Notes: Abstract. We present a detailed next-to-leading order (NLO) leading twist QCD analysis of deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) observables, for several different input scenarios, in the $\overline{\mbox{MS}}$ scheme. We discuss the size of the NLO effects and the behavior of the observables in skewedness $\zeta$ , momentum transfer,t, and photon virtuality, $q^2=-Q^2$ . We present results on the amplitude level for unpolarized and longitudinally polarized lepton probes, and unpolarized and longitudinally polarized proton targets. We make predictions for various asymmetries and for the DVCS cross section and compare with the available data.

Notes: Abstract. In this paper, I will explain in as simple and intuitive physical terms as possible what generalized parton distributions are, what new information about the structure of hadrons they convey and therefore what picture of the hadron will emerge. To develop this picture, I will use the example of deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) and exclusive meson electroproduction processes. Based on this picture, I will then make some general predictions for these processes.

Notes: A new approach to focusing X-ray optics based on asymmetric inclined (or rotated inclined) diffraction has been experimentally studied. Using a linear longitudinal W-groove cut into the surface of an asymmetric silicon (111) diffractor perpendicularly to the line of intersection of its surface and crystallographic (111) planes, the out-of-diffraction-plane (or sagittal) deviation of the X-ray diffracted beam has been measured for three angles of asymmetry and constant angle of inclination on BM5 at the ESRF for a wavelength of 0.1 nm. It has been demonstrated that in the grazing-emergence case the sagittal deviation increases with increasing asymmetry angle. A discrepancy with the theoretical value for the largest asymmetry angle and inhomogeneities in the contrast of the diffraction spot have been discussed.

Notes: The possibility of concentrating a synchrotron X-ray beam using diffraction by a single crystal with a properly designed transverse groove on its surface, suggested earlier, has been studied experimentally. Here, the first experimental demonstration of this effect is reported, performed on beamline BM5 at the ESRF. The experimental result confirms the theoretical model.

Notes: A very simple method of sagittal focusing of X-ray synchrotron radiation is presented. A special ray-tracing program which utilizes the diffraction–refraction effect is developed. It is demonstrated both by ray-tracing simulations and by an experiment whereby a reasonably good sagittal concentration of 8 keV synchrotron radiation may be achieved by diffraction on the walls of a cylindrical hole drilled into an Si crystal. The holes were drilled parallel to the (111) planes and their diameter, 1 mm, was chosen so that the focusing distance fits the geometrical arrangement of beamline BM5 at the ESRF. Two such crystals have been used in a dispersive and non-dispersive arrangement. The better result was achieved using the dispersive arrangement. The intensity at the centre of the focus is increased by five times with respect to unfocused radiation. Excellent agreement exists between the ray-tracing simulations and experimental results.

Notes: Abstract. In this paper, we discuss the feasibility of measuring deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) on nuclei in a collider setting, as for example, the planned high-luminosity Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). We demonstrate that employing our recent model for nuclear generalized parton distributions (nGPDs), the one-photon unpolarized DVCS cross section as well as the azimuthal and spin asymmetry are of the same size as in the proton case. This will allow for an experimental extraction of nuclear GPDs with high precision, shedding new light not only on nuclear shadowing at small x Bj but also on the interplay of shadowing and nuclear enhancement at $x_{\mathrm{Bj}} \sim0.1$ .
