    Notes: We have used the oxide model proposed by Sales, Turner, and Maple to calculate spatial patterns in the oscillatory oxidation of CO over polycrystalline Pt, Pd, and Ir catalysts. Specifically, by introducing CO diffusion, we have studied the dispersion of one-dimensional traveling waves and their linear stability. These results could be tested by experiments which resolve the spatial structure of the catalytic oscillations.

    Notes: The life cycle of Dictyostelium discoideum provides a striking example of the transition from single cell behavior to multicellular cooperativity. In this paper the status of the attempts at making semiquantitative models of the aggregation phase of this cycle is reviewed. Specifically, it is discussed how the propagation of cAMP waves is a typical example of excitable signaling, which is then rendered unstable by coupling to cell chemotaxis. To investigate the streaming pattern that emerges from this clumping instability, we next turn to a new simulation strategy, which couples dynamical cell-like entities ("bions'') to continuum chemical concentration fields. Finally, we discuss two directions for further research: One is the study of the robustness with respect to the variation of system parameters (such as the cell density) exhibited by the biological system, but not by any simple model. The other concerns going beyond the aggregation phase to tackle the three-dimensional problem of slug formation and motion.

    Notes: Interfacial patterns arise due to the dynamical evolution of phase boundaries in physical, chemical and biological systems. Coupled map lattices (CML) offer a useful tool for the simulation of such systems, being able to naturally accommodate the disparate length and time scales inherent in the dynamics of these processes. We illustrate this idea by reviewing work done on applying CML methods to crystal growth and to excitable media.

    Notes: The rise of an infinitely long bubble in a vertical cylindrical tube full of inviscid fluid is studied. It is demonstrated numerically that the rising velocity of the bubble is determined by the surface tension through a solvability mechanism. The numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental ones.

    Notes: We investigate the formation of β-sheet structures in proteins without sequence-dependent side-chain interactions. To accomplish this, we introduce a model which explicitly incorporates both solvation effects and the angular dependence (on the protein backbone) of hydrogen bond formation. The thermodynamics of this model is studied by exploring the density of states for the entire system and the local couplings in a partially folded structure. Our results suggest that solvation dynamics together with the H-bond angular dependence gives rise to a generic cooperativity in this class of systems; this result explains why pathological aggregates involving β-sheet cores can form from many different proteins. Our work provides the foundation for the construction of phenomenological models to investigate topology effects in β-sheet folding and the competition between native folding and nonspecific aggregation. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The Saffman–Taylor family of viscous fingering patterns is generalized to the case of nonsymmetric forcing; this type of forcing would occur if the Hele–Shaw cells were rotated (about the flow axis) in the presence of a gravitational field. At small surface energy, the selected pattern is determined analytically, which, not surprisingly, lacks reflection symmetry about the middle of the cell. The connection of this problem to that of nonsymmetric dendritic crystal growth is briefly discussed.

    Notes: Abstract We introduce and study a simple lattice statistical mechanics modelfor the clustering of tumor necrosis factor receptor I (TNFR1).Our model explains clustering under over-expression of the cytoplasmicsignal transducer as well as the clustering induced via extracellularligand binding; also we explain why the loss of transducer leads to arapid break-up of the clusters. The basic mechanism at work is a first-order(cooperative) phase transition caused by the multimeric binding capability ofthe receptor-transducer complex. Using cooperativity of this type, the cellsare found to have an enhanced sensitivity and robustness. In general, ourmethod can be applied to other receptor-clustering related signaling system.

    Notes: Prior to morphologic and functional maturation, terminally differentiating hematopoietic cells first exit the cell cycle and undergo growth arrest. Relatively little is known about which molecules regulate differentiation-induced growth arrest. In the present report, we sought to determine whether the mammalian low molecular weight heat shock protein (hsp28) was a candidate growth-regulatory molecule during human hematopoiesis. To this end, hsp28 protein expression was examined during phorbol ester (PMA)-induced macrophage differentiation of the human HL-60 promyelocytic leukemic cell line. Whereas hsp28 was constitutively expressed at relatively low levels in an unphosphorylated state, hsp28 was rapidly phosphorylated within 4 hr following PMA-induced differentiation, preceding increased hsp28 protein levels at 24-48 h. In contrast to other differentiative agents, hsp28 steady state mRNA and protein were regulated concordantly in response to macrophage differentiation. More importantly, these changes were transient, and occurred concomitant with the down-regulation of cellular proliferation and the onset of G1 phase cell cycle arrest. In total, these observations implicate hsp28 as an intermediary in the myelomonocytic differentiative pathway of promyelocytic leukemic cells, and will shed light on the events regulating this process. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
