Abstract Fabry-Perot optical filters/modulators, consisting of an InGaAs-GaAs multiple quantum well (MQW) cavity, are shown to accept wider angle of incidence (∼12°) when the cavity index of refraction is compensated by an external electric field via the quantum confined Stark effect. Preliminary experimental data and simulation results on InGaAsP-InP MQW devices operating around 1.55 μn are also discussed. This provides design flexibility over conventional high finesse Fabry-Perot cavities which do not accept an angle of incidence deviation of more than 2-5° from the normal.
