Notes: Double-heterostructure devices of type AlxGa1−xAs/GaAs have been fabricated in thin films grown by the cleavage of lateral epitaxial film for transfer process. The electron lifetime in the p-type GaAs is measured by photoluminescence and found to be 32 ns at the 5×1016 cm−3 doping level. This is the largest reported lifetime for a freestanding GaAs thin film.

Notes: Ab initio quadrupole coupling constants χ(D), χ(14N) for deuterium and nitrogen nuclei are obtained for the sequence of linear (HCN)n clusters (up to n=6) at the RHF/6-31+G* level, complementing previous studies of n-dependent "cooperative'' effects in these C–H...N hydrogen-bonded species. For the dimer and trimer, the theoretical values are compared with experimental equilibrium values of Gutowsky and co-workers and found to successfully reproduce both the magnitudes and patterns of measured shifts. For larger (HCN)n clusters, the n-dependent trends in χ(D), χ(14N) appear to be correlated with cooperativity effects found previously (binding energies, geometrical parameters, dipole moments, ir frequencies and intensities). This suggests that quadrupole coupling measurements can provide a useful probe of cooperative H-bonding phenomena in gaseous and condensed media. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: There are but a few days—of who shall say what importance—between the Julian and Gregorian calendars, considered as schemes for the interpretation of recurrent movements in our solar system. And yet, from the point of view of each, the other seems somewhat out in respect of the characterisation of nearly every year, month, week and individual day. The gap between the legal theories of John Austin and Professor Hart—between their models of the legal universe—is somewhat more than this. Its demonstration provides the foundation for Professor Hart's new book. But there may here be some analogy to what divides the concept of law, as elucidated by Professor Hart in terms of rules, from the concept of law as a system of action constructed by the writer in earlier numbers of this Journal. If Professor Hart now reveals himself as conceptual pragmatist as well as linguistic philosopher the writer's gratitude to Professor Hart in the latter capacity is only tinged with regret that he does not display greater boldness in the former.

Notes: “Philosophy is a battle ... to show the fly the way out of the fly bottle.” WittgensteinIntroduction to Jurisprudence, by the Quain Professor of Jurisprudence in the University of London, is an important work by a widely read author which should leave its mark, for better or worse, on all subsequent textbooks of Jurisprudence published in this country. In the breadth of the literature drawn on; in the attempt to evolve a textbook for students from a combination of readings and commentary; in its limitation of topics, it explores new ground. Its incursions into contemporary philosophy make it improbable that a textbook on Jurisprudence will ever again be attempted in this country by a lawyer who does not also claim to be a philosopher.Professor Jerome Hall, in his Readings in Jurisprudence (1938), omitted the traditional analyses of such particular subjects as property, ownership, tort and crime, as better left to the specialists in those subjects. Professor Edwin Patterson, in his Jurisprudence—Men and Ideas of the Law (1953), went one further and cut out the analysis of rights. This example is followed by Professor Lloyd, who is thus left only with sections on “Nature of Jurisprudence” and “Meaning of Law,” eight sections on the various theories of law and schools of writers, and a section on “Judicial Process.” Sore as is the need for the pruning of Jurisprudence as an examination subject it is suggested that this carries the process a little too far. It is based on no intelligible principle.

Notes: Abstract Imported willow leaf beetles Plagiodera versicolora oviposit on willow leaves, and both larvae and adults feed on the leaves. In the field, eggs were found on leaves near the center of branchlets, and the number of eggs per cluster was independent of the leaf area and position. However, in the laboratory, females chose young leaves over old leaves, for both oviposition and feeding and choice did not rely on information on relative position or size of leaves. Developing on young versus old leaves may provide both advantages and disadvantages. In the laboratory, larvae developed more quickly and attained a greater adult weight when fed young versus old leaves, perhaps because of increased mandibular wear of larvae fed old leaves. However, in the field, survival of eggs was lower on young versus old leaves. In the laboratory, rates of cannibalism and survivorship to adulthood did not differ on young versus old leaves.

Notes: Abstract Female Spalangia cameroni produced more offspring from younger house fly pupae, both when given a choice of host ages and when not given a choice. Host age did not affect offspring survivorship. Offspring were larger when they had developed on younger hosts and the effect was independent of offspring sex. Having previously parasitized old hosts versus young hosts did not reduce a female's production of offspring in subsequent hosts. Females distinguished between young and old hosts both in the light and in the dark. Females did not distinguish between host ages prior to physical contact with the host but could distinguish by the time they first began exploring a host by tapping it with their antennae; thus, they could distinguish before drilling into a host.

Notes: Abstract Three cases are reported of pyogenic (non-tuberculous) myositis involving the ilio-psoas and/or iliacus muscles in children presenting to John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle, Australia, in a 12-month period. In one, cultures grew Haemophilus influenzae type B and in the other two Staphylococcus aureus was isolated. Biopsy of the abscess cavity from the second child confirmed an antecedent haematoma as the underlying cause. The third had underlying sacroiliac septic arthritis with a history of antecedent trauma. The classification, investigation, and treatment of myositis is discussed.
