Abstract:
Despite appearances, library history research in Germany is narrowly based, though extremely active. The major German bibliographical work in this field, known as BBB, is actually a one-man operation, while library schools which concern themselves with history have all but disappeared (with the exception of Stuttgart). But research into all aspects of library history has been flourishing due to the activities of the Wolfenbutteler Arbeitskreis fur Bibliotheks-, Buch- und Mediengeschichte, which has sponsored a large programme of meetings and publications. This paper was presented at a seminar on the state of library history research, held at the Library of Congress in October 2000.
