Abstract: We report a case of ring-enhanced malignant meningioma mimicking a solitary brain metastasis in a patient with renal cell carcinoma. This misleading situation is rarely encountered and has not been documented previously. Considering the low incidence of brain metastases from a renal cell carcinoma staged T 〈 sub 〉 1–2 〈 /sub 〉 without systemic metastases, a clinical diagnosis requires circumspection, and both primary and metastatic tumors should be considered when a solitary brain lesion is encountered.

Abstract: Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) is a potent secreted signaling factor which functions in multiple stages of angiogenesis. In the present study, we examined the role of CTGF in tumor angiogenesis and made the following observations: (1) Histological analysis of human breast cancer (MDA231) cell and human fibrosarcoma (HT1080) cell xenografts in BALB/c nude mice showed a high level of neovascularization. Human squamous cell carcinoma (A431) xenografts induced only a low level of neovascularization. (2) CTGF mRNA was strongly expressed in MDA231 and in HT1080 cells in vivo and in vitro, but not in A431 cells. (3) CTGF protein was markedly produced in MDA231 cells and HT1080 cells and secreted into culture medium, and its production was greater during phases of growth rather than confluency. (4) Production of CTGF in bovine aorta endothelial cells was induced by CTGF, VEGF, bFGF and TGF-β. (5) Neovascularization induced by HT1080 cells or MDA231 cells on chicken chorioallantoic membrane was suppressed in the presence of neutralizing CTGF-specific polyclonal antibody. These results suggest that CTGF regulates progression in tumor angiogenesis and the release or secretion of CTGF from tumor cells is essential for the angiogenesis.

Abstract: 〈 i 〉 Background/Aims: 〈 /i 〉 Cytokines and adhesion molecules regulate many inflammatory processes in several gastrointestinal diseases. The dynamics of cytokines and adhesion molecules in reflux esophagitis are unknown in detail. We examined the expression and dynamics of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), macrophage inflammatory protein-1α (MIP-1α), MIP-2, GRO/cytokine-induced neutrophil chemoattractant-2α (CINC-2α), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), leukocyte function-associated antigen 1 (LFA-1; CD11a/CD18), and Mac-1 (CD11b/CD18) in rat chronic reflux esophagitis. 〈 i 〉 Methods: 〈 /i 〉 Chronic acid reflux esophagitis was induced in Wistar rats by ligating the transitional region between the forestomach and the glandular portion and wrapping the duodenum near the pylorus with a small piece of an 18-Fr Nélaton catheter. Rats were killed 3 or 21 days after operation. The levels of mRNA expression of cytokines and ICAM-1 were determined by real-time quantitative RT-PCR. Localization of adhesion molecules and cytokines was investigated by immunohistochemical staining, and numbers of LFA-1- or Mac-1-positive cells were quantified. 〈 i 〉 Results: 〈 /i 〉 IL-1β, TNF-α, MCP-1, MIP-1α, MIP-2, CINC-2α, and ICAM-1 mRNA expression was significantly increased in esophageal lesions compared with normal esophagus. There were few these cytokines- or adhesion molecule-positive cells in normal esophagus. In regions of esophagitis, numerous inflammatory leukocytes in lamina propria and the submucosal layer exhibited positive reactions for these cytokines and endothelial cells were intensely stained for ICAM-1. Numbers of LFA-1- and Mac-1-positive cells were significantly increased in rat chronic esophagitis. Treatment with rabeprazole almost completely inhibited development of chronic acid reflux esophagitis and significantly decreased expression of cytokines and ICAM-1 mRNA in esophageal tissue compared with control. 〈 i 〉 Conclusion: 〈 /i 〉 Cytokines and adhesion molecules play important roles in the pathogenesis of chronic reflux esophagitis in this rat model.

Abstract: In order to clarify the hypofunction in which brain areas demonstrate a decline in Intelligence Quotient (IQ), we examined correlations between the IQ and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and regional cerebral metabolic rate of glucose (rCMRglc) measured using positron emission tomography (PET) in 26 patients with clinically diagnosed Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The MMSE scores and full-scale IQ (FSIQ) showed significant correlations with the rCMRglc in the temporal and parietal lobes on both sides and in the left frontal lobe, which were significantly reduced in comparison to those in the normal controls. A multiple regression analysis showed only the MMSE score to predict verbal IQ (VIQ), performance IQ (PIQ) and FSIQ. VIQ was also predicted by the rCMRglc in the left parietal lobe, while PIQ was predicted by the age at onset. The results suggested MMSE to be an index of dementia severity reflected by general intelligence as shown by IQ in AD, and a reduction in the VIQ can thus be used as an index of the left parietal dysfunction, which is not expressed by MMSE.
