    Notes: Abstract Ultrastructure of cutaneous glands is described in the Australian hylid Litoria caerulea. Three main types of glands could be distinguished in both ventral and dorsal skin: mucous, serous or granular, and lipid glands. Both mucous, and to some extent, serous glands show a PAS-positive reaction. Some of the granular-serous glands react to lipid staining. In addition, a very large gland confined to the dorsal skin of the head reacts to lipid staining. Apparently more than one type of dermal gland is involved in lipid secretion. The subject of skin lipid secretion is discussed in relation to the ecophysiological adaptations of this xeric-inhabiting frog.

    Notes: Abstract. Silica inhalation predisposes workers to bacterial infection and impairments in pulmonary defense function. In this study, we evaluated the effect of pre-exposure to silica on lung defense mechanisms by use of a rat pulmonary Listeria monocytogenes infection model. Male Fischer 344 rats were exposed by inhalation to filtered air or silica (15 mg/m3× 6 h/day × 5 days/wk). After 21 or 59 days of silica exposure, the rats were inoculated intratracheally with 5 × 103 L. monocytogenes. At 0 (noninfected controls), 3, and 7 days after infection, the left lungs were removed, homogenized, and the number of viable L. monocytogenes was counted after an overnight culture at 37° C. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was performed on the right lungs. Alveolar macrophages (AM) were collected, and the AM production of chemiluminescence (CL), an index of reactive oxygen species generation, was measured. The number of lavagable neutrophils (PMNs) and acellular BAL lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity were determined as indices of inflammation and injury, respectively. Pre-exposure to silica for 59 days caused substantial increases in PMN number and LDH activity compared with the air controls, whereas silica inhalation for both 21 and 59 days significantly enhanced the pulmonary clearance of L. monocytogenes compared with air controls. Dramatic elevations were also observed in zymosan- and phorbol myristate acetate (PMA)–stimulated CL production by lung phagocytes recovered from rats pre-exposed to silica for 59 days. These results demonstrate that short-term exposure to inhaled silica particles activates lung phagocytes, as evidenced by increases in reactive oxygen species. This up-regulation in the production of antimicrobial oxidants is likely responsible for the enhancement in pulmonary clearance of L. monocytogenes observed with short-term silica inhalation.

    Notes: Abstract  Males of the quacking frog Crinia georgiana produce calls consisting of 1–11 notes. Playback experiments using synthetic calls showed that males tend to match the number of notes in 2-note and 4-note stimuli; however, males tended to produce more than 1 note in response to a 1-note stimulus and fewer than 8 notes in response to an 8-note stimulus. Successive playbacks of two, 4-note calls from separate speakers indicate that males are likely to match the combined number of notes in the calls of two neighbors, even if they are not equidistant from the focal male. The results are compared with the few other studies of matching in anurans, and interpreted in terms of hypotheses developed to explain matching in songbirds. One attractive and testable hypothesis for call matching in C. georgiana is that males are attempting to produce calls that are at least as attractive to females as those of rivals, without wasting energy.

    Notes: Abstract A photographic survey in 1998 of the seabed along depth transects from 700 to 1300 m across the N.E. Atlantic continental slope off north-west Scotland shows clear depth-related change in sediment type and megabenthic community in an environment where biological communities and species distributions are poorly known. Small-scale features, such as trawl marks and dense fields of xenophyophores, were resolved that may have remained unknown using conventional sampling or lower resolution imaging techniques. Because xenophyophores accumulate barite, a constituent of some drilling muds, their local-scale occurrences will be important to baseline environmental survey prior to hydrocarbon prospecting in deep water. Our results indicate that deep-sea trawling is physically impacting the seabed to depths of more than 1000 m. The persistence and biological consequence of this impact is unknown, but may depend on sediment type and natural physical disturbance. Comparison with similar seabed photographs taken from a neighbouring area in 1988, which show a high incidence of trawl marks, indicates that such impacts have been taking place over at least 10 years.
