Notes: Chemokines are important mediators in immune responses and inflammatory processes of neuroimmunologic and infectious diseases. Although chemokines are expressed predominantly by cells of the immune system, neurons also express chemokines and chemokine receptors. We report herein that human neuronal cells (NT2-N) produce macrophage inflammatory protein-1α and -1β (MIP-1α and MIP-1β), which could be enhanced by interleukin (IL)-1β at both mRNA and protein levels. The addition of supernatants from human peripheral blood monocyte-derived macrophage (MDM) cultures induced MIP-1β mRNA expression in NT2-N cells. Anti-IL-1β antibody removed most, but not all, of the MDM culture supernatant-induced MIP-1β mRNA expression in NT2-N cells, suggesting that IL-1β in the MDM culture supernatants is a major factor in the induction of MIP-1β expression. Investigation of the mechanism(s) responsible for IL-1β-induced MIP-1α and -1β expression demonstrated that IL-1β activated nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) promoter-directed luciferase activity in NT2-N cells. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester, a potent and specific inhibitor of activation of NF-κB, not only blocked IL-1β-induced activation of the NF-κB promoter but also decreased IL-1β-induced MIP-1α and -1β expression in NT2-N cells. These data suggest that NF-κB is at least partially involved in the IL-1β-mediated action on MIP-1α and -1β in NT2-N cells. IL-1β-mediated up-regulation of β-chemokine expression may have important implications in the immunopathogenesis of inflammatory diseases in the CNS.

Notes: Sea water intrusion and remediation in the Upper Floridan Aquifer in South Carolina is simulated using the finite-element model SUTRA developed by the U.S. Geological Survey. A sensitivity analysis of the effect of the hydrogeologic parameters on the sea water recharge and seepage velocities is performed. An increase in confining unit and/or in aquifer conductivity results in an increase of the sea water recharge. An increase in aquifer porosity results in a decrease of the sea water recharge. Among the three remedial techniques simulated—reduced aquifer withdrawals, an injection well, and a combined injection and capture well—the reduced aquifer withdrawals and injection well are the best methods for preventing sea water intrusion.

    Notes: Abstract The isolobal reaction of the tetrahedral cluster Ph2C2Co2(CO)6with η5-CHOC5H4(CO)3MNa (M = Mo, W) yields η5-CHOC5H4MCoC2Ph2(CO)5 [(1) M = Mo, (2) M = W], whereas M–M singly-bonded dimers [η5-RC5H4- M(CO)3]2 [M = Mo, R = Ac; M = Mo, W, R = CHO] react with Co2(CO)8 to give η5-AcC5H4MoCo3(CO)11 (7) and η5-C5H5MCo3(CO)11 [(8) M = Mo, (9) M = W], respectively. While (1) and (2) react with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine to give phenylhydrazone derivatives η5-2,4-(NO2)2C6H3NHN=CHC5H4MCoC2Ph2(CO)5 [(3) M = Mo, (4) M = W], treatment of η5-AcC5H4MCoFe(CO)8(μ3-S) with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine produces corresponding derivatives η5-2,4-(NO2)2C6H3NHN=C(Me)C5H4MCoFe(CO)8(μ3-S) [(5) M = Mo, (6) M = W]. In addition, the cyclopentadienylformaldehyde ligand in the η5-CHOC5H4MoCoFe(CO)8(μ3-S) cluster can be decarbonylated in the presence of Co2(CO)8 to give the parent cluster η5-C5H5MoCoFe(CO)8(μ3-S)(10). This observation, together with the formation of (8) and (9) in the presence of Co2(CO)8 can be explained by the proposed mechanism.
