Notes: Abstract Since it is believed that CO2 is responsible for 55% of the greenhouse effect, a CO2 levy is now under consideration in several countries. For an assessment of the macroeconomic implications of an integrated energy and environmental policy we employ an applied general equilibrium model (AGE) since all sectors of an economy and all private households contribute to CO2 emission. Our model is a temporary equilibrium model with capacity extension under adjustment costs and with abatement activities for SO2 and NOx emissions. The model of consumer behavior will result in a system of consumer demand functions for non-durables as well as for durable goods. The simulations show the cost of inefficiency in resource allocation if CO2 taxes differ between industries and households. We finally present the marginal cost curve of CO2 emission reduction.

Notes: Analytical pyrolysis-atmospberic pressure ionization (Py-API) tandem mass Spectrometry was used in the structure elucidation of the oxidalive and non-oxidative thermal decomposition products of cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine (HMX). The [15NO2]-, [15N8]- and [2H8]-HMX isotope preparations provided fundamental information in the determination of the identities of the various pyrolyzate species. All RDX pyrolysis product ions that were identified by Py-API tandem mass Spectrometry, i.e. m/z 44, 60, 74, 75, 85 and 98, were present in the pyrolyzate of HMX. In both RDX and HMX investigations, these ions provided identical mass spectral daughter ion analyses. HMX, however, provided additional ions at m/z 30, 58, 69, 71, 83 and 141. Of all thirteen ions identified in the Py-APJ mass spectrum of HMX, only that at m/z 75 contained a nitrogen atom that originated from the NO2 group. Standards analysis confirmed the identities of the ions at m/z 69, 71 and 141 as methyleneaminoacetonitrile, methylaminoacetonitrile and the caged compound hoxamethylenetetraamine, respectively. Isotopic analyses provided a high degree of confidence on the structural assignments of the ions at m/z 30 and 58 as methyleneimine and methyleneformamide; the ion at m/z 83, however, appeared to be a heterocyclic compound with daughter ion mass spectral elements similar to but not identical with that of 1-methylimidazole and 3-methylpyrazole.

Notes: The oxidative pyrolysis-atmospheric-pressure chemical ionization tandem mass Spectrometry (Py-APCI MS/MS) of Cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX) was investigated under various sample introduction conditions. Subambient (0.97 atm) as opposed to ambient (0.98 atm) pressure (1 atm = 101325 kPa) facilitated the appearance of new pyrolysis mass spectral ions, including m/z 44. Deuterated decomposition products from [2H]RDX contained amide groups and, depending on the ion source pressure, significant differences in the degree of proton-deuterium exchange occurred on the amide groups. The D2O Py-APCI MS/MS method also confirmed and extended the analogous H2O APCI information from RDX, [2H]RDX and pure standards. The m/z 44 decompositon species was identified as protonated dimethylimine, [H3CN=CH2]+ as opposed to its primary amine isomer, [H3CC(H)=NH]H+, which contains an acidic proton. It was determined that m/z 60 is due to protonated N-methylformamide and acetaldoxime, [H3CC(H)=NOH]H+.

Description: The term Cape Verde Frontal Zone is introduced to characterize the southeastern corner of the subtropical gyre circulation in the North Atlantic Ocean far west of the upwelling area off the Mauretanean shelf. Two water mass fronts, one overlying the other, are identified with a quasi-synoptic set of CTD-OZ and nutrient data from November 1986. In the warm water sphere we encounter North and South Atlantic Central Water (NACWISACW) superimposed on extensions of Mediterranean outflow and Antarctic Intermediate Water. The Central Water Boundary, as the separator of NACW from SACW, represents the southeastern side of the Canary/North Equatorial Current system. It acts as a barrier between the well-ventilated, nutrient-poor inner part of the basin-wide circulation of the North Atlantic and the shadow zone with its lowly oxygenated and nutrified cross-equatorial influx. Year-long current meter records, having fluctuations over typical time scales of 5(1`90 days, attest to the highly variable nature of the Cape Verde Frontal Zone. Incidentally, we observe in the data an intrathermocline eddy, called Meddy BIRGIT, which has a double maximum in the vertical salinity structure. Simultaneous Lagrangian observations by RiCHAttDSON et al. (1989, Journal of Physical Oceanography, 19, 371-383) confirm the expected anticyclonic motion of this salt lens, which must have travelled without significant mixing for at least 2500 km from its likely generation region in the Gulf of Cadiz.

Description: Sections from two 'Polarstern' cruises in austral winter 1992 and summer 1992/93 were used to track the course of Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) in the Weddell Sea. Total inorganic carbon (TCO2) is a valuable tracer for that water mass because it allows to distinguish features that cannot be seen in the distributions of temperature and salinity. Upon entrance into the eastern Weddell Gyre, a shallow maximum in TCO2 at about 200 m (likewise a temperature maximum and oxygen minimum) indicates the depth level to which vertical mixing with Winter Water penetrates the CDW layer in the Weddell Gyre. The lower boundary of this CDW layer, which is not apparent in the temperature and salinity profiles, is a TCO2 maximum at 1000-1500 m (sq27.835), originating through the superposition of the recently advected CDW from the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and the Weddell Sea Deep Water (WSDW) with opposite vertical gradients. A coinciding, weak oxygen minimum is only present on the prime meridian and is probably caused bydifferent biological histories of the CDW and the WSDW underneath. Using this TCO2 maximum, the newly injected CDW can be traced as a well-defined band around the Weddell Sea up to south of the South Orkney plateau. Downstream in the northern limb of the Weddell Gyre at the prime meridian its trace has disappeared. The band of 'new' CDW, as part of the boundary current, envelopes a central area where currents are significantly smaller. In this interior a special modification of CDW, the Central Intermediate Water (CIW), can be distinguished. This water mass is characterised by a secondary TCO2 maximum and oxygen minimum, with no comparable structures in the temperature and salinitiy fields. CIW is enriched in CO2 compared to the CDW that enters the Weddell Gyre and is most pronounced in the western part of the Weddell basin. Data in the west suggest that the CIW is related to the lower part of the 'new'-CDW layer. Thus, the central Weddell basin is replenished from the west side rather than from the east. Within the interior the CDW is further modified by mixing with the WSDW below and by entrainment into the surface layer above. Part of it is also advected out of the Weddell Sea into the bottom layer of the ACC, conveying water that has been biologically enriched in CO2 to the abyssal oceans.
