Notes: An investigation of electrical, magnetic, and microwave properties is presented for Nd1−xSrxMnO3−y (NSMO) thin films. The NSMO thin films were deposited on (100)-oriented LaAlO3 substrates using both high-pressure sputtering and laser-ablation methods. Several films with different doping concentration ranging from 0.17 to 0.33 were tested for microwave loss and their frequency dependence on the dc magnetic field. The films exhibited Curie temperatures ranging from 220 to 60 K, and saturation magnetization from 0.3 to 0.1 T. The feasibility of applications of magnetic perovskites for magnetic tuning of resonators is analyzed and discussed. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary A theoretical analysis is made of the flow of a Cosserat fluid in a curved pipe under a pressure gradient. It is assumed that the curvature of the pipe is small, that is the radius of the circle in which the central line of the pipe is coiled is large in comparison with the radius of the cross-section. Following Dean [2] a solution is developed by the method of successive approximation. The paths of the particles in the central plane and the projection of the streamlines on the cross-section of the pipe are compared with those of a Newtonian fluid. It is observed that in the theory of Cosserat fluids the curvature of the streamlines in the central plane increases and the motion is slower in the cross-section of the pipe. It is also shown that the rate of flow of a Cosserat fluid through a curved pipe is decreased due to the curvature of the pipe.

Notes: Summary Nine lyophilized, five frozen, and one fresh BCG preparation from various sources were tested for their activity as adjuvants of systemic immunity in mice. Using three tests, the IgM response to sheep red blood cells, immunoprophylaxis of L1210 leukemia, and immunoprophylaxis of Lewis tumor, results consistent with both immunostimulation and immunodepression were observed, varying as a function of the BCG strain, its storage conditions, and the assay used. Only fresh Pasteur strain BCG was effective in all three tests; its activity was modified by lyophilization and by freezing. Possible reasons for the superiority of fresh Pasteur BCG as an adjuvant are discussed.

Notes: A method of calculation of the correlation energy is proposed, which includes the superposition of configurations and the two particle approach. This method is based on the density matrix formalism. The approximate, but N-representable expressions for the reduced density matrices are used. The correlation energy of the beryllium atom is calculated as an example.

Notes: Viscose rayon fibers modified with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were dyed with some direct and reactive dyes. Exhaustion rate of the dye onto fibers was governed by the amount and nature of the polymer grafted. In general, the dye affinity for cellulose and dye exhaustion onto fibers decreased as the graft yield increased. Dye affinity for the PAN-cellulose graft copolymers was greater than that found with PMMA-cellulose graft copolymers. Except in a few cases, the tendency of cellulose graft copolymers of ca. 13% graft to accept direct dyes was more than that of the untreated cellulose, whereas the affinity of reactive dyes for cellulose graft copolymers of up to ca. 43% polymer was more than that of untreated cellulose. The dye fixation, based on the weight of cellulose component, increased as the graft yield increased. The dyeability of cellulose oxidized with ceric ammonium nitrate was also examined. Oxidation of cellulose prior to dyeing reduced the affinity of the dye for cellulose.

Description / Table of Contents: Mass spectra and fragmentation patterns of several substituted 1,1-difluorocyclopropanes have been investigated. Trends in fragmentation probabilities of different difluorocyclopropanes seem to be related qualitatively to well known empirical substituent effects.
