS). From November 1991 to September 1993, 62 patients were admitted to our departments of whom 52 were included in the study. Average age was 47 years (range 18–89 years) with 24 men and 28 women. Twenty-six patients were randomized to pethidine/diazepam; 22 had a successful reduction, and 4 were failures. Twenty-six patients received lidocaine, of whom 18 were successful and 8 not. Three patients treated with the intravenous method suffered respiratory depression, and one required an antidote. No systemic or local side-effects, no neurovascular damage and no early or late superficial or deep infection were recorded in the lidocaine group. There was no statistical difference between the average VAS value in the two groups. Lidocaine used to reduce acute secondary dislocations of the shoulder is a simple and safe method. It is as effective as the standard intravenous method and is well accepted by patients.

Notes: Summary Tamm-Horsfall glycoprotein, present only in the kidney thick ascending limb of Henle's loop, was studied here in streptozotocin diabetic rats. Tamm-Horsfall glycoprotein mRNA in situ hybridization was performed on snap-frozen left kidneys; the right kidneys were perfusion-fixed with 4% paraformaldehyde and embedded either in paraffin, for Tamm-Horsfall glycoprotein immunohistochemistry, or in Epon for stereologic measurements. The length of the thick ascending limb of Henle's loop and the amount of glycogen were measured and the ultrastructure of the cells was evaluated. Urinary excretion of Tamm-Horsfall glycoprotein, calcium, magnesium and albumin was measured. After 10 and 50 days' duration of diabetes, kidney weight increased 20 and 41%, respectively and the length of the thick ascending limb of Henle's loop increased 28 and 56%, respectively, compared with controls. Substantial glycogen accumulations were present in the thick ascending limb of Henle's loop, and electron microscopy revealed a significant decrease in organelles and basolateral membranes. After 10 and 50 days' duration of diabetes, in situ hybridization of Tamm-Horsfall glycoprotein mRNA revealed a fourfold decrease, and the immunostaining for Tamm-Horsfall glycoprotein showed a threefold decrease as measured by densitometry. However, urinary Tamm-Horsfall glycoprotein excretion rate was increased fivefold and urinary concentration about twofold. Urinary calcium excretion increased threefold and magnesium twofold, but urinary albumin excretion was not significantly increased. The increased amount of Tamm-Horsfall glycoprotein, calcium and magnesium in the urine in diabetes occurs here concomitant with severe cellular damage in the thick ascending limb of Henle's loop.

Notes: Summary Social regulation of egg production and weight in queens was studied in relation to presence and absence of larvae and workers in the pharaoh's ant,Monomorium pharaonis (L.). Results were obtained by counting eggs and weighing queens under various conditions. The results confirm the existence of a positive feed-back loop between mated queens and their larvae as evident from a correlation (Y = 4.575 * X + 6.452) between the number of large worker larvae (X) and the egg yield (Y). This correlation seems to relate to the queens preferential feeding on larval secretions. Queens without larvae maintained a low level of egg production of about 6 eggs/day. Queens deprived of larvae as well as workers stopped producing eggs within 24 hours. Repletes, special workers, with greatly distended gasters functioned as a buffer retarding decline of egg production by feeding the queens during short periods without larvae.

Notes: Summary Vitellin from the pharaoh's ant,Monomorium pharaonis (L.), was found to contain a single apoprotein with aM r of 198.3 kDa. The protein is a glycoprotein exposing mannose containing carbohydrate groups. Antibodies to pharaoh's ant vitellin (v t), raised in rabbits, were used to determine the head-, thorax-, and abdominal contents of vitellogenin and vitellin (v g+vt) in queens in relation to the presence or absence of larvae and workers using an ELISA test. Thev g+vt contents were also compared to the egg-laying rate and the weight of the queens. The results confirm the existence of a positive correlation betweenv g+vt contents in the queens and their access to larvae, probably related to the queens' preferential feeding on larval secretions. In queens without larvae the abdominalv g+vt contents declined in concordance with a low oviposition rate of 6–8 eggs/day. In spite of cessation of egg-laying within 24 hours after removal of both larvae and workers, the queens maintained basal contents ofv g+vt. This may indicate that the presence of larvae is not only essential for the nutrition of the queens, but also for the uptake of vitellogenin in the growing oocytes. This additional stimultive factor may be based on the queens' response to primer pheromones liberated by the larvae. v g+vt could not be demonstrated in workers or larvae with the ELISA test. If anyv g+vt is present in larvae and workers the amount is lower than the detection limit (1–2 ng/individual). This seems to rule out the possibility of transfer of proteins of this kind to the queens.
