Abstract: We investigated the phenotypic features of cardiomyocytes, including the gap junctions, in the myocardial sleeve of thoracic veins. Single cardiomyocytes, isolated from the canine pulmonary veins (PV) and superior vena cava (SVC) using digestive enzymes, were examined by immunoconfocal microscopy using antisera against connexin43 (Cx43), Cx40, and other cell markers. The results showed that isolated cardiomyocytes displayed rod shapes of various sizes, ranging from 〈 50 μm to 〉 200 μm in length, and all the cells expressed α-actinin and vinculin. Gap junctions made of various amounts of Cx43 and Cx40 were found at the cell borders. These two connexins were extensively co-localized. Comparison between the thoracic veins showed that cells of the SVC contained more Cx43 gap junctions (total Cx43 gap junctions area per cell surface area, 4.0 ± 0.2% vs 1.5 ± 0.2%; p 〈 0.01). In addition, for single-nucleus cells, those from the PV were longer (103.7 ± 3.6 vs 85.0 ± 3.1 μm; p 〈 0.01) but narrower (14.4 ± 0.5 vs 16.9 ± 0.9 μm; p 〈 0.01). In conclusion, canine thoracic veins contain cardiomyocytes with differences in shape and gap junctions, suggesting that the electrical conduction properties may be different between the thoracic veins.

Abstract: From 1989 to 1996, we treated 18 cases (10 males, eight females; average age 48.2 years) of failed ankle arthrodesis by revision of ankle arthrodesis and followed their progress for at least two years. The average time interval between original surgery and revision was 17.3 months. Revisions were needed due to infection in one case, nonunion in 10 cases, and malalignment in seven cases. The salvage operations included debridement in the infected case, refreshed pseudoarthrosis in nonunion cases, and corrective osteotomy in malalignment cases. Sixteen cases were fixed by crossed screws with internal compression, one infected case was fixed by an external fixator, and one case with bone loss was fixed with buttress plate. The average follow-up period was 40.4 months. There was one nonunion and two delayed unions, with an ultimate fusion rate of 94%. The average AOFAS ankle-hindfoot score was 70.9 at final follow up. There was one excellent result (5.6%), five good results (27.8%), 11 fair results (61%), and one poor result (5.6%), and the overall results were poorer compared with our series of primary arthrodesis. The time to fusion also took longer in the revision cases (average 2.7 months in primary cases and 4.8 months in revision cases). Fusion techniques that ensure solid union in a functional position are essential. If an ankle arthrodesis fails, however, revision is a salvage procedure that can achieve an acceptable result.

Abstract: In this study, we use dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea to treat cotton fabrics with various processes by changing the bath concentrations. We find that dry and wet crease recovery angles of the fabrics treated with the pad-dry-high-pressure-steam (HPS) cure process are higher than those for other processes at a given tensile strength retention. Crosslinking length and dry and wet crease recovery angles of the fabrics finished with the pad-dry-HPS-cure process are higher than those for the pad-dry-cure process for a given number of crosslinks per anhydroglucose unit. Additionally, the surface distribution of the crosslinking agent on the fabrics finished with the pad-dry-HPS-cure process is more significant than that for the pad-dry-cure process.

Abstract: We have reviewed a single surgeon's experience with isolated talonavicular fusion in 16 patients with talonavicular arthritis. Fixation was either by staples or screws. Fifteen solid unions were achieved in the 16 patients who were followed (mean: 51 months). The average Ankle-Hindfoot Scale improved from 77.2 preoperatively to 92.9 postoperatively (p 〈 0.001). Subjectively, 15 patients were satisfied and one patient dissatisfied with the results. Further osteoarthritis in the adjacent joints was noted in five patients. We concluded that isolated talonavicular fusion is an effective method of treatment of talonavicular arthritis regarding pain relief and functional improvement. Though osteoarthritis was found in some adjacent joints postoperatively, the results were still satisfactory.

Abstract: The aetiology of primary cough headache (PCH) is obscure. The aim of this study was to investigate the magnetic resonance (MR) morphometric characteristics of the posterior cranial fossa (PCF) in patients with PCH. Eighteen consecutive patients with PCH (14M/4F, mean age 75.1 + 6.0 years) and 18 sex- and age-matched control subjects were recruited for study. Based on the midline sagittal MR images, parameters indicating posterior fossa crowdedness were measured. Compared with controls, patients with PCH had a similar size of hindbrain tissue area but a significantly smaller PCF area, resulting in a higher mean hindbrain/PCF ratio (0.78 + 0.04 vs. 0.73 + 0.06, P = 0.005). In addition, these patients also had a lower position of the cerebellar tonsillar tip, a shorter clivus length and shorter distances from the clivus to the mid-pons and from the basion to the medulla than the control group. Patients with PCH were associated with a more crowded PCF, which might be a contributing factor for the pathogenesis of this headache syndrome.

    Abstract: Two novel copper complexes with formulae [Cu{HC(pz) 3 }(SCN) 2 ] 1 and [Cu(tacn)(SCN) 2 ] 2 have been obtained by the reaction of HC(pz) 3 and tacn with a copper salt and thiocyanate. The complex 1 crystallises in the orthorhombic space group A ba2 , with lattice parameters a = 25.7715(7) Å, b = 7.5034(3) Å, c = 16.2328(6) Å, Z = 8, R 1 = 0.0613, wR 2 = 0.1353. The complex 2 crystallises in the orthorhombic space group P 2(1)2(1)2(1) , with lattice parameters a = 8.640(4) Å, b = 10.890(5) Å, c = 13.833(6) Å, Z = 4, R 1 = 0.0343, wR 2 = 0.0679. Both complexes are isostructural mononuclear compounds. The central copper ions of 1 and 2 are coordinated by three nitrogen atoms of the ligands and two nitrogen atoms of the two thiocyanate ions. Depending on the ligands, the two complexes forms different weak bonds resulting in different crystal packing.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to compare quality of life (QOL) between peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients with adequate and inadequate total solute clearance (TSC). We also tried to determine the relationship between QOL and TSC. Design A cross-sectional study design was used in which QOL was evaluated and compared between PD patients with adequate and inadequate TSC. Setting The PD unit of a university teaching hospital. Patients Sixty-seven patients were recruited, 38 on continuous ambulatory PD and 29 on continuous cycler-assisted PD. Methods Patients were divided into adequate and inadequate groups, based on the results of either total urea clearance (Kt/V urea ) or total creatinine clearance (weekly CCr). The demographic data, dialysis variables, and clinical parameters of these patients were all collected. QOL was evaluated using the SF-36 questionnaire, which contains eight domains and is a comprehensive and validated instrument for QOL evaluation. QOL of patients in adequate and inadequate groups was compared. The relationship between QOL and TSC was also examined. Results Among patients grouped by Kt/V urea , patients in the adequate group had significantly higher scores in two domains of the SF-36, that is, physical and emotional role functioning, than did those in the inadequate group. The total SF-36 scores were positively correlated with Kt/V urea when all patients were pooled together. However, among patients grouped by weekly CCr, there was no significant difference in any of the eight domains of the SF-36 between patients in the adequate and inadequate groups. No correlation was found between the total SF-36 scores and weekly CCr. Conclusion Our study had two important findings: First, PD patients with adequate total solute clearance, based on Kt/V urea and not on weekly CCr, had a better QOL. Second, Kt/V urea is better correlated with QOL than weekly CCr. These findings suggest that Kt/V urea is a better parameter for the clinical evaluation of total solute clearance from the viewpoint of QOL.

Abstract: We have used three different processes to treat cotton fabrics with different combined weight ratios of dimethylolethyleneurea (DMEU) and dimethylol-N,N'-dimethylene-tris ethyleneurea (DMDME3EU) as crosslinking agents, and have found that a two-step process of pad(DMDME3EU)-dry-cure-pad(DMEU)-dry-cure yields higher dry crease recovery angles (DCRA), wet crease recovery angles (WCRA), and equilibrium direct dye adsorption values than the other two processes of pad(DMEU)-dry-cure-pad(DMDME3EU)-dry-cure and pad- (mixture of DMEU and DMDME3EU)-dry-cure at the same nitrogen content and a combined ratio of equal concentrations of the two agents. The process of pad(DMDME3EU)-dry-cure- pad(DMEU)-dry-cure also yields higher DCRA values for a given wet crease recovery angle and tensile strength retention and an even crosslinking agent distribution in/on the treated fabrics. At the same time, the DCRA and WCRA values for the pad(DMDME3EU)-dry-cure- pad(DMEU)-dry-cure process are higher than those for the other two processes at a given number of crosslinks per anhydroglucose unit.

Abstract: Two kinds of alpha-amino acids are used to combine with dimethylol-dihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDHEU) as crosslinking agents, and the specific rate constants and other activation parameters are discussed. From the results, we find that the rate constants for the various crosslinking agent systems are in the order of DMDHEU 〉 DMDHEU-aspartic acid 〉 DMDHEU-glutamic acid. The energies needed to crosslink are in the rank of DMDHEU-glutamic acid 〉 DMDHEU-aspartic acid 〉 DMDHEU. The values of enthalpy and entropy for DMDHEU are lower than those for DMDHEU-alpha-amino acids, and enthalpy values for DMDHEU are significantly lower than those for DMDHEU-alpha-amino acids. The data of various activation parameters reveal that the reaction state of DMDHEU-alpha-amino acids is different from that of DMDHEU. Additionally, the reactions between aluminum sulfate and aspartic acid are confirmed by infrared spectra.
