Notes: Summary When measuringQ −1 and the flexural resonance frequency of bars clamped at one end, constituted by a viscoelastic polymeric material glued to a rigid support of modulusE 1, it is possible to calculate the componentsE 2 ′ andE 2 ″ of the complex elastic modulus of the polymeric material examined. In this work the minimum (critical) value of the ratioa′=E 2 ′/E 1=a c ′ and the values of the ratioQ 2 −1/Q −1=F 1 are evaluated beyond which no exact calculation ofE 2 ′ and ofQ 2 −1 is possible. Within the confidence limits of the linear viscoelasticity theory, these values depend on the accuracy of measurement of both frequency and resonance curve, as well as on the instrument employed, on the operating temperature and on the ratio between the thicknesses of the two coupled materials. In order to keep outside the critical conditions, the most convenient method involves the use of measurements of coupled test-pieces having different ratiosz between their thicknesses and of supports having different modulusE 1, depending on the field of temperature of the analysis ofE 2 ′ and tg γ2 concerning and E.P.R. elastomer and a vulcanized cis-1,4 polyisoprene in very wide ranges of temperature comprising the glass transition. Moreover, it is demonstrated by analysis the shift on the temperature axis of the tg γ maximum of the composite test-piece with respect to the position of the tg γ maximum of the polymeric material alone.

Notes: Summary Homopolymer-free grafted polymers consisting of chains of polyacrylic acid, polyacrylonitrile and polyacrylamide chemically bound to isotactic polypropylene have been prepared by fractionation of raw materials obtained by radical polymerization. The real and the imaginary parts of the elastic modulus both of grafted polymers and of homopolymers have been measured vs. temperature. The grafted polymers show theß transition of polypropylene; instead, the polypropyleneα transition is superposed on the relaxationsß of the grafted chains. Results are in agreement with the existence of a biphasic structure, as confirmed by the analysis by electron microscope.

Notes: The viscoelasticity and volume expansion of the raw polymerizate of ethylene-propylene copolymer with vinyl chloride grafts, and of the individual components has been studied. The raw polymerizate (composite) and the pure ethylene-propylene-vinyl chloride graft copolymer were found to consist of two phases. The pure graft copolymer has an ethylene-propylene matrix containing some fraction of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) grafts and a microphase with the remainder of the PVC grafts. The raw polymerizate consists of a PVC matrix plasticized with ethylene-propylene chains and a microphase of the ethylene-propylene copolymer. An attempt has been made to calculate the participation of components in microphases and the minimum dimension of the PVC microphase aggregates.

Notes: PTMSP membranes were prepared and characterized. The mean molecular weight of the polymer was found to be 450,000 Da. Time dependence of the density, mechanical properties, IR spectra, DSC, PAL, and permeability data of the polymer and membranes are presented. A detailed analysis of PAL results for PTMSP samples under vacuum, in air, oxygen, and nitrogen atmosphere is presented with the aim to investigate the influence of the external atmosphere on the experimental PAL measurements and to determine correctly the size and the number of the free volume holes. From all the experimental data a model of a channel network is proposed for PTMSP with large holes (mean radium r = 0.75 nm) connected by channel-like holes (mean radium 0.45 nm). The number of large holes decreases by ageing, but not their size, whereas the number of small holes does not change but their size decreases. According to our model the decrease in the permeability of PTMSP with time could be caused by the decrease of the size of the channel-like holes. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The results of crosslinking of polyvinylchloride by copper complex of (-) ephedrine in the presence and/or absence of various polyfunctional monomers, e.g. o-diallylphthalate, triallylcyanurate, divinylbenzene and of their mixtures, are reported. It was found that crosslinking of polyvinylchloride is favored in the presence of monomers that are unable to cyclopolymerize, e.g. divinylbenzene. On the other hand, the monomers that cyclopolymerize easily, e.g. o-diallylphthalate, suppress gel formation. A value of 0.10 was estimated for the ratio of degradation to crosslinking p0/q0: this points to a small tendency of macroradicals to undergo scission reactions. It has been further confirmed that by proper choise of polyfunctional monomers and of reaction conditions, it is possible to influence markedly the glass transition temperature Tg of polyvinylchloride. In this way the values of Tg between 35 and 95°C were obtained.
