    Notes: Plane mirror interferometers are widely used in the measurement of x–y motions. Although large range planar motion can be measured, it suffers from very tight angular tolerance. In this article an interferometer system having improved angular range and linear resolution is developed. In the system, a tilted laser beam is incident to a plane mirror attached to a moving stage and an additional retroreflector and a plane mirror are placed off the stage to help return the measuring beam. In such a design both the resolution and angular tolerance are improved. Meanwhile, large travel ranges along both the x and y directions remain. The optical principle pertinent to the proposed optical configuration is explained and an optical path analysis is performed to establish the relation between the optical path change and the motion to be measured. Based on the established relation, design of system parameters and workspace analysis are also discussed. Experimental results including resolution test and scaling procedure are then demonstrated. Using the developed interferometer an x–y theta measurement scheme is introduced. In the proposed scheme, using three interferometers the rotation angle of an x–y theta stage can be obtained first and it can then be used to compensate errors of the measured linear motion. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Using monolithic alumina ceramics as the reference, the thermal shock behavior of the hot-pressed alumina matrix ceramics with 3 mol% neodymium titanate was investigated. The thermal shock resistance of the materials was evaluated by water quenching and a subsequent three-point bending test to determine the flexural strength degradation. The hot-pressed composite exhibited a temperature differential of the thermal shock resistance 120°C higher than the monolith, mainly because of significantly improved fracture toughness.

    Notes: The compaction behavior of fine alumina powders with different particle sizes or bimodal particle-size distributions that are undergoing pressure filtration was investigated. Three alumina powders—average particle sizes of 0.2—0.86 μm—were compacted to a solids fraction of 62—65 vol% from suspensions at pH 3, which was the pH level at which the suspensions showed their lowest viscosity. When the powders of different average sizes were mixed, the suspensions showed better flowability, and the lowest viscosity was obtained when the fraction of fines was ∼30 vol% and pH = 3. The mixed-sized powder suspensions were compacted to higher density than the suspensions of unmixed fine or coarse powders, and the maximum density was obtained for mixed suspensions that had the lowest viscosity, despite the different particle-size ratio. Maximum densities of 72.5% and 75.0% were attained when the size ratios were 2 and 5, respectively. The compacts that were pressure-filtered from mixed suspensions exhibited a single-peaked pore-size distribution and a homogeneous microstructure, whereas the pore-size distributions of dry-pressed compacts were double-peaked. The sintering behavior of the compacts that were pressure-filtrated from bimodal powders exhibited significantly better sinterability and much-less linear shrinkage than the coarser powders and the dry-pressed powder compacts.

    Notes: Abstract A Bayesian approach is developed to assess the factor analysis model. Joint Bayesian estimates of the factor scores and the structural parameters in the covariance structure are obtained simultaneously. The basic idea is to treat the latent factor scores as missing data and augment them with the observed data in generating a sequence of random observations from the posterior distributions by the Gibbs sampler. Then, the Bayesian estimates are taken as the sample means of these random observations. Expressions for implementing the algorithm are derived and some statistical properties of the estimates are presented. Some aspects of the algorithm are illustrated by a real example and the performance of the Bayesian procedure is studied using simulation.

    Notes: Abstract: A theoretical study is performed on the confined electron and shallow donor states properties in graded GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs spherical quantum dots. The two lowest energy levels of a confined electron are obtained taking into account the dependence of the electron effective mass on the spatial profile of the Al molar fraction. The ground state of a single Si shallow donor, which may be located at an arbitrary position in the structure, is calculated through a variational approach. Depending on the dot interface width and localization, we find that the energy levels of the electron and donor states for the system under study can be blue or red shifted appreciably in comparison to those calculated within the sharp interface picture. We show that it is necessary to have accurate information concerning the interface of semiconductor dots whose samples are used in the experiments, in order to achieve a better understanding of their optical properties.

    Notes: Abstract: On the basis of Bethe ansatz solution of the one dimensional SU(4) Hubbard-like model, we have studied its thermodynamic properties by means of the Yang-Yang thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. The Landé g factors for both spin and orbit are taken into account so as to describe electrons with orbital degeneracy. The free energy at low temperature is given and the specific heat both in the strong coupling and weak coupling limits are obtained. At the same time, we also point out the three possible critical fields, which may cause a quantum phase transition.

    Notes: Abstract: We define a concept of “regularity” for finite unitary reflection groups, and show that an irreducible finite unitary reflection group of rank greater than 1 is regular if and only if it is a Coxeter group. Hence we get a characterization of Coxeter groups among all the irreducible finite reflection groups of rank greater than one.

Thispaper reports the results of a comparative study inmeasuring stress among university faculty in Chinaand Japan using a questionnaire survey. It analyzes therelationship between stress and health indifferent age groups of the faculty and thedifferences in the nature and structure of the stressbetween China and Japan. The research suggests thatstress of Chinese and Japanese university facultycan be described as ``social-transformation stress'' and``direction-conflict stress'', respectively.
