    Notes: Abstract A program has been developed at the INEL to produce new enhanced editions of the original Gamma-ray Spectrum Catalogues for presentation in electronic format. This program has produced the first version of the Catalogues in CD-ROM format and will offer them on the Internet through the Gamma-ray Spectrometry Center Web Site at INEEL. The original content of the Catalogues has been expanded to include integrated decay scheme drawings, tables of related decay data, and updated material on the techniques of gamma-ray spectrometry. All of the original spectral plots, gamma-ray energy and intensity data, and text were converted to digital format, related decay data from the Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF) and decay scheme graphics were then added, and all data converted to the Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format. Follow-on versions of the catalogues are being expanded to include prompt neutron capture and n-n' spectra and spectra representing the response of large-volume Ge detectors. Large-volume Ge detector spectra will be calculated, using Monte Carlo and parametric fitting techniques presently under development. Examples of content and details of the advanced technology applied to produce these new volumes will be presented. Services and content of the Gamma-ray Spectrometry Center Web Site will also be described.

    Notes: Abstract Combinations of the previously developed attractants CEHO from host fruit aroma and AMPu from volatile metabolites of amino acids were evaluated for attractiveness to gamma-irradiated Mexican fruit flies, Anastrepha ludens, in a citrus orchard. In one experiment, McPhail traps with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) lures loaded with CEHO (10:1:1:50 mixture of 1,8-cineole, ethyl hexanoate, hexanol, and ethyl octanoate) were more attractive than blank traps. McPhail traps with AMPu (10:10:1 mixture of ammonium bicarbonate, methylamine HCl, and putrescine) were more attractive than blank and CEHO traps. Traps containing both AMPu and CEHO lures were less attractive than traps containing AMPu alone. In another experiment, sticky yellow panels and spheres were used to compare attractiveness of the same two attractants in different formulations. Sticky traps baited with membrane formulations of CEHO (10:1:1:10 mixture of the chemicals listed above) were not significantly attractive. Sticky traps with polypropylene tubes containing an agar formulation of AMPu (6:10:1 mixture of ammonium carbonate, methylamine HCl, and putrescine) were more attractive than blank and CEHO baited traps. As in the first experiment, traps with both AMPu and CEHO lures were less attractive than traps with AMPu alone. Results indicate that attractive host-odor volatiles and attractive amino-acid metabolites interact negatively with regard to attractiveness to the Mexican fruit fly.

    Notes: Abstract Extracts of sex pheromone glands obtained from females ofPloida interpunctella contained detectable amounts of (Z,E,)-9,12-tetradecadien-1-ol acetate (Z9,E12–14:Ac) and (Z,E.)-9,12-tetradecadien-1-ol (Z9,E12–14:OH) 4 hr prior to the first scotophase after adult emergence. The amount of pheromone increased during the first 4 hr of the scotophase and then declined to low levels during the subsequent photophase. Decapitation of females immediately after emergence, prior to expansion of the wings, inhibited production of pheromone during the subsequent 48 hr. Injection of extracts of the heads of 1-day-old females ofP. interpunctella of partially purified extracts of the cephalic ganglia of females of the corn earworm moth into decapitated females stimulated production of bothZ9,E12–14:Ac andZ9,E12–14:OH as well as production of (Z,E)-9,12-tetradecadienal (Z9,E12–14:Al). This aldehyde was subsequently identified from extracts of pheromone glands obtained from naturally calling females as well as from volatiles emitted by calling females. Studies on the terminal steps in biosynthesis of the pheromone showed thatZ9,E12–14:OH was produced from the corresponding acetate and thatZ9,E12–14:Al was produced from the alcohol via the action of an oxidase(s).

    Notes: Summary 1. Sera from children were examined for antibodies against parainfluenza viruses, types 1, 2 and 3 and against mumps virus. The findings suggest that these are common infecting agents of British children. 2. The proportion of children possessing antibodies increased with age and antibodies against the individual viruses were acquired at different ages. After the initial development of antibody the mean level did not rise further during childhood. 3. At an age when most children had acquired antibody against more than one of these viruses a correlation between the levels of antibody was usually demonstrated. The significance of these findings in relation to the epidemiology and antigenic behaviour of the parainfluenza viruses is discussed.
