Abstract:
The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE),an international research effort aimed at understanding the role of ocean circulation in climate, recently completed its first observational phase. The second phase, which began in late 1997, is dedicated to analysis, interpretation, modeling, and synthesis (AIMS) of the different data sets into a coherent whole. A description of the objectives of AIMS is given in WOCE IPO Report 153 [ WOCE , 1997] .While WOCE's position as a component of the World Climate Research Programme will end formally in 2002, the AIMS phase will certainly continue beyond that date.
