    Notes: Gold films were deposited on quartz-crystal microbalances by decomposing C7H7F6O2Au (dimethyl gold hexafluoroacetylacetonate) with 2–10-keV Xe+, Kr+, Ar+, Ne+, or He+ ion beams. The number of molecules decomposed per incident ion (i.e., the total decomposition yield) was determined as a function of ion mass and energy. The total decomposition yield increases with increasing ion mass and ion energy, and is approximately proportional to the nuclear stopping power. A binary collision model and a thermal spike model are developed that relate the energy deposited by the ion, at the substrate surface, to the total number of molecules decomposed. Both models predict total decomposition yields that are in reasonable agreement with the experimental measurements; however, the variation of total yield with changes in ion mass and energy are best described by the binary collision model. The success of both models demonstrates that the energy deposited into the substrate surface through the ion-solid interaction is responsible for the decomposition of adsorbed molecules.

    Notes: The role of fine structure in reactions without barriers in the potential-energy surface is examined in general, and calculations are carried out for the specific case of O+OH→H+O2. The long-range Hamiltonian, including electrostatic (dipole–quadrupole and quadrupole–quadrupole) and spin-oribt interactions, is expressed in the asymptotic (separated species) basis for the 18 doubly degenerate states correlating to ground-state reactants O(3P2,1,0)+OH(2Π3/2,1/2). Adiabatic potential-energy surfaces are determined by diagonalization of the long-range Hamiltonian. The adiabaticity of the reaction has been analyzed using general considerations about nonadiabatic processes and confirmed by direct integration of the coupled equations. The half collision through the coupling region is found to be predominantly adiabatic for the state correlating to reaction. Single-surface reaction cross sections and rate constants have been obtained using the adiabatic capture, infinite-order sudden approximation method. Our results indicate that the reaction is probably fast even at very low temperatures. The effect of reagent rotation on the reaction cross section is also discussed.

    Notes: Purpose The purpose of the study was to learn the effect of changes in the articulator settings on the cusp angles during working, nonworking, and protrusive movements; the purpose was also to determine the ability of the coordinate measuring machine to measure the movements.Materials and Methods The condylar angles and the anterior guide angles on a Hanau 96H2 articulator (Teledyne Hanau Corp, Buffalo, NY) were varied; 432 working, nonworking, and protrusive cusp angles were measured at the first molar by a coordinate measuring machine.Results The data from the coordinate measuring machine was used to produce formulas. The formulas were used to calculate the working, nonworking, and protrusive cusp angles that will occur as a result of 72 different articulator settings.Conclusions The coordinate measuring machine is useful for making measurements of articulator movements. Additional research may measure the movements of other articulators or compare articulators (such as the arcon and nonarcon).

    Notes: Optical gain spectra of (GaIn)(NAs)/GaAs quantum-well lasers operating in the 1.3-μm-emission-wavelength regime are measured and compared to those of a commercial (GaIn)(AsP)/InP structure. Good agreement of the experimental results with computed spectra of a microscopic many-body theory is obtained. Due to the contributions of a second confined subband, a spectrally broad gain region is expected for (GaIn)(NAs)/GaAs at elevated carrier densities. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The temperature dependence of the emission of a (GaIn)(NAs)/GaAs vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser is investigated. We find laser emission over an extremely broad temperature range from 30 K up to 388 K. The laser threshold varies from 5 kW/cm2 at 373 K down to a minimum of 1 kW/cm2 at 180 K and increases again to 4 kW/cm2 at 30 K. Picosecond emission dynamics after femtosecond optical excitation is obtained with peak delays below 33 ps and pulse widths below 20 ps over the entire operation range. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Field-collected specimens of three species of Laminaria and three species of subtidal red algae (Delesseria sanguinea, Plocamium cartilagineum and Phyllophora pseudoceranoides) were exposed to natural summer sunlight on Helgoland (southern North Sea) for up to 4 h at 15 °C. Dark-adapted variable fluorescence (Fv : Fm) was measured immediately after these treatments, and following 6, 24 and 48 h of recovery in moderate irradiances of white light. The response of plants to the full spectrum of natural sunlight was compared with that to PAR alone, UV-A + visible, UV-A + UV-B, or UV-A alone. The Fv : Fm values of all species were reduced to minimal values after 4 h in all of these treatments, but those of the more resistant species (Laminaria spp. and P. pseudoceranoides) were higher after shorter exposures to UV radiation alone than to PAR with or without UV. The recovery of Fv : Fm in all species was also more rapid in the two treatments that contained UV radiation alone than in those that included PAR. These results suggest that it is the high irradiances of PAR in natural sunlight which are responsible for the photoinhibition of photosynthesis of subtidal seaweeds and that the current ambient irradiances of UV radiation (either UV-B or UV-A) in northern temperate latitudes would not contribute significantly to this photoinhibition.

    Notes: The age-related decline in plasticity of the brain may be one factor underlying poor functional recovery after stroke. In the present work we tested the hypothesis that the attenuation of neural plasticity in old age could be the result of an altered temporal relationship between factors promoting brain plasticity [microtubule-associated protein 1B (MAP1B)] and neurotoxic factors such as C-terminal βAPP. Focal cerebral ischemia was produced by reversible occlusion of the right middle cerebral artery in 3- and 20-month-old male Sprague-Dawley rats. The functional outcome was assessed in neurobehavioral tests at 3, 7, 14 and 28 days after surgery. At the indicated timepoints, brains were removed and immunostained for C- and N-terminal βAPP and MAP1B. At 2 weeks poststroke, we found an age-related increase in the amount of the C-terminal fragment of βAPP in the peri-infarcted area and the infarct core as well as an early, vigorous incorporation of N-terminal βAPP into the developing astroglial scar. The recovery of the plasticity-associated protein MAP1B following stroke was delayed in both age groups and became prominent between days 14 and 28. As aged rats showed diminished functional recovery compared with young rats, these results suggest that the accumulation of C-terminal βAPP, together with the early incorporation of N-terminal βAPP into the glial scar, may over-ride the beneficial role of plasticity factors such as MAP1B.

    Notes: Objective:  The purpose of this study was to assess periodontal destruction following experimentally induced marginal periodontitis in rats by ligatures over a 60-day observation period. The extent to which the physiological movement of teeth influenced the effect of the ligatures was also examined. In addition, two methods for measuring bone loss in the defleshed jaw were compared.Methods:  Thirty-five male Sprague-Dawley rats (SD) were divided into five groups. Marginal periodontitis was induced by ligatures on the second maxillary molars. Rats were killed after 15, 30, and 60 days. Rats in the control group were killed on day 1 and day 60. Bone loss was determined with two different methods on the buccal and palatinal surfaces of the defleshed jaw. In the first method, the distance of the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) from the alveolar bone crest (ABC) was measured at different sites; in the second method, the area of the exposed root surface of the molars was measured.Results:  Comparison of the control groups from day 1 and day 60 using both measuring methods showed significant differences in bone loss. In the area where the ligature was located, test rats exhibited significantly greater bone loss than control rats. Comparison of control rats from day 1 with test rats from day 15 showed that the increase in bone loss between the groups within the area of the ligature was significantly greater than outside it. The age-dependent bone loss increases over the entire observation period of 60 days. The ligature-induced bone loss increased most from day 1 to day 15; on days 30 and 60, slighter increases in bone loss were observed.Conclusions:  The application of this model can only be recommended for short (≤15 days) observation periods. The distance method should be preferred to the area method.
