    Notes: Summary A 50-year-old patient developed a left temporal fibrochondrosarcoma 27 years after radiation therapy for a suspected pituitary adenoma. The long latency between the irradiation and the development of the sarcoma and the histological nature of the tumour are unusual features for a malignant radiation-induced intracranial tumour. The histogenesis of fibrochondrosarcoma of the brain is discussed.

    Notes: Raman spectroscopy is used to investigate strong band bending at the interface in semi-insulating substrates of ZnSe/GaAs heterostructures grown at high epitaxy rates. Direct evidence is given of the enhancement of polar modes strength, on the substrate side, by the electric field of the space-charge zone associated with Fermi-level pinning. The latter is qualitatively analyzed by following band flattening under illumination through the evolution of interfacial coupled LO-phonon–plasmon modes. Corresponding Raman line shapes are discussed within the phenomenological approach of D. H. Hon and W. L. Faust [Appl. Phys. 1, 241 (1973)]. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Apparent p-type conductivity in nonintentionally doped ZnSe layers, grown at high temperature on semi-insulating GaAs substrates, is investigated by Raman spectroscopy. The microprobe technique provides direct evidence for carrier location on the GaAs side of the structures, close to the interface. Line-shape analysis of the coupled LO phonon-plasmon mode for different exciting wavelengths can be achieved, within the model of Hon and Faust [Appl. Phys. 1, 241 (1973)], only when incorporating plasma inhomogeneity. Electronic band bending at the junction in GaAs is deduced from the inferred carrier-density profile. Changes in Raman spectra under strong illumination are shown to proceed from the flattening of the bands through selective carrier photoinjection. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A probabilistic risk assessment study has been undertaken in the French city of Lyons. The issue was to know whether it was justified to forbid hazardous material lorries in the city center and to divert them through the suburbs. Therefore, two routes, the City Center route and the Suburban route were compared. This paper describes the analysis and shows how the results were used in the decision-making process. It also lists the difficulties that are encountered when trying to incorporate formal risk analysis into actual decision-making processes. The risk analysis showed that rerouting is an effective option with respect to all criteria. The mathematical expectation of the number of deaths is divided by three, the reduction on the annual frequency of catastrophic accidents is even more important (about one order of magnitude for accidents involving more than 50 deaths). The spatial analysis proved that the risk was more evenly distributed along the Suburban route. However, the annual expected number of death is low: 0.5 in the worst case. So traditional decision-making approaches do not indicate the necessity of rerouting. Such a situation is believed to be typical for risk management of major hazards. In Lyons, the use of a very small risk aversion factor is sufficient to justify the rerouting option on a formal decision-aiding basis. This is rather unusual, but it is thought that the recognition of the importance of risk aversion by the decision-makers themselves is a very positive outcome from this study.

    Notes: The authors present results of a February 1987 survey on judged frequency of mortality causes and risk perception of technologies in a representative sample of the French population. Although the French context is very different, and the impact of public controversies have been very limited on technological choices such as the nuclear energy program, strong similarities in risk perception of technologies are observed with results from U.S. surveys. Results, which could be worthwhile for other countries, suggest that risk perception is influenced by two different types of components. The first influence is the global feeling of “security” that society procures to its members. Such feeling depends on the individual's socioeconomic status, subjective state of health, and personal discomfort in daily life, and explains individual aversion to risk independently of the mortality causes or technologies involved. The second influence is the degree of perceived social legitimization of the activities involving risks. Risks of medical and transportation activities are strongly opposed to illegitimate risky behaviors (smoking, drugs, alcohol); technologies which have been an object of public debate (nuclear plants, the chemical industry, lead in gasoline) have an intermediate position reflecting the remaining uncertainties of public opinion about their risk–benefit balancing. Tentative conclusions for risk communication are proposed.

    Notes: The activation of inhomogeneous electric field-induced Raman scattering (IEFIRS) at ZnSe/GaAs interfaces is investigated. The consideration of the inhomogeneous character of the electric field brings additional conditions on top of those predicted by the microscopic and perturbative approaches. These conditions concern the relative orientations of (i) the wave vector of the vibrational modes in the matter, (ii) the direction of the electric field at the junction, and (iii) the gradient vector of the electric field magnitude in the space charge regions. As latter vector has opposite directions in the layer and the substrate, IEFIRS is only observed from one side of the junction for a given scattering geometry. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The growth pattern of the root system of young rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis) was studied in relation to shoot development over a period of 3 months. Temporal and spatial variations in elongation and branching processes were examined for the different root types, by means of root observation boxes. Shoot growth was typically rhythmic. Root development was periodic and related to leaf expansion. Root elongation was depressed during leaf growth, whereas branching was enhanced. Consequently, highly branched areas with vigorous secondary roots alternated along the taproot with poorly branched areas with shorter roots. Root types were not affected to the same degree by shoot competition: during leaf expansion, taproot growth was just depressed but remained continuous, the emergence and elongation rates of secondary roots were significantly affected and the elongation rates of tertiary roots fell to zero. These results were consistent with the hypothesis that root growth is related to competition for assimilates and to the sink strength of the different root types, whereas root branching appeared to be promoted by leaf development.

    Notes: Aims: To establish the prevalence of CD44 protein expression in a large surgical series of Barrett's adenocarcinoma and associated preneoplastic lesions and to correlate this expression with clinicopathological data and prognosis.〈section xml:id="abs1-1"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods and results:CD44H and variants (V4/V5,V6) expression was detected by immunohistochemistry in formalin-fixed, paraffin wax tissue samples of Barrett's mucosa (50) and Barrett's adenocarcinoma (73) obtained from surgical resections from 73 patients. This expression was correlated with pathological features of the tumour and prognosis. CD44H and V6 expression was found in 62% and 55% of Barrett's specialized mucosa negative for dysplasia and in 70% and 63% of Barrett's adenocarcinoma, respectively. CD44H and V6 expression was restricted to the lower part of the crypts in Barrett's specialized mucosa negative for dysplasia and reached the upper part of the crypts in high-grade dysplasia. A significant relation was found between CD44V6 expression and depth of tumour invasion in the oesophageal wall (P = 0.05), neoplastic vascular invasion (P = 0.0001), neoplastic perineural invasion (P = 0.0004) and stage in Rosenberg's classification (P = 0.02). Cancers with CD44V6 expression had a significantly poorer prognosis (5-year survival: 17%) than those without (5-year survival: 44%) (P = 0.02) in univariate analysis. However, multivariate analysis showed that CD44V6 expression had no independent prognostic value when tumour invasion and lymph node involvement were taken as explanatory variables.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusion:CD44H and V6 are frequently expressed in Barrett's oesophagus. The pattern of expression that we observed from mucosa negative for dysplasia to adenocarcinoma suggests that CD44H and V6 may be involved in the carcinogenesis of Barrett's mucosa. CD44V6 expression in adenocarcinoma is correlated to aggressive pathological features.
