    Notes: Abstract: Voltammetric microelectrodes and microdialysis probes were used simultaneously to monitor extracellular dopamine in rat striatum during electrical stimulation of the medial forebrain bundle. Microelectrodes were placed far away (1 mm) from, immediately adjacent to, and at the outlet of microdialysis probes. In drug-naive rats, electrical stimulation (45 Hz, 25 s) evoked a robust response at microelectrodes far away from the probes, but there was no response at microelectrodes adjacent to and at the outlet of the probes. After nomifensine administration (20 mg/kg i.p.), stimulation evoked robust responses at all three microelectrode placements. These results demonstrate first that evoked release in tissue adjacent to microdialysis probes is suppressed in comparison with evoked release in tissue far away from the probes and second that equilibration of the dopamine concentration in the extracellular fluid adjacent to and far away from the probes is prevented by the high-affinity dopamine transporter. Hence, models of microdialysis, which assume the properties of tissue to be spatially uniform, require modification to account for the distance that separates viable sites of evoked dopamine release from the probe. We introduce new mass transfer resistance parameters that qualitatively explain the observed effects of uptake inhibition on stimulation responses recorded with microdialysis and voltammetry.

    Notes: Abstract: Numerical modeling was used as a means to examine the relationship between the outcome of in vivo voltammetry and microdialysis experiments and dopamine concentrations in the extracellular fluid of rat striatum. In the case of microdialysis, quantitative interpretation of results demands knowledge of the in vivo values for the extraction and recovery ratios of the probes toward dopamine. Equality of the extraction and recovery ratios is a necessary condition for the direct application of the no-net-flux method as a quantitative technique. Recent results have suggested that the extraction and recovery ratios are not equal, and this interpretation is now supported by theory. A new relationship between extraction and recovery is proposed.

    Notes: Abstract: Carbon fiber microelectrodes either were implanted directly into striatal tissue or were mounted into the outlet of microdialysis probes that were implanted into striatal tissue. This allowed voltammetry and microdialysis to be used under identical in vivo experimental conditions to monitor extracellular dopamine levels during electrical stimulation of the medial forebrain bundle both before and after uptake inhibition with nomifensine. The marked differences between the results obtained with each technique cannot be explained on the basis of their inherent analytical attributes (sensitivity, temporal response, etc.). The results demonstrate that the microdialysis recovery factor for endogenous dopamine increases after uptake inhibition, an observation that stands in contradiction to the existing theory and practice of the microdialysis technique. The observations led to the development of a numerical model that rationalizes the observations reported herein and that allows in vivo voltammetry and in vivo microdialysis results to be interpreted within a single theoretical framework.

    Notes: The applications of magnetic direct generation, a noncontact technique for generating acoustic waves, are limited by poor transduction efficiency. This letter describes an approach for substantially improving the transduction efficiency by application of a transduction format, enhanced direct magnetic generation, that utilizes continuous wave resonances and thin film generation. Glass plates coated with thin films of aluminium have been used as free-standing acoustic cavities to generate resonances with high transduction efficiencies and Q factors. These acoustic resonances have been excited without mechanical contact and their origin and characteristics are discussed with respect to resonances in 530 μm thick aluminized silica plates. The consequences of magnetic direct generation applied to thin metal films, as opposed to bulk metal, are also discussed, particularly with respect to high operating frequencies and acoustic Q factors. It is possible that novel sensors and time standards may be constructed by exploiting this approach. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

The object here was to review the extent to which the Raman spectroscopic technique has been applied to skin research, considering the implications of different instrumentation, comparing animal and human skin, healthy and diseased skin and in vivo and in vitro sampling.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions: Raman spectroscopy is a versatile and non-destructive technique for the study of skin.

    Notes: We examined the stomachs of 25 false killer whales collected from a mass stranding of 181 animals along both coasts of the Strait of Magellan, Chile, in March 1989. The 21 stomachs (nine males and 12 females), with food remains contained 11 prey species (nine cephalopods and two fishes) with a total of 442 individuals. Except for one case, food remains were meager, indicating that the animals had not eaten for some time or through stress had vomited on the beach. Eleven of the 21 animals had mud (often with squid beaks) in the esophagus and first stomach. The prey were identified employing squid beaks, fish otoliths and bones, and their wet weights were estimated using regressions between hard parts and known weights of species. The most important prey were the oceanic and neritic-oceanic squids, Martialia byadesi and Illex argentinus, followed by the neritic fish, Macruronus magellanicus. Of less importance were the oceanic squid, Todaroes fillipovae, the oceanic and epipelagic octopus, Ocytboe sp., and the oceanic squid, Moroteuthis ingens. The rest of the prey were poorly represented and included four oceanic squids and one neritic fish. The prey species of these animals were subantarctic, with two antarctic species, abundant over the Patagonian shelf and adjacent oceanic waters around Tierra del Fuego.

    Notes: Transient myocardial ischemia and associated changes in the autonomic nervous system may influence heart rate and ventricular repolarization to variable degrees. This study evaluated the effect of dipyridamole (DIP) induced ischemia on the autonomic balance by spectral analysis of RR and QT intervals variability. Patients with coronary artery disease undergoing DIP stress echocardiography were studied. From high resolution ECG recordings, RR and QT interval measurements were performed by a dynamic template-matching algorithm. A time-variant analysis was used to estimate power in the LF (0.05–0,15 Hz) and in the HF (0.15–0.4 Hz) band of RR and QT interval spectra. Patients were grouped in ischemic and nonischemic subgroups based on the echocardiographic detection of wall-motion abnormalities. In patients without ischemia (n = 28), DIP caused a decrease in LF power and an increase in HF power of the RR and QT interval variability, indicating concordant changes of both intervals. In contrast, patients with inducible ischemia (n = 11) showed a decrease in HF power of the RR interval spectra and an increase of HF power of QT interval spectra. Furthermore, LF power was increased for RR but decreased for QT interval spectra. Our study suggests that DIP induced ischemia causes a loss of autonomic coupling between heart rate and ventricular repolarization for sympathetic and parasympathetic activities. This lability in ventricular repolarization may constitute an arrhythmogenic substrate during acute ischemia in patients with coronary artery disease.
