Notes: Introduction: A great number of cosmetically disturbing, cutaneous lesions are localized in the periocular region. While various approaches for treatment such as excision, electrocauterization or cryosurgery often show unsatisfactory results, the use of laser technology is of increasing interest. Material and methods: A total of 104 patients with different cutaneous periorbital lesions (wrinkles, xanthelasma, syringoma) were treated with a new erbium:YAG laser system (wavelength 2940 nm, pulse duration 0,350 ms and pulse energy 0,1–1,7 Joules), which works on the principle of vaporization. Results: The erbium:YAG laser allows athermic ablation of very thin skin layers without scarring and with minimal lateral thermal injury due an extremely short pulse duration. Periorbital lesions can be treated effectively by erbium:YAG laser, and good to excellent cosmetic results can be obtained. Conclusions: The use of pulsed erbium: YAG laser is an effective and promising new method for treatment of different superficial periorbital cutaneous lesions.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The erbium:YAG laser (wavelength 2940 nm; pulse duration 0.350 ms; pulse energy 0.1–1.7 J) allows vaporization of very thin skin layers without scarring and minimal lateral thermal injury due to an extremely short pulse duration. It permits exact ablation of relatively large areas of facial skin. We report our results with 216 patients following treatment for different facial lesions (facial wrinkles, acne scars, syringomas, and circumscribed sebaceous gland hyperplasia) using a new erbium:YAG laser system. Good-to-excellent cosmetic results were obtained in these patients. Our findings show that the erbium:YAG laser is an elegant and promising new method for the treatment of facial lesions.

Notes: Summary A quadrilateral continuum-basedC 0 shell element is presented, which relies on extensible director kinematics and incorporates unmodified three-dimensional constitutive models. The shell element is developed from the nonlinear enhanced assumed strain (EAS) method advocated by Sino & Armero [1] and formulated in curvilinear coordinates. Here, the EAS-expansion of the material displacement gradient leads to the local interpretation of enhanced covariant base vectors that are superposed on the compatible covariant base vectors. Two expansions of the enhanced covariant base vectors are given: first an extension of the underlying single extensible shell kinematic and second an improvement of the membrane part of the bilinear element. Furthermore, two assumed strain modifications of the compatible covariant strains are introduced such that the element performs well even in the case of very thin shells.

Notes: Summary The objective of this work is to elaborate upon the variational setting for micropolar continua withconstrained andunconstrained rotations. To this end, several mixed variational principles and their regularizations are considered for both the geometrically linear and nonlinear case. The interrelation between the different formulations are highlighted. The most advantageous result is obtained by translating the insight gained for the geometrically linear case to the geometrically nonlinear case involving large strains and large rotations. It turns out that a particular micropolar description involves standard constitutive models for the symmetric stress part together with a nonsymmetric penalty stress thus circumventing to describe the constitutive law in terms of a nonsymmetric strain measure.

Notes: Abstract Modeling of elastic thin-walled beams, plates and shells as 1D- and 2D-boundary value problems due to kinematical hypotheses, for example, the normal hypothesis, is valid in undisturbed subdomains. Disturbances near supports and free edges, in the vicinity of concentrated loads and at thickness jumps cannot be described by 1D- and 2D-BVPs. In these disturbed subdomains dimensional adaptivity has to be verformed with respect to the 3D-theory. Dimensional adaptivity (d-adaptivity) coupled with a mixed h- or p-adaptivity becomes necessary in order to guarantee a reliable overall solution. The error analysis for a mixed h-(mesh refinement), p-(polynomial expansion) and d-(dimensional expansion) adaptive process is treated in detail. Errorestimators including the discretization and dimensional errors and additionally the model error are derived. A main emphasis is the description of the additional hierarchical test-spaces (h- and p-test-space) for effective and robust overall convergence. By these new combinations of error-estimation a quality jump of FEM is intended.
