    Notes: Rapid eutectic growth in a highly undercooled liquid was accomplished by containerlessly processing Co–Mo eutectic alloy in a drop tube. The containerless state during free fall produces substantial undercoolings up to 391 K (0.24TE) in falling droplets before crystallization. The eutectic growth mechanism is found to transform from lamellar eutectic to anomalous eutectic if the droplet undercooling exceeds a critical value of about 56 K, which coincides well with the lower boundary of the calculated eutectic coupled zone. Although the reduced gravity level of 10−2–10−3 g has little influence on this eutectic growth mechanism transition, it frequently results in the formation of spherical anomalous eutectic grains owing to the symmetrical temperature field and concentration field surrounding solid/liquid interface. Both theoretical analyses and experimental observations indicate that the independent nucleation and cooperative branched growth of two eutectic phases are responsible for the eutectic growth mechanism transition. The three-dimensional structural model of anomalous eutectic grain is a two-phase composite dendrite. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Co is undercooled to 227 K (0.128 Tm) and its specific heat has been determined as 40.6 Jmol−1 K−1 by electromagnetic levitation drop calorimeter, whose good accuracy is verified by the measured specific heat data of pure nickel. On the basis of measured specific heat data, the thermodynamic properties, such as thermodynamic driving force and relative nucleation rate, are calculated. Moreover, the theoretical models of Turnbull and Dubey–Ramachandrarao are also used to calculate the thermodynamic properties for a comparison. It is found that both the thermodynamic driving force and relative nucleation rate have large deviation compared with the calculated results based on experimental data. This indicates that, since the deviation of specific heat value has a drastic influence on thermodynamic driving force and nucleation rate for the undercooled liquid metals, it is necessary to measure the specific heat quantitatively by experiments. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Green upconversion emissions at 548 and 528 nm have been obtained from sol-gel derived nanocrystalline Er3+:BaTiO3 films under 980 nm excitation. The green emissions are attributed to the ground-state (4I15/2) -directed transitions from 2H11/2 (528 nm) and 4S3/2 (548 nm) of Er3+ ions. Analysis of the temporal evolution of the emission at 548 nm shows that both excited state absorption of individual ion and energy transfer between the two neighboring ions contribute to the upconversion emissions in Er3+ (3 mol %):BaTiO3 film. The lifetime of the dominant emission at 548 nm is about 90 μs. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary. This paper examines a unique hypothesis regarding an important role for taurine in renal development. Taurine-deficient neonatal kittens show renal developmental abnormalities, one of several lines of support for this speculation. Adaptive regulation of the taurine transporter gene is critical in mammalian species because maintenance of adequate tissue levels of taurine is essential to the normal development of the retina and the central nervous system. Observations of the remarkable phenotypic similarity that exists between children with deletion of bands p25-pter of chromosome 3 and taurine-deficient kits led us to hypothesize that deletion of the renal taurine transporter gene (TauT) might contribute to some features of the 3p-syndrome. Further, the renal taurine transporter gene is down-regulated by the tumor suppressor gene p53, and up-regulated by the Wilms tumor (WT-1) and early growth response-1 (EGR-1) genes. It has been demonstrated using WT-1 gene knockout mice that WT-1 is critical for normal renal development. In contrast, transgenic mice overexpressing the p53 gene have renal development defects, including hypoplasia similar to that observed in the taurine-deficient kitten. This paper reviews evidence that altered expression of the renal taurine transporter may result in reduced intracellular taurine content, which in turn may lead to abnormal cell volume regulation, cell death and, ultimately, defective renal development.

    Description: The internal microstructure of a ferromanganese nodule (#2392, from 154°37.52′W, 9°37.56′N, at water depth 5194 m) was examined in detail on polished sections, and radiometrically dated (230Thex/232Th) along a high-resolution (0.1 mm) depth profile (0–1.3 mm), spanning approximately 271 ka. The fabric shows typical stromatolithic structure and exhibits four orders of basic cyclic growth pattern, namely laminae bands, laminae zones, laminae groups and laminae pairs having average thicknesses of 402–454, 185–206, 58–67 and 15–18 μm, respectively. A profile from the depth of 200–2661 μm was selected to obtain the geochemical series using line-scanning electron microprobe analyses, which provide a record of paleoceanographic oscillations during the growth period. Power spectral analysis of the geochemical series for Al, Mn, Fe and Fe/Mn from the depth of 200–1220 μm, where no obvious discontinuity could be observed, display conspicuous cyclicities. The cycles of laminae zones, laminae groups and laminae pairs are reflected in the spectral patterns as well. The significant spectral peaks are located at 186, 108, 66 μm. Together with the cycle of laminae bands, the ratios of these cyclicities are close to those of Milankovitch orbital cycles. Through tuning to orbital cycles, a net growth rate of 4.5 mm/Ma is derived for the profile, which is in perfect agreement with the growth rate of 4.6 mm/Ma determined by 230Thex/232Th dating. Therefore, the rhythmic growth of ferromanganese nodules appears definitely associated with Milankovitch cycles, and the growth cyclicities may offer a new tool for estimating growth rates of ferromanganese nodules and paleoenvironmental reconstruction at substage resolution when supported by radiometric dating.

    Description: In the Campeche Knolls, in the southern Gulf of Mexico, lava-like flows of solidified asphalt cover more than 1 square kilometer of the rim of a dissected salt dome at a depth of 3000 meters below sea level. Chemosynthetic tubeworms and bivalves colonize the sea floor near the asphalt, which chilled and contracted after discharge. The site also includes oil seeps, gas hydrate deposits, locally anoxic sediments, and slabs of authigenic carbonate. Asphalt volcanism creates a habitat for chemosynthetic life that may be widespread at great depth in the Gulf of Mexico.
