Notes: Raman spectroscopy is used to investigate strong band bending at the interface in semi-insulating substrates of ZnSe/GaAs heterostructures grown at high epitaxy rates. Direct evidence is given of the enhancement of polar modes strength, on the substrate side, by the electric field of the space-charge zone associated with Fermi-level pinning. The latter is qualitatively analyzed by following band flattening under illumination through the evolution of interfacial coupled LO-phonon–plasmon modes. Corresponding Raman line shapes are discussed within the phenomenological approach of D. H. Hon and W. L. Faust [Appl. Phys. 1, 241 (1973)]. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Apparent p-type conductivity in nonintentionally doped ZnSe layers, grown at high temperature on semi-insulating GaAs substrates, is investigated by Raman spectroscopy. The microprobe technique provides direct evidence for carrier location on the GaAs side of the structures, close to the interface. Line-shape analysis of the coupled LO phonon-plasmon mode for different exciting wavelengths can be achieved, within the model of Hon and Faust [Appl. Phys. 1, 241 (1973)], only when incorporating plasma inhomogeneity. Electronic band bending at the junction in GaAs is deduced from the inferred carrier-density profile. Changes in Raman spectra under strong illumination are shown to proceed from the flattening of the bands through selective carrier photoinjection. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In the modern theory of finance, the valuation of derivative assets is commonly based on a replication argument. When there are transaction costs, this argument is no longer valid. In this paper, we try to address the general problem of finding the optimal portfolio among those which dominate a given derivative asset at maturity. We derive an interval for its price. the upper bound is the minimum amount one has to invest initially in order to obtain proceeds at least as valuable as the derivative asset. the lower bound is the maximum amount one can borrow initially against the proceeds of the derivative asset. We show that, in some instances, this interval may be strictly bounded above by the price of the replicating strategy. Prima facie, the cost of a dominating strategy should appear to be higher than that of the replicating one. But because trading is costly, it may pay to weigh the benefits of replication against those of potential savings on transaction costs.

Notes: The activation of inhomogeneous electric field-induced Raman scattering (IEFIRS) at ZnSe/GaAs interfaces is investigated. The consideration of the inhomogeneous character of the electric field brings additional conditions on top of those predicted by the microscopic and perturbative approaches. These conditions concern the relative orientations of (i) the wave vector of the vibrational modes in the matter, (ii) the direction of the electric field at the junction, and (iii) the gradient vector of the electric field magnitude in the space charge regions. As latter vector has opposite directions in the layer and the substrate, IEFIRS is only observed from one side of the junction for a given scattering geometry. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The scientific objective of the TRAC experiment (Turbulence Radar Aircraft Cells) was to investigate the respective roles played by small-scale turbulence and coherent structures in the vertical transfer within the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). Field research held in June 1993 in France was based on coupled aircraft and Doppler radar measurements. The results discussed here are mainly focused on the evaluation of the performance of the radar in the 3D description of the clear air ABL, which was the technical goal of TRAC. During the experiment, the radar was able to provide continuous and coherent echo fields over a range of several tens of kilometres, extending up to about 3 km. Good agreement was obtained in the ABL between the radar-derived turbulent quantities and airborne measurements. As depicted by the reflectivity fields, coherent organizations were found to be a common feature of the eleven ABL cases analyzed. These organizations evolved during the day between a banded structure and a cellular pattern. A very weak correlation was found between the reflectivity field and the atmospheric parameters measured by the aircraft. However, in terms of characteristic scale, the reflectivity field appeared to be strongly related to the water vapour field. The inhomogeneity induced by the coherent circulations questions the representativity of one-dimensional sampling of these 3D fields and suggests the need to adapt the traditional statistical approach of the ABL.

Notes: This article studies the influence of the heating rate and sample weight on the thermal decomposition of polystyrene (first-order kinetics). For this purpose, the kinetic parameters (i.e., frequency factor and activation energy), variables at the maximum decomposition rate (such as conversion, reaction rate, and temperature), as well as some characteristic temperatures have been determined for a series of experiments where the heating rate varies (0.5-11.5 K/min) and also, the sample weight (6.0-25.1 mg). Some mathematical equations have been developed that allow: (1) evaluation of the activation energy of thermal decomposition by different ways and comparing the results obtained; (2) relating different parameters between themselves, such as the heating rate with the temperature at the maximum decomposition rate or the frequency factor with the heating rate and sample weight. Finally, some theoretical explanations of the variation of thermal and kinetic parameters have been proposed. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
