Notes: A sinter-forging technique was successfully applied to fabricate a silicon nitride with a lutetia (Lu2O3) additive. The sinter-forged specimen had a strongly anisotropic microstructure where rodlike silicon nitride grains preferentially aligned perpendicular to the forging direction. The specimen exhibited superior strength of ∼700 MPa at 1500°C. This strength was highest when compared with previous silicon nitrides at temperatures 〉1400°C. Such superior high-temperature strength was attributed to grain alignment as well as to the refractory grain-boundary glassy phase and the existence of glass-free grain boundaries.

Notes: A porous CaZrO3/MgO composite with ∼1% nanodispersed platinum was synthesized in air using several in situ reactions, including the pyrolysis of PtO2. The composite had a uniformly open, three-dimensional pore structure (porosity of 56%), with a narrow pore-size distribution. Catalytic NO decomposition to N2 and O2 and NO reduction by C2H4 were investigated up to 900°C. In the absence of oxygen, the NO conversion rate reached ∼52% for the direct decomposition and ∼100% for the reduction by C2H4. The results suggested the possibility of the porous composite as a multifunctional filter for simultaneous filtering of hot gas and removal of NOx.

Notes: A 3-mol%-Y2O3-doped tetragonal-ZrO2 polycrystal/BaFe12O19 composite was fabricated by powder metallurgical processes, and its mechanical and magnetic properties were evaluated. Post-plastic deformation (i.e., hot-forging) on the composite improved its magnetic properties—that is, saturation magnetization and coercivity—probably because of the alignment of the hexaferrite platelet particles. Post-plastic deformation may represent a new process to complement conventional slurry-pressing under a magnetic field, for obtaining good magnetic properties in a magnetic-particle-dispersed composite.

Notes: Porous CaZrO3/MgO composites with a uniform three-dimensional (3-D) network structure have been successfully synthesized using reactive sintering of highly pure mixtures of natural dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2) and synthesized zirconia powders with LiF additive. Equimolar dolomite and zirconia powders doped with 0.5 wt% LiF were cold isostatically pressed at 200 MPa and sintered at 1100–1400°C for 2 h in air. Through the liquid formation via LiF doping, strong necks were formed between constituent particles before completion of the pyrolysis of dolomite, resulting in the formation of a 3-D network structure. During and after the formation of the network structure, CO2 was given off to form a homogeneous open-pore structure. The pore-size distribution was very narrow (with pore size ∼ 1 μm), and the porosity was controllable (e.g., ∼30%–50%) by changing the sintering temperature. The porous composites can be applied as filter materials with good structural stability at high temperatures.

Notes: The in situ formation of magnetoplumbite-type (M-type) hexaferrites within a 3Y-TZP matrix was examined for the La2O3–ZnO–Fe2O3 and BaO–Fe2O3 systems. The formation of barium hexaferrite (Ba-M) was rapid enough at a temperature of 1300°C for 2 h to result in a uniform dispersion of fine Ba-M particles in a tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (TZP) matrix. However, the formation of lanthanum-substituted hexaferrite (La-M) was rather sluggish, despite the existence of a charge-compensating divalent oxide. The 3Y-TZP/20-wt%-BaFe12O19in situ composite possessed good magnetic properties, as well as moderately good mechanical properties.

Notes: Porous CaZrO3/MgAl2O4 composites were synthesized in air by pressureless reactive sintering of an equimolar mixture of dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2), monoclinic zirconia (m-ZrO2), and α-alumina powders, with a 0.5 wt% lithium fluoride additive. The reaction behavior of the mixed powders (with/without LiF additive) was studied using high-temperature X-ray diffraction. A bulk porous composite resulted from sintering at 1300°C for 2 h (in a nearly closed container, so as to increase the LiF-doping effect), which consisted of fine grains (CaZrO3 and MgAl2O4, ∼0.5–1 μm) and well-grown idiomorphic ones (MgAl2O4 octahedra ∼ 2–4 μm). The idiomorphic spinel grains were located around the inner walls of relatively large pores. The composite showed appreciably high bending strength (σf= 110 ± 8 MPa for a porosity of 31%). The porous CaZrO3/MgAl2O4 composites can be applied as high-temperature filters and lightweight structural components.

Notes: The fracture energy of superplastically forged silicon nitride, where rodlike silicon nitride grains are aligned in one direction, was investigated at high temperatures from 1100° to 1300°C and at room temperature. Bending tests using chevron-notched beams were conducted at two displacement rates, 0.05 and 0.005 mm/min. The superplastically forged silicon nitride showed remarkably high fracture energies, 200–630 J/m2. The fracture energy was largely dependent on the temperature and the displacement rate. The high fracture energy was attributed to grain pullout enhanced by the softened grain-boundary glassy phase and the aligned rodlike grains.

Notes: Silicon nitride–silicon carbide (Si3N4–SiC) nanocomposites were fabricated by a process involving reaction bonding followed by superplastic sinter-forging. The nanocomposites exhibited an anisotropic microstructure, in which rod-shaped, micrometer-sized Si3N4 grains tended to align with their long axes along the material-flow direction. SiC particles, typically measuring several hundred nanometers, were located at the Si3N4 grain boundaries, and nanosized particles were dispersed inside the Si3N4 grains. A high bending strength of 1246 ± 119 MPa, as well as a high fracture toughness of 8.2 ± 0.9 MPa·m1/2, was achieved when a stress was applied along the grain-alignment direction.
