    Notes: Transparency of the skin is an important keyword that is frequently used in questionnaires related to the female skin condition and skin consciousness, as well as an index for ‘before and after’ comparisons of the effect of cosmetics. However, the concept of ‘transparency’ has not been concretely defined. In the present study, we investigated the importance of ‘transparent skin’ and the relationship between transparency and other expressions for skin condition comparing the young with middle-aged and elderly women. Furthermore, we also analyzed the correlation between the subjective assessment score of transparency of panels made by evaluators and the skin physiological parameters of those panels, and compared the difference of their relationship when the young and middle-aged and elderly women were employed as evaluators. Regarding the consciousness of the young women, the importance of ‘transparent skin’ was ranked in the top position while ‘skin roughness’ was the chief worry of the middle-aged and elderly women. On the other hand, both age groups indicated that transparent skin is a complex concept composed of skin texture, color, and moisture. Analysis of the relationship between the subjective assessment and the skin physiological parameters showed that the uneven dispersion of b in the skin color (standard deviation), the water content of stratum corneum, and the skin surface configuration (depth of furrows, amount of furrows) closely correlated with the judgment of skin transparency in the young group, in contrast to the uneven dispersion of L and a in the skin color (standard deviation) in the middle-aged and elderly women. These results suggest that there may be no differences between the different age groups in the linguistic concept of transparency, while there may be differences in the physiological characteristics of skin that are utilized in making the judgment of transparency.

    Notes: Accumulating evidence suggests that both oxytocin and arginine vasopressin (AVP) are vital components in the regulation of body fluid balance. However, the physiological role of oxytocin and possible cooperative interactions between oxytocin and AVP in sodium balance remain obscure, even though recent studies using oxytocin knockout (OTKO) mice suggested that oxytocin may contribute to the regulation of salt appetite. In the present study, we examined the effects of salt loading (drinking 2% NaCl for 5 days) on the expression of the AVP gene in the paraventricular (PVN) and supraoptic nuclei (SON) of wild-type, OTKO and heterozygous littermates using in situ hybridization histochemistry. In addition, the effects of salt loading on the expression of the oxytocin gene were also examined in wild-type and heterozygous mice. Under the non salt-loaded condition, the levels of AVP mRNA in the PVN and SON of OTKO mice were significantly decreased compared to those in wild-type mice. Nevertheless, the up-regulation of the expression of the AVP gene in response to salt loading was preserved in OTKO mice. The degree of the up-regulation in OTKO mice tended to be greater compared to those in wild-type mice, suggesting compensatory up-regulation of the expression of the AVP gene in OTKO mice after salt loading. The basal levels of oxytocin mRNA in the PVN and SON of heterozygous mice were significantly lower than those in wild-type mice. Salt loading caused an increase of oxytocin mRNA levels in the PVN and SON of both wild-type and heterozygous mice. The ratios of increase of oxytocin mRNA levels were very similar between wild-type and heterozygous mice, suggesting that the single remaining oxytocin gene in heterozygous mice responds normally to an osmotic cue. Finally, salt loading tended to increase the serum concentration of sodium regardless of genotype, and there were no genotype differences in both the control and salt-loaded groups. These results suggest ways in which oxytocin may play a cooperative role together with AVP in the regulation of sodium balance.

    Notes: The neuropeptide oxytocin is released not only into the blood, but also within the brain in response to various stressors. Accumulating evidence suggests that central oxytocin may play a major role in the regulation of neuroendocrine responses to stress. In the present study, using the oxytocin knockout mouse model, we tested whether oxytocin might act to attenuate stress-induced up-regulation of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) mRNA expression in the brain. The expression of CRH mRNA in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) after 4 h of restraint stress was examined in oxytocin gene-deficient (OTKO), wild-type and heterozygous male mice using in situ hybridization histochemistry. We found that basal levels of CRH mRNA were not different among the three genotypes. Although restraint stress resulted in a significant increase of CRH mRNA expression in the PVN regardless of genotype, the degree of stress induced-up-regulation was significantly higher in OTKO mice than in wild-type mice. The effects of restraint stress on the expression of the arginine vasopressin (AVP) and the oxytocin genes were also examined. Unlike CRH mRNA, basal expression (in nonstressed control groups) of AVP mRNA in OTKO mice, as well as oxytocin mRNA in heterozygous mice, was significantly lower in the PVN and the supraoptic nucleus than in wild-type mice. After restraint stress, the expression of AVP mRNA was significantly increased in the PVN of OTKO mice compared to the nonstressed control group, whereas the expression of both AVP and oxytocin mRNA were unchanged in the PVN and the supraoptic nucleus of wild-type and heterozygous mice. Finally, in a separate set of mice, restraint stress-induced Fos expression was also examined in several brain regions involved in stress response, including the lateral septum, the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), the medial preoptic area, the PVN, the medial and central amygdala using immunohistochemistry. After 90 min of restraint stress, the number of Fos-expressing cells significantly increased in all brain regions examined regardless of genotype. However, the number of stress-induced Fos-expressing cells in the BNST and the medial amygdala of OTKO mice was significantly lower than in wild-type mice. Collectively, the findings in the present study suggest that oxytocin may regulate stress-induced CRH gene expression in the PVN. Furthermore, neuronal activity in the BNST and the medial amygdala may be involved in this neuroendocrine regulatory system.

    Notes: Helicobacter pylori infection is involved in the formation of chronic peptic ulcer. However, a previously reported hypothesis concerning the involvement of central autonomic nervous disorder in this condition cannot be ruled out.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Aim:To use spectrum analysis of heart rate viability to examine autonomic nervous activity before and after H. pylori eradication.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:Twenty patients with chronic duodenal ulcer (duodenal ulcer group) and 20 age-matched normal adults (N group). In both groups, 24-h Holter electrocardiograms (ECGs) were recorded and spectrum analysis of heartrate variability was performed. In the duodenal ulcer group, Holter ECG was recorded before and after H. pylori eradication.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:In the N group, analysis of heart rate variability showed that high frequency (HF) power, an index of parasympathetic activity, was high at night, while the low frequency (LF)/HF ratio, an index of sympathetic function, was high during the daytime. In the duodenal ulcer group, HF power was higher at night than during the daytime, showing a similar pattern to the N group, but the power value was higher than in the N group (P 〈 0.05). In the duodenal ulcer group, LF/HF at night was significantly higher than that of the N group. In addition, in the duodenal ulcer group, autonomic activity after H. pylori eradication did not differ significantly from that before H. pylori eradication.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions:In patients with chronic peptic ulcer, both sympatheticotonia and parasympatheticotonia may occur at night, and this abnormality in autonomic nervous activity may cause increased gastric acid secretion and gastric mucosal vasoconstriction. Abnormalities in autonomic activity persist even after H. pylori eradication, suggesting that they may be an independent risk factor in the formation of chronic peptic ulcer in addition to H. pylori infection.

    Notes: Background: The relationship between 1/f fluctuation of the heart rate variability and Helicobacter pylori infection was evaluated, in order to clarify whether autonomic nervous dysfunction is a necessary condition for chronic peptic ulcer formation. Methods: The subjects were 11 patients with recurrent chronic peptic ulcer and 20 age-matched normal subjects. Holter ECGs were recorded over 24 h, and the 1/f –x fluctuation of the heart rate was computed. The 1/f –x fluctuation of the heart rate is a novel index of autonomic function that has been shown to reflect a patient's pleasant mood. For 1/f –x fluctuation, the slope of the regression line (–x) was determined and cosine fitting of the absolute slope of the regression line over a 24-h period was performed. Results: For the normal group, the absolute slope of the regression line during daytime and night-time were 0.53 ± 0.16 and 1.05 ± 0.18, respectively. For the peptic ulcer group, the corresponding values during daytime and night-time were 0.94 ± 0.15 and 1.84 ± 0.18, respectively. The mean value of the cosine curve was 0.76 ± 0.23 in the normal group and 1.12 ± 0.25 in the peptic ulcer group. Thus, these values were significantly higher for the latter group than for the former group (P 〈 0.05). No statistically significant difference in H. pylori infection between the two groups was observed. Conclusions: Autonomic nervous dysfunction as well as H. pylori infection appears to be a necessary condition for chronic peptic ulcer formation.

    Notes: Background : Nitrates decrease the tone of the lower oesophageal sphincter, and may thus induce gastro-oesophageal reflux.Aim : In the present study, we evaluated electrogastrographic changes and heart-rate variability before and after the administration of nitrates.Methods : In 15 patients with chest pain treated with nitrates, electrocardiography and percutaneous electrogastrography were performed before and after administration of nitrates. Autonomic nervous system function was evaluated by spectral analysis of heart-rate variability and serial changes in low frequency and high frequency power, and the low frequency/high frequency ratio were compared. Electrogastrograms were analysed by obtaining peak power amplitudes and their dominant frequencies.Results : After the administration of nitrates (isosorbide dinitrate), high frequency power, an index of parasympathetic nervous activity, was significantly decreased, whereas the low frequency/high frequency ratio, an index of sympathetic nervous activity, was significantly increased. The mean peak amplitude of the electrogastrogram significantly increased postprandially both before and after treatment. After isosorbide dinitrate treatment, however, mean peak amplitudes after a meal were significantly lower than those obtained before treatment. The mean dominant frequency of the electrogastrogram did not vary before and after treatment.Conclusions : The present study suggests that nitrates inhibit gastrointestinal motility by decreasing autonomic nervous activity.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of chloride, bromide and iodide additions on the internal stress developed in nickel films deposited during high speed electroplating from nickel sulfamate baths operated close to the nickel ion limiting current density were investigated. The variations in internal strain in the films were detected in situ using a resistance wire-type strain gauge placed on the reverse side of the copper substrate. The film resistance on the as-plated electrodes was measured using an electronic current interrupter technique. The effects of chloride, bromide, and iodide additions could be classified into two groups: (a) chloride and bromide ions, and (b) iodide ions. For chloride and bromide additions over the concentration range of 0.1 to 0.5 M, the nickel deposits exhibited a block- and pyramid-like texture with a (200) crystal orientation. The internal tensile stress developed in 20 μm thick nickel films deposited in the presence of these two halides was as low as 140–170 MPa. Conversely, for additions of iodide, at iodide concentrations greater than 0.1 M the deposited nickel exhibited a fine granular texture of disordered crystal orientation. The internal tensile stress developed in 20 μm thick nickel films deposited from these latter baths tended to rise with increasing iodide concentration to values considerably higher than those observed at similar concentrations of NiCl2 or NiBr2.
