Abstract: Three complexes, [M(CO) 5 Tz], have been synthesised by the photochemical reaction of 3,5-dimethyl-1,2,4-triazole (Tz) with [M(CO) 6 ] (M = Cr, Mo and W). The crystal structure of [Cr(CO) 5 Tz] has been characterised by X-ray analysis, and the 4 H-tautomer of the triazole ligand is observed in this complex in the solid state.

Abstract: This paper reports the characterisation methods used in evaluating the chemical changes in glass fibre/epoxy prepregs during storage in an environment chamber. The specimens were exposed to an environment with a relative humidity of 50% at 25°C for up to 196 days. Various physicochemical analysis methods were used to determine the extent of the changes to the prepregs during storage. These methods include infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermal analysis (TA) and other chemical methods to measure the volatile and insoluble components content. During storage, the chemical reaction occurs between some epoxide groups, which is known as precuring. Results indicate that precuring in the epoxy resin system consumed a considerable number of epoxide groups during the exposure. The epoxide index obtained from IR analysis gives a straight measure of the number of epoxide groups remaining in the prepregs at different stages of the storage. A parameter known as the “precured degree”, defined from the epoxide index, can be used to measure the prepregs’ quality. A set of laminates made from prepregs that had been degraded to different degrees were subjected to flexural and tensile testing. The flexural and tensile properties were significantly reduced as a consequence of the increase in the precured degree for the prepregs. The results show that it is important to control the precuring reaction in epoxy-based prepregs during storage before they are transferred into composite products.

Abstract: The prominence of diffusion in auditorium acoustics is commonly acknowledged in the literature, but neither objective measure nor subjective description indicates how it should be defined. Since we know the early sound plays an important part in the subjective success of a concert hall, several acoustical parameters for acoustical design such as EDT, t I , C 80 , G 80 , LF E , IACC E , etc. were developed in relation to the early reflections. A sound field composed of a few discrete reflections is of course non-diffuse even in a hall with plenty of surface diffusers. These diffusers may be relevant to the late reverberant sound field, which contributes to the acoustical quality of a hall and will be considered as dependent on the degree of diffusion. Compared with RT 60 , EDT is a better indication of perceived reverberance, and the quality of reverberant sound may not be that significant to the hall acoustics. Although the early studies of spatial impression focused on the importance of reverberant sound, recent investigations reveal that late-arriving sound from the side of the listener is more important for creating a strong sense of listener envelopment (LEV). Hence the question is: “Is diffusion over-emphasized?” After an overview on this subject, the author suggests several issues to be clarified through further investigations.

Abstract: In view of the limited data available from the Asian region on the daily intake of nutritionally essential trace elements, a study was taken up, as part of a coordinated research project of the International Atomic Energy Agency, to estimate the daily dietary intake and organ content of some selected trace elements of importance in radiation protection, and also in nutrition. Nine Asian countries—Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Pakistan, Philippines, and Vietnam—which represented more than 50% of the world's population, participated in this study. Analysis of about 700 diet samples was carried out for four minor (calcium, potassium, magnesium, and sodium) and eight trace (chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, iodine, manganese, selenium, and zinc) elements using nuclear and other sensitive analytical methods employing neutron activation analysis (NAA), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) techniques. These samples consisted of the total cooked diet, market basket, duplicate diets, and 225 staple foods. Emphasis was placed on the quality assurance and harmonization of the sampling techniques to ensure quality data. Significant inter- and intra-country variations in daily dietary intake of various trace elements were observed. The maximum inter-country variation was observed for iodine intake (factor of more than 45), being highest for Japan and lowest for Pakistan. For iron, an important trace element, the variation between the intakes was by a factor of four being lowest for Vietnam and highest for Pakistan.

Abstract: Genes that modulate the action of hormones and cytokines play a critical role in stress response, survival, and in growth and differentiation of cells. Many of these biological response modifiers are responsible for various pathological conditions, including inflammation, infection, cachexia, aging, genetic disorders, and cancer. We have previously identified a new gene, BRE, that is responsive to DNA damage and retinoic acid. Using multiple-tissue dot-blotting and Northern blotting, BRE was recently found to be strongly expressed in adrenal cortex and medulla, in testis, and in pancreas, whereas low expression was found in the thyroid, thymus, small intestine and stomach. In situ hybridization and immunohistochemical staining indicated that BRE was strongly expressed in the zona glomerulosa of the adrenal cortex, which synthesizes and secretes the mineralocorticoid hormones. It is also highly expressed in the glial and neuronal cells of the brain and in the round spermatids, Sertoli cells, and Ledig cells of the testis, all of which are associated with steroid hormones and/or TNF synthesis. However, BRE expression was downregulated in human adrenal adenoma and pheochromocytoma, whereas its expression was enhanced in abnormal adrenal tissues of rats chronically treated with nitrate or nitrite. These data, taken together, indicate that the expression of BRE is apparently associated with steroids and/or TNF production and the regulation of endocrine functions. BRE may play an important role in the endocrine and immune system, such as the cytokine–endocrine interaction of the adrenal gland.

Abstract: The acute and accumulated toxicity of the rare earth borotungstate heteropoly blues, HPB-2, Ce 2 H 3 [BW 9 VI W 2 V Mn(H 2 O)O 39 ]·.12H 2 O, which is active against influenza virus in Kunming mice, were investigated in Kunming mice following oral and intraperitoneal administration. The activity of HPB-2 against influenza virus (FM1) in the mice was then investigated. HPB-2, given either orally (p.o.) or intraperitoneally (i.p.), was shown to have activity. HPB-2 was shown to be more effective than the positive control, ribavirin, and it was also found that i.p. administration was more effective than p.o. administration.
