    Notes: Abstract. Leaching of phosphorus (P) from agricultural land is the major cause of eutrophication of surface waters in Northern Ireland. However, soil testing using the Olsen method has shown that while soil P in some catchment areas of the Province is low, surface waters within these catchments are, nonetheless, every bit as eutrophic as other local catchments where soil P is high. Soil P measurements on over 6000 samples from Northern Ireland soils (A horizon only) have indicated that Olsen-P values of improved grassland on most parent materials are linearly related to animal intensification. Exceptions are soils derived from peat, marl and basalt. For each of the latter soils, the measured Olsen-P was shown to be around 10 mg L–1 lower than expected for farms with similar intensification on other parent materials. In particular, the mean Olsen-P values of samples from basaltic soils under grass with total Fe above 62 g kg–1 and total Mg above 16 g kg–1 were significantly lower than those from basaltic soils with low total Fe (〈37 g kg–1) and total Mg (〈8 g kg–1). As a result of the depressed Olsen-P value, excessive quantities of P may be applied to these soils to maintain a recommended soil P index thereby enhancing the potential for nutrient enrichment of adjacent surface waters. In such cases, coworkers have shown that acid ammonium oxalate may be a better extractant than bicarbonate as an indicator of plant-available P.

    Notes: Abstract. Precision Agriculture seeks to match resource application and agronomic practice with soil and crop requirements as they vary in both space and time. Therefore, an understanding of both the temporal and the spatial components of variability is essential before decisions can be made about the feasibility of site-specific management. In the present study, the spatial and the temporal components of variability in certain key soil properties of a grassland field were evaluated to assess the likely feasibility of adopting a site-specific approach to grassland management. A 7.9 ha grassland field was selected for the study and soil samples were taken three times at regular 25 m intervals across the field over a two year period, and chemically analysed. Classical and geostatistical procedures were used to evaluate the spatial variability and the temporal stability of soil property distributions. Soil extractable P and K had the greatest within-field variability and soil pH the least. Soil K distributions were also highly unstable over time and it was concluded that the optimal risk aversion strategy would be to apply uniform dressings of this nutrient to the entire field. In contrast, soil pH, P, Mg and sulphate distributions were not only temporally stable, but were also spatially correlated over reasonably large ranges. It was concluded that these properties might be managed in a site-specific way based on the results of periodic soil testing in three clearly defined management sub-units within the field. Over the two year period, C and N accumulated in the soil at surprisingly high rates on certain parts of the field but not in others.

    Notes: Abstract. Diffuse soluble reactive P (SRP) & total P (TP) loads from over 50 major river catchments in Northern Ireland were predicted using an export coefficient modelling approach. Phosphorus export coefficients for each CORINE land cover class, derived from satellite imagery, allowed the prediction of P loads from a breakdown of the CORINE land cover classes by catchment using a GIS. This approach was validated using observed P loads calculated from flow and concentration data. Mean measured Olsen-P concentrations in the soil A-horizon were also determined on a catchment basis. Plots of P loads to the watercourse versus Olsen-P concentrations in the soil showed a breakpoint around 22 mg Olsen- P l−1 for both SRP & TP data. Below Olsen-P concentrations of 22 mg l−1, SRP & TP losses were essentially independent of Olsen-P at 0.28 and 0.63 kg P ha−1 yr−1, respectively. Above Olsen-P concentrations of 22 mg l−1, there was considerable spread in the P loss data. Nevertheless, significant upward trends in SRP and TP losses to watercourses were detected with increasing Olsen-P at a rate of approximately 0.5 and 1.0 kg P ha−1 yr−1, for SRP and TP respectively, for each 10 mg l−1 increase in Olsen-P.

    Notes: In the Siberian hamster, Phodopus sungorus, short-day photoperiods induce the winter phenotype, which in males includes a decrease in the production of androgens and changes in physiology to inhibit reproduction. Motoneurones of the spinal nucleus of the bulbocavernosus (SNB) and their target muscles, the bulbocavernosus and the levator ani, a neuromuscular system involved in male copulation, also display seasonal plasticity in P. sungorus. It is not known whether the plasticity seen in the SNB system of gonadally intact hamsters is due to the effects of photoperiod per se, or to the photoperiod-induced changes in androgen production. To answer this question, we castrated adult male hamsters from long days and then implanted them with capsules containing either testosterone or blanks. Half of the hamsters from each hormone condition were moved into short photoperiod (8 : 16 h light/dark cycle) while the rest were maintained under long-day conditions (15 : 9 h light/dark cycle). After 15 weeks, many measures of the SNB system, such as somata size and weight of target muscles, responded only to androgen, not to photoperiod. However, there were effects of photoperiod on the neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) that were independent of androgen status. For example, the number of synaptic zones per NMJ and the area of the NMJs were significantly increased by short days and/or testosterone treatment. The two factors exerted an additive, rather than an interactive, effect on these measures. Another striated muscle, the extensor digitorum longus, which is present in both sexes and plays no specialized role in reproduction, displayed neither an effect of androgen nor of photoperiod on fibre size or NMJ structure. These results suggest that, in addition to androgenic effects on SNB plasticity, there is also an androgen-independent effect of photoperiod on the SNB neuromuscular system.

    Notes: Abstract Simultaneous observations of the slow solar wind off the southeast limb of the Sun were made in May 1999 using optical measurements from the C2 and C3 LASCO coronagraphs on board the SOHO spacecraft and radio-scattering measurements from the MERLIN and EISCAT facilities. The observations show the slow solar wind accelerating outwards from 4.5 solar radii (R), reaching a final velocity of 200–300 km s-1 by 25–30 R. The acceleration profile indicated by these results is more gentle than the average profile seen in earlier LASCO observations of larger scale features, but is within the variation seen in these studies.

    Notes: Abstract Quantifying spatial variability in forage grass yield within individual fields is hampered by the lack of accurate yield monitoring equipment. Here, it is shown how dry matter (DM) yield of silage swards can be predicted on the basis of their mineral composition. This empirical method of predicting yield enables diagnoses of sward nutrient status to be made simultaneously from the tissue test information, and provides a unique opportunity for identifying the nutritional and non-nutritional factors responsible for variability in sward productivity at sub-field scales. Maps of sward DM yield at first, second and third cut silage stages in 1999, and at first cut silage stage in 2000, on a large (7.9 ha) grassland field were produced using two different yield models: one model for first cut and a separate model for second and third cuts. The maps indicated that DM production varied considerably across the field, particularly at first cut, but that the pattern of yield variability at this cut was consistent from 1999 to 2000. The results of the plant tissue tests suggested that N deficiency had been responsible for limiting DM production on the lower yielding parts of the field.

    Notes: Abstract Unlike the situation for arable soils, virtually nothing is known about the spatial dependencies of soil properties in cool temperate grassland or about what the optimal sampling strategies ought to be for mapping soil nutrient distributions in such situations. The aim of this study was to investigate the spatial variability in ‘plant-available’ (soil) phosphorus and potassium in a grass silage field in Northern Ireland and devise ‘optimal’ sampling strategies for mapping their distributions. Soil samples were collected from the field at 25 m intervals in a regular rectangular grid to provide a database of soil properties. Different data combinations were subsequently abstracted from this database for comparison purposes, and ordinary kriging used to produce interpolated soil maps. Soil potassium displayed greater spatial variability than soil phosphorus. In keeping with this observation, the results of three separate statistical procedures demonstrated that the optimal sample size for estimating the ‘true’ population means was about twice as large for soil potassium as for soil phosphorus. Optimal sampling strategies, however, related not just to sample size but to sample combination and field shape as well.
