    Notes: Abstract SW UMa is an unusual dwarf nova in several respects. Recent observations by Robinsonet al. (1986) have established that SW UMa is an SU UMa system, while Shafter, Szkody, and Thorstensen (1986) have presented evidence suggesting that SW UMa may be a DQ Her system as well. If the DQ Her classification is confirmed then SW UMa will be the only system to have this dual classification. Finally, time resolved spectroscopy of SW UMa has revealed the presence of an S-wave component in the Hα emission which has an unexpected phasing relative to the line wings.

    Notes: Summary Etretinate (Tigason; Roche), which is effective in the treatment of psoriatic arthritis has immunomodulating activity in vivo. We have therefore assessed this drug in an open clinical and biochemical assessment of 24 weeks duration in rheumatoid arthritis. The treatment dose was 1.0 mg/kg/day for the first 4 weeks reducing to 0.5 mg/kg/day thereafter. There was a modest clinical improvement though this only reached statistical significance for joint circumference at 12 and 16 weeks (P〈0.05). Biochemical improvement only reached levels of statistical significance for IgM at week 16 (P〈0.01). Eight out of 15 patients had discontinued the drug because of side-effects by week 12 and only three out of 15 patients showed individual improvement by week 24. Some biochemical parameters (ESR) worsened. These results suggest only modest clinical efficacy and use of the drug in rheumatoid arthritis is likely to be curtailed by unacceptable side-effects. The improvement in biochemical variables that occurs when the drug is used in psoriatic arthritis does not occur in rheumatoid arthritis.

    Notes: Abstract Fine grained gabbroic chilled margins and crosscutting dikes are associated in space and time with three ca. 1400 Ma anorthositic plutons in the Flowers River area, southeastern Nain igneous complex. Both the anorthositic and gabbroic rocks have distinctive compositions compared to rocks of similar age and lithology elsewhere in northcentral Labrador. The anorthositic rocks contain olivine and augite rather than orthopyroxene, and Fe-Ti oxides, apatite and orthoclase are unusually abundant. Cumulus plagioclase is abnormally enriched in incompatible elements. Most of the gabbroic rocks are uniform in composition, although the effects of contamination and fractionation are evident in some places. They define a transitional to alkalic ferrogabbro magma that is strongly enriched in K, P and incompatible trace elements. The chemical characteristics of the ferrogabbro magma imply derivation from enriched mantle or involvement of a significant crustal component. A parent-daughter relationship between the ferrogabbro magma and anorthositic rocks is suggested by their compositional similarities and the fact that the gabbroic chilled margins and plagioclase-rich pluton interiors appear to be completely gradational in composition and texture.

    Follow-up after colorectal cancer — current practice in Wales and South West England (1987)

    Notes: Abstract The necessity for follow-up after curative resection of colorectal cancer remains controversial. Many studies have failed to demonstrate the increase in survival which might be anticipated when detailed follow-up methods are used. In the United Kingdom no single policy has evolved. This study has examined, therefore, the current follow-up practice of a large group of British surgeons. Six per cent carried out no routine postoperative follow-up and there was great variation in the methods used and the regularity of visits. There is a need for a rational policy based on controlled studies to determine whether follow-up is of benefit to the patient and to identify the most effective methods.

    Notes: Abstract We present autocorrelation measurements showing the high-speed sampling and switching capabilities of SOS photoconducting elements which have been ion implanted with 60 and 160 keV Si28 ions. An analysis of the circuit shows the intrinsic photoconductive decay to be very fast (∼3.5 ps) and that the measured response is primarily limited by the gap capacitance and the associated R-C time.

    Notes: Abstract Interaction studies in the rat and healthy human volunteers have shown that protein binding of diclofenac is reduced by the addition of salicylic acid causing an increased free drug level of diclofenac. The diclofenac area under curve (AUC) is also reduced by approximately one-third in the presence of salicylate. We have performed a crossover comparison of soluble aspirin, diclofenac and the two drugs in combination in patients with rheumatoid arthritis to determine whether this had clinical relevance. 36 patients entered the study. There was a high dropout rate on aspirin alone but analysis of completors (22 patients) showed diclofenac either alone or in combination to be superior to aspirin alone on two of the five clinical parameters measured. There was no significant difference between disclofenac and aspirin+diclofenac. We thus found no clinical manifestations of the pharmacokinetic interaction.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Das klassische Problem der Bestimmung der variablen Grenze beim Gefrieren eines halbunendlich gesättigten Fluids mit Newton-Kühlung an der Wand besitzt bekanntlich keine geschlossene Lösung. Näherungslösungen sind nur für große Stefan-Zahlen bekannt. Bei Newton Kühlung erfordern die gängigen numerischen Methoden eine Schrittweite, die so klein ist, daß genaue Resultate große Rechenzeiten erfordern. Hier werden zwei Näherungslösungen konstruiert, die eine für kleine und die andere für große Zeiten. Im Fall einer großen Stefan-Zahlα erhalten wir mit beiden Lösungen einen pseudostationären Zustand mit Korrekturen erster Ordnung. Der Grenzfall der verschwindenden Newton-Kühlung ergibt genau die bekannte Stefan-oder Neumann-Lösung. Im allgemeinen Fall wird die Gültigkeit der Näherung durch Vergleich mit Resultaten früherer Arbeiten sowie mit bekannten oberen und unteren Schranken verifiziert.
    Notes: Summary The classical moving boundary problem for the planar freezing of a semi-infinite saturated liquid with Newton cooling at the wall is well known not to admit an exact solution. Existing perturbation solutions are valid only when the Stefan number is large. Further, since the implementation of the Newton cooling condition involves the step size, numerical solutions are only accurate if extremely small sizes are taken which involves large computing times. Here two new approximate analytic solutions are obtained, the first is an initial or starting solution while the second is valid for subsequent times. In the limit of large Stefan numberα the pseudo-steady state and first order corrected motions arise from both approximations. Further, in the limit of no Newton cooling at the wall the large time solution gives rise to precisely the well known Stefan or Neumann solution. The validity of the approximations is illustrated numerically with reference to previous work and known upper and lower bounds.

    Effects of coexistence on the performance of white clover-perennial ryegrass mixtures (1985)

    Notes: Summary Yields from five white clover/perennial ryegrass mixtures, each based on coexisting components, were compared with those produced by ten mixtures whose constituents had no previous history of coexistence. The former group consisted of five paired clover/ryegrass populations, four collected from natural pastures and one from a sown pasture, whilst the latter group comprised the same five clover populations grown in turn with each of two ryegrass companions. In the first harvest year, when artificial fertilizer plus soil mineralization supplied most of the nitrogen to this experiment, the grasses were generally favoured at the expense of the clovers. Although those mixtures based on coexisting populations had significantly lower yields the clover within these mixtures made a significantly higher contribution to their productivity. This advantage was retained into the second harvest year when it was accompanied by a correlated response in the grasses, which by then may have become dependent upon the clover for their nitrogen supply. Consequently, by the end of the second harvest year those mixtures based on coexisting populations yielded over 20% more on average, due mainly to improved early season growth. Despite considerable differences in productivity, all five clover populations gave their highest yields when grown with their matching grass.

    Notes: Abstract The type A monoamine oxidase (MAO)-inhibiting antidepressant clorgyline (1 mg/kg/24 days) administered to rhesus monkeys increased night-time cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) melatonin concentrations 3-fold and day-time maltonin values 5-fold. Other circadian parameters of melatonin release, including the peak time and duration of nocturnal melatonin elevation measured during continuous CSF collection periods of 90 min duration over 24-h cycles, were unaffected by clorgyline. While pinealocytes are thought to contain only MAO-B, treatment with the selective MAO-B inhibitor deprenyl (2 mg/kg/24 days) did not alter day or night-time melatonin concentrations. These results are consistent with MAO-A and non-selective MAO inhibitors acting via blockade of degradation of the preferential substrates of MAO-A, serotonin and/or norepinephrine, in adrenergic neurons entering the pineal gland. Further study is needed to evaluate the relative contributions of an increased availability of the melatonin precursor, serotonin, or a sustained net increase in alpha1-or beta adrenoceptor-mediated input on pinealocytes to these marked changes in melatonin production.
