    Notes: We present a theoretical treatment of surface–field THz generation in semiconductors, which explains the power enhancement observed when a magnetic field is applied. Our model consists of two parts: a Monte Carlo simulation of the dynamics of carriers generated by a subpicosecond optical pulse, and a calculation of the resulting THz radiation emitted through the semiconductor surface. The magnetic field deflects the motion of the carriers, producing a component of the THz dipole parallel to the surface. This causes the power transmitted through the surface to be increased by more than one order of magnitude. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present evidence of an enhanced ballistic phonon component resulting from surface events in a 100 g silicon cryogenic dark matter detector. Surface events, calibrated using a 14C electron source, were found to have faster rise times (∼5 μs) than bulk gamma and neutron events (∼7 μs). Using this effect, we were able to discriminate bulk nuclear recoil events from a surface electron background at better than the 97% level above 25 keV recoil energy. The phonon risetime for bulk gamma events was dependent on the applied voltage, confirming that phonons produced from electron-hole emission are ballistic. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary In a randomised, double-blinded, two-centre trial we evaluated the effect of a microbiological filter (Supor®, Pall Life Sciences) on propofol injection pain. We studied 336 unpremedicated adult patients, who graded pain experienced during induction of anaesthesia with propofol on a 4-point verbal rating scale. Use of the microfilter reduced both the incidence and severity of propofol injection pain (p 〈 0.001). Incidence of severe pain in the filter group was 2.4% compared with 16.6% in the control group. Overall, 33.7% in the filter group experienced pain compared with 62.1% in the control group. A microbiological filter may provide a non-pharmacological alternative to a lidocaine/propofol mixture for reducing injection pain. It would also reduce the risk of any glass and bacterial contamination.

    Notes: In the central nervous system, regeneration of injured axons and sprouting of intact axons are suppressed by myelin-derived molecules that bind to the Nogo receptor (NgR). We used a soluble form of the NgR (sNgR), constructed as an IgG of the human NgR extracellular domain, to manipulate plasticity of uninjured primary afferent and descending monoaminergic projections to the rat spinal cord following dorsal rhizotomy. Rats with quadruple dorsal rhizotomies were treated with intrathecal sNgR or saline, or were left untreated for 2 weeks. Rhizotomy alone resulted in sprouting of serotonergic axons and to a lesser extent, tyrosine-hydroxylase (TH)-expressing axons, while axons expressing dopamine-β-hydroxylase (DβH) were unaffected. Human IgG immunohistochemistry revealed that sNgR infused into the intrathecal space penetrated approximately 300 µm into spinal white and grey matter. Separate axonal populations differed in their responses to intrathecal sNgR: TH-expressing and DβH-expressing axons responded most and least vigorously, respectively. Serotonergic axons were identified by serotonin (5-HT) or serotonin transporter (SERT) immunohistochemistry. Interestingly, a large increase in 5-HT compared to SERT-positive axons density in both saline and sNgR-treated rats indicated that serotonergic axons both sprouted and increased their transmitter content in response to rhizotomy and sNgR treatment. Calcitonin gene-related peptide-positive axons were largely depleted ipsilaterally by rhizotomy, and sNgR increased axon density only in deeper contralateral laminae (III–V). GAP-43 immunohistochemistry revealed a small increase in axon density following dorsal rhizotomy that was further augmented by sNgR treatment. These results reveal a differential effect of myelin antagonism on distinct populations of spinally projecting axons.

    Notes: This paper describes the reclamation of the Merthyr Vale colliery site and shows that the incorporation of coal recovery produced economic, as well as environmental, benefits. The optimum plant throughput for a 2.1 m dia. barrel washer was 120 t/h at an operating density of 1200 kg/m3. Coal and discard qualities were acceptable, and the final landform was suitable for development with few restrictions.

    Notes: Abstract  Objective. To evaluate MR imaging and pathology findings in order to define the characteristic features of clear cell sarcoma of the soft tissues (malignant melanoma of the soft parts). Design and patients. MR examinations of 21 patients with histologically proven clear cell sarcoma of the musculoskeletal system were retrospectively reviewed and assessed for shape, homogeneity, delineation, signal intensities on T1- and T2-weighted images, contrast enhancement, relationship with adjacent fascia or tendon, secondary bone involvement, and intratumoral necrosis. In 19 cases the pathology findings were available for review and for a comparative MR-pathology study. Results. On T1-weighted images, lesions were isointense (n=3), hypointense (n=7) or slightly hyperintense to muscle (n=11). Immunohistochemical examination was performed in 17 patients. All 17 specimens showed positivity for HMB-45 antibody. In nine of 11 lesions with slightly increased signal intensity on T1-weighted images, a correlative MR imaging-pathology study was possible. All nine were positive to HMB-45 antibody. Conclusions. Clear cell sarcoma of the musculoskeletal system often has a benign-looking appearance on MR images. In up to 52% of patients, this lesion with melanocytic differentiation has slightly increased signal intensity on T1-weighted images compared with muscle. As the presence of this relative higher signal intensity on T1-weighted images is rather specific for tumors displaying melanocytic differentiation, radiologists should familiarize themselves with this rare entity and include it in their differential diagnosis when confronted with a well-defined, homogeneous, strongly enhancing mass with slightly higher signal intensity compared with muscle on native T1-weighted images.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical performance of an experimental flat-panel digital X-ray detector plate (FDXD), and to assess its clinical potential in radiographic and fluoroscopic mode. The efficiency of the detector was assessed by calculating the low-frequency detective quantum efficiency (DQE(0)), and a measure of image quality was obtained using a threshold contrast detail detectability (TCDD) test object. A range of clinical examinations were also carried out, and the results reviewed by members of the radiology staff. The DQE(0) of the system was calculated to be almost 75 %, compared with a value of approximately 20 % for modern computed radiography equipment, offering the potential for increased image quality or significant dose reduction. Measurements using the TCDD test object demonstrated a corresponding advantage for the FDXD in image quality and dose efficiency. Clinical studies are producing radiographic results which are at least the equal of the best currently available digital technology, and a limited number of examinations using fluoroscopic mode at 25 frames per second have been equally encouraging. Equipment using FDXD technology could potentially fulfill all the radiographic and fluoroscopic requirements of the digital department, with improved image quality and dose efficiency.
