Notes: Abstract PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of photodynamic therapy in the management of residual neoplasms of the perianal skin. METHODS: This is a retro-spective review. Five patients with pathologic confirmation of residual perianal neoplasms were treated with photodynamic therapy. There were three females. The mean age was 52 (range, 33–79) years. Pathology consisted of Bowen's disease in two patients, squamous-cell carcinoma in two patients, and extramammary Paget's disease in one patient. Four patients received one photodynamic therapy treatment and one patient received two treatments three months apart. RESULTS: Treatment was followed by immediate perianal erythema, subsequent blister formation in 36 to 48 hours, and sloughing of the treated area in 72 hours. With a mean follow-up of 5.2 (range, 1–8) years, there were two recurrences. One recurrence was in a patient four years after treatment for Paget's disease, and the other was in a patient nine months after treatment for Bowen's disease. The latter was managed successfully with wide local excision. Treatment-related toxicities included significant perianal pain in four patients, controlled with analgesia management. CONCLUSIONS: Photodynamic therapy can successfully be used after wide local excision for residual neoplasms of the perianal skin. Treatment can be rendered with acceptable morbidity.

Notes: Abstract Background: Hepatic resection is potentially curative in selected patients with colorectal metastases. It is a widely held practice that multiple colorectal hepatic metastases are not resected, although outcome after removal of four or more metastases is not well defined. Methods: Patients with four or more colorectal hepatic metastases who submitted to resection were identified from a prospective database. Number of metastases was determined by serial sectioning of the gross specimen at the time of resection. Demographic data, tumor characteristics, complications, and survival were analyzed. Results: From August 1985 to September 1998, 155 patients with four or more metastatic tumors (range 4–20) underwent potentially curative resection by extended hepatectomy (39%), lobectomy (42%), or multiple segmental resections (19%). Operative morbidity and mortality were 26% and 1%, respectively. Actuarial 5-year survival was 23% for the entire group (median 5 32 months) and there were 12 actual 5-year survivors. On multivariate analysis, only number of hepatic tumors (P = .005) and the presence of a positive margin (P = .003) were independent predictors of poor survival. Conclusions: Hepatic resection in patients with four or more colorectal metastases can achieve long-term survival although the results are less favorable as the number of tumors increases. Number of hepatic metastases alone should not be used as a sole contraindication to resection, but it is clear that the majority of patients will not be cured after resection of multiple lesions.

Notes: Summary Activated (Ph3P)3RuH2CO (Ru) catalyzed copolymerization of 1,4-bis(5'-acetyl-2'-thienyl)benzene (I) and 1,3-divinyltetramethyldisiloxane (II) yields alt-copoly[3,3,5,5-tetramethyl-4-oxa-3,5-disila-1,7-heptanylene/2',2"-diacetyl-5',5"-(1,4-benzene)-3',3"-bis (thiophenylene)] (III). On the other hand, Ru catalyzed copolymerization of 1,3-bis(5'-acetyl-2'-thienyl)benzene (IV) and II fails. Nevertheless, Ru catalyzed reaction of IV with excess vinylpentamethyldisiloxane (V) yields 1,3-bis(4'-pentamethyldisiloxy-ethyl-5'-acetyl-2'-thienyl)benzene (VI). VI undergoes acid catalyzed siloxane equilibration polymerization to give alt-copoly[3,3,5,5-tetramethyl-4-oxa-3,5-disila-1,7-heptanylene/2',2"-diacetyl-5',5"-(1,3-benzene)-3',3"-bis(thiophenylene)] (VII) and hexamethyldisiloxane. Copolymers III and VII have been characterized.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract. One goal of scenario analysis is to investigate possible future developments. In order to cover almost all alternatives it is desirable to analyze as many different scenarios as possible. On the other hand the complexity of the analysis grows as the number of scenarios increases. This often limits the number of scenarios considered. At this point dynamic fuzzy data analysis can be used. It offers methods to cluster objects (i.e. scenarios) which are represented by trajectories over time, therefore reducing complexity by extracting a small set of typical scenarios out of a large set of possible scenarios. Thereafter these typical scenarios can be interpreted by an expert. This paper describes such a dynamic fuzzy data analysis method and describes how it can be used in scenario analysis.
Notes: Zusammenfassung.

Notes: Abstract The photodegradation processes using semi-conductor like TiO2 as a catalyst, provide new methods for waste water treatment. In this method the step of adsorption of organic compounds on the semi-conductor surface could have a prominent influence. In this work we describe the results of the study of the dicarboxylic acids adsorption on TiO2 (P25) in aqueous phase. The Langmuir model gives a good representation of the adsorption of the studied organic diacids. The maximum adsorption capacities are close to 7.10−5 mol/g for the four studied diacids. The diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (IRFT-DRIFT mode) of loaded TiO2 enables to demonstrate the formation of a dicarboxylate film on the semi-conductor surface.

Notes: Abstract We have used adsorption isotherms to perform a comparative study of the substrate quality of five groups of titanium carbide powder, manufactured following different procedures. The isotherms were measured in an automated setup at 77.3 K using methane and argon as the adsorbates. We determined the specific surface area of each of the powders studied. We also determined whether or not there was evidence of steps (indicative of layer-by-layer adsorption) in each set of adsorption data. The isothermal compressibilities of the adsorbed films were determined from the data measured for each sample. Adsorption measurements were also conducted to determine the effect that heating the powders under vacuum had on the resulting substrate quality.

Notes: Abstract The equation $$Ax = y$$ for a positive linear continuous operator is considered in an ordered normed space $$\left( {X,K,\left\| \cdot \right\|} \right)$$ , where the cone is assumed to be closed and having a nonempty interior. Then the dual cone $$K'$$ of K possesses a base $${\mathcal{F}}$$ . Generalizing the well known maximum principle for positive matrices an operator A is said to satisfy the maximum principle, if for any $$x \in K,\;x \ne 0$$ there exists a positive linear continuous functional $$f \in {\mathcal{F}}$$ which is both, maximal on the element Ax, i.e. $$f\left( {Ax} \right) = \sup _{g \in {\mathcal{F}}} g\left( {Ax} \right)$$ , and positive on the element x, i.e. $$f\left( x \right) 〉0$$ . This property is studied and characterized both analytically by some extreme point condition and geometrically by means of the behaviour under A of the faces of the cone K. It is shown that the conditions which have been obtained for finite dimensional spaces in earlier relevant papers are special cases of conditions presented in this paper. The maximum pinciple is proved for simple operators in the spaces $$C\left[ {0,1} \right]$$ and c.
