Abstract: The authors report a case of a 49-year-old male patient with leiomyosarcoma of the ascending colon. The patient presented with anemia and an abdominal mass, and the symptoms progressed until a final diagnosis was made nine months later. A plain abdominal x-ray showed the presence of gas outside the bowel, in the right hypochondrium. The double contrast barium enema showed a sublevel displacement of the hepatic flexure and diverticula. An abdominal ultrasound revealed a heterogeneous expansive lesion below the liver containing gas, and a computed tomography of the abdomen revealed an excavated mass below the liver containing liquid, that was not filled in by contrast medium. The patient was submitted to a right hemicolectomy with ileocoloanastomosis and the histopathological analysis of the excised material revealed a leiomyosarcoma of the ascending colon.

Abstract: The authors report a pulmonary histoplasmosis outbreak occurring in five children after the cleaning of a deactivated coal furnace. The symptoms were high fever, dry cough, asthenia and anorexia. By the time parents seeked for medical care, only one child remained symptomatic with fever, tachypnea and hepatomegaly. All the patients had similar radiological findings. Chest films showed diffuse, bilateral, reticulonodular infiltrates and lymph node enlargement. Computed tomography showed small nodules with a random distribution and hilar and mediastinal lymph nodes. Diagnosis was confirmed by positive gel immunodiffusion for Histoplasma capsulatum. Only one patient needed to be hospitalized to receive supportive treatment. The use of antifungal agents was not necessary in any of the patients. After 50 days all patients were submitted to computed tomography studies that revealed significant remission of the lesions.

Abstract: Phosphorus is an important mineral nutrient for vegetables. This work was conducted at Universidade Federal da Paraíba, in Areia, Brazil, from December/2001 to July/2002, aiming to evaluate the effect of levels of P2O5 on the yield of lima bean, cv. "Orelha de Vó". The experimental design was a randomized block with five treatments (0; 100; 200; 300; 400 and 500 kg ha-1 of P2 O5), and four replications. Each plot consisted of 40 plants spaced 1.0 m between rows and 0.50 m between plants in each row. The estimated maximum yield of green and dry beans (5.2 and 2.7 t ha-1, respectively) corresponded, to the dosages of 309 and 302 kg ha-1 of P2O5. The levels 291 kg ha-1 and 281 kg ha-1 of P2O5 provided, respectively, the greater economic return for the yield of green (4.1 t ha-1) and dry (1.8 t ha-1) beans. The most economic levels included more than 80% of those dosages responsible for the maximum yields and indicated the economic viability of phosphorus utilization on lima bean crop. The P2O5 levels which promoted the maximum yield and the maximum economic return for green and dry beans yield were respectively, with 57.1; 56.3; 55.0 and 53.8 mg dm-3 of available P for the extractor of Melich 1. The lima bean response to the phosphorus fertilization in soils with similar fertility used in the present study, for green and dry beans yield, will be reduced at levels of available P superior to 55.0 and 53.8 mg dm-3. The average concentration of P in the leaves of lima bean, 120 days after sowing, in function of levels of P2O5 was of 3.4 g kg-1. For the soil of this study the application of 291 and 281 kg ha-1 of P2O5 is more recommended to establish the lima bean respectively, for green and dry beans yield.

Abstract: The authors describe a case of pulmonary nocardiosis in a 37-year-old man with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in treatment with antiretroviral drugs. Clinical symptoms were productive cough, hemoptysis and progressive weight loss. A chest x-ray film showed a right upper lobe consolidation while the computed tomography demonstrated consolidation and areas of cavitation. The radiologic findings were unspecific. Consequently, a bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage was performed, revealing filamentous Gram-positive bacteria (Nocardia sp). Treatment with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole resulted in complete remission of the respiratory symptoms. The authors review the literature and discuss the main radiological features of this disease.

Abstract: Pulmonary cryptococcosis is caused by Cryptococcus neoformans, a world-wide distribution unimorphic fungus that exhibits the same form in its natural habitat, animals and humans. The disease presents variable clinical and pathologic features and occurs in immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients. We reviewed the computed tomography findings of 14 patients with confirmed pulmonary cryptococcosis. The most frequent computed tomography findings were masses and pulmonary nodules. Other abnormalities included cavities, areas of consolidation, peribronchovascular interstitial thickening and diffuse linear opacities. Pulmonary masses were the most frequent findings (64.2%), followed by nodules (35.7%) whereas diffuse pulmonary disease accounted for 14.2% of the cases. The most affected areas were the upper lobes and the anterior regions. Computed tomography scan of the chest allows a precise assessment of pulmonary parenchymal involvement in patients with pulmonary cryptococcosis.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To investigate the adequacy of the content and format of the patient information section in package inserts of commonly prescribed drugs at the internal medicine service of a school hospital. METHODS: Forty eight package inserts were collected from six pharmacies of the city of Porto Alegre in June 1998. The presence of mandatory notification and other information required by Brazilian laws that regulate inserts content was examined. RESULTS: No one package inserts contained all the notification required by law. Warnings about medication storage and expiration date were the most frequently information found in package inserts analyzed. CONCLUSION: Important information for the drug user was not presented in package inserts analyzed, limiting the purpose of inserts as an instrument for patient education.

Abstract: Potato tubers exposed to low temperature increase the reducing sugar content, that during the frying process causes the darkening of the product, losing its commercial value. The non-structural carbohydrates content of two potato cultivars (Perola and Atlantic) stored at two temperature conditions was evaluated. Tubers were produced at Embrapa Clima Temperado, Pelotas, (Brazil), in autumn and spring crops of 1999. Immediately after harvest, the tubers were divided in two lots, standardized as regards to the size and stored under room temperature (21±3ºC for autumn production; 24±2ºC for spring production) and cold storage (2±1ºC) for 40 days. Samples of two regions of the tubers (central and peripheral) were collected from the two storage conditions, at a ten-day interval, starting on the storage day of the tubers (time zero) during 40 days. In each sampling, the starch, sucrose, total soluble carbohydrates and reducing sugar content were evaluated. The starch content was not affected by storage temperature, while the other carbohydrates showed a rise in the cold stored tubers, mainly between 10 and 20 days. However, the changes due to low temperatures differed with genotype, crop season and region of the tuber.
