    Notes: A new loading dilatometer was successfully developed and applied for hot forging experiments, assisted by two high-resolution laser beams and providing accurate determination of radial and axial strains. The application of various uniaxial loads linearly increased both radial and axial strain rates of cylindrical specimens if compared at constant density. Microstructural evolution during hot forging was followed with high-resolution scanning electron microscopy and quantitative analysis of pore size and orientation. Uniaxial loads led to elongated pores oriented in the direction of the applied load. This anisotropic microstructure exhibited an increased densification rate perpendicular to the loading axis, if free sintering was characterized after load removal. The imprinted anisotropy faded out during free sintering.

    Notes: An evaluation of measurements of crack opening displacements (CODs) on a commercial sintered reaction-bonded silicon nitride (SRBSN) was performed. To determine the intrinsic fracture toughness of this material, a new evaluation method is presented, which takes into account not only the near tip CODs, but the CODs of the complete crack profile. The method is applied on through-thickness cracks in bend bars and contrasted to CODs of Vickers radial cracks. A crack-tip toughness of ∼1.7 MPa·m1/2 is obtained.

    Notes: Composites with microstructures of interpenetrating networks were manufactured by gas pressure infiltration of Ni3Al into porous preforms of aluminum oxide. Composites with Ni3Al contents of between 15% and 30% by volume were made and evaluated mechanically at temperatures between room temperature and 1000°C. The fracture strength, the fracture toughness, Young's modulus, and the thermal expansion coefficient were measured for each composite and test condition and were correlated with the microstructures of the composites. Composites with low Ni3Al contents had strengths below 400 MPa, presumably due to microcracking along the interface between the Ni3Al and the Al2O3. The composite with the highest content of Ni3Al, 30 vol%, had a mean fracture strength of 675 ± 16 MPa, a Weibull modulus of 23.9, and a room-temperature toughness of 9.2 ± 0.5 MPa·m1/2.

    Notes: This work describes the measurement of R-curve behavior in ferroelectric ceramics using four-point bend specimens with controlled semielliptical surface cracks. The results are compared for two compositions of lead lanthanum zirconate titanate. One exhibits ferroelastic behavior, the other electrostrictive linear elastic behavior. R-curves are measured in the crack length regime of 0.1 to 0.8 mm. The ferroelastic composition displays a toughness increase from 0.5 to 1.2 MPa·m1/2. The linear elastic composition displays a flat R-curve. The R-curve behavior is attributed to ferroelastic toughening.

    Notes: R-curves of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) have been measured with compact tension (CT) specimens for different poling conditions and grain sizes. Depending on poling direction the plateau value of the R-curves ranged from 1.13 to 1.54 MPa·m1/2 for a grain size of 6.4 μm and from 1.14 to 1.30 MPa·m1/2 for a grain size of 5.2 μm. Poling in the thickness direction yielded the material with the highest fracture toughness while the direction parallel to the loading direction led to the lowest fracture toughness.

    Notes: The single-edge V-notched-beam fracture testing method was used to measure the short-crack R-curve behavior of a 90-vol%-alumina–10-vol%-ceria-doped zirconia multilayered composite. The initiation and extension of short cracks from the V-notch tip were observed in situ via optical microscopy. Initial crack lengths of 15–50 μm were obtained repeatedly. The resulting R-curve was similar to the R-curve that was measured using the surface-crack-in-flexure testing method. The ability to control the position of the V-notch tip within a material permits study of the influence of specific microscopic features on the fracture behavior.

    Notes: The sintering of thin, nanocrystalline TiO2 films either 140 or 65 nm thick is characterized and compared with the sintering of bulk material. Grain size, pore size distribution, and density data are obtained. Observation of the microstructural evolution during sintering suggests that grain growth, as well as pore growth, at low density can be attributed to differential sintering. A continuum mechanical model for the intermediate stage is useful until the grain size becomes one-half the film thickness. From then on, the ratio of grain size to film thickness affects the degree by which both densification and grain growth decrease, as compared with the continuum computation results.

    Notes: Fracture toughness and fracture strength data are presented for the first time for monoclinic zirconia. An undoped nanocrystalline zirconia powder was sintered at 1100°C and yielded a theoretical density of more than 90% with a grain size of about 150 nm. The surface crack in flexure (SCF) technique was deemed most suitable for nanocrystalline materials. Measurements of Young's modulus and the determination of the fracture origin are also provided.

    Notes: Crack–opening displacement (COD) measurements were performed on a commercial lead zirconate titanate (PZT). The intrinsic fracture toughness (or crack–tip toughness) of this material was determined using a new evaluation procedure, which takes into account the near–tip CODs and complete crack profile CODs. The crack–tip toughness KI0 was determined from an extrapolation of COD data obtained at various loading stages, thus avoiding the complications caused by subcritical crack growth in PZT. Results for plane strain and plane stress condition are presented.

    Notes: The single-edge V-notched-beam (SEVNB) testing geometry was used to measure the crack growth resistance (R-curve) behavior of multilayered alumina–zirconia composites. Fracture mechanics weight function analysis was applied to predict the R-curve behavior of multilayered composites having a stepwise change in composition. These results were then used to differentiate the influence of residual stresses from crack-bridging stresses on the measured R-curve behavior.
