Notes: A direct comparison of aqueous and non-aqueous tape casting was investigated. Aqueous and non-aqueous formulations were developed for tape casting of aluminum nitride (AlN) powder. The oxygen content of the AlN powder in aqueous ball-milling media had a slight increase, but it did not almost influence the thermal conductivity of AlN substrate. The solid loading of aqueous AlN slurry was higher than that of the non-aqueous one, but its viscosity was lower than that of non-aqueous AlN slurry. Under the same burnout program, the residual carbon content in aqueous AlN green sheet was lower than that of the non-aqueous one. The thermal conductivity of the aqueous AlN substrate sintered at 1850°C for 3 h was 138 W·(m·K)−1, which was close to 142 W·(m·K)−1 of the non-aqueous AlN substrate.

Notes: A double–inverse microemulsion (IME) process is used for synthesizing nano-sized Ba2Ti9O20 powders. The crystallization of powders thus obtained and the microwave dielectric properties of the sintered materials were examined. The IME-derived powders are of nano-size (∼21.5 nm) and possess high activity. The BaTi5O11, intermediate phase resulted when the IME-derived powders were calcined at 800°C (4 h) in air. However, high-density Ba2Ti9O20 materials with a pure triclinic phase (Hollandite like) can still be obtained by sintering such a BaTi5O11 dominated powders at 1250°C/4 h. The phase transformation kinetics for the IME-derived powders were markedly enhanced when air was replaced by O2 during the calcinations and sintering processes. Both the calcination and densification temperatures were reduced by around 50°C compared with the process undertaken in air. The microwave dielectric properties of sintered materials increase with the density of the samples, resulting in a large dielectric constant (K≅39) and high-quality factor (Q×f≅28 000 GHz) for samples possessing a density higher than 95% theoretical density, regardless of the sintering atmosphere. Overfiring dissociates Ba2Ti9O20 materials and results in a poor-quality factor.

Notes: Zinc aluminate (ZnAl2O4) particles have been synthesized by the hydrothermal method using NH3·H2O as a pH adjustment mineralizer. Experimental results showed that ZnAl2O4 particle size was dependent on the precursor pH, and could be controlled through pH adjustment. It was 5.5, 11.5, and 27 nm when the precursor pH was 8.2, 9.3, and 10.5, respectively. On the other hand, the particle size distribution changed broader with increase in pH. These differences were attributable to the different NH3·H2O function. NH3·H2O was mainly used as a base at lower pH (〈9.0), while its complex function predominated at higher one (〉9.5). From thermodynamic viewpoint, the rate-limiting steps were dissolution of Al(OH)3 and γ-AlO(OH) to Al(OH)4− at lower and higher pH, respectively. The newly formed γ-AlO(OH) with high reactivity was the critical factor in the synthesis of bimodal particles. Higher temperature treatment of γ-AlO(OH) could decrease the reactivity, and could be used as an aluminum source for synthesis uniform ZnAl2O4 particles.

Notes: [Auszug] What genetic changes make us so different from the chimpanzee, our closest relative? Scientists have been trying to answer this challenging question for decades, and publication of the draft of the chimpanzee genome (page 69 of this issue) is a significant step forward. The species studied ...

Notes: Abstract. In the SUSY SO(10) GUT context, we study the exclusive processes $B \to K^{(*)} l^ + l^-(l = \mu,\tau)$ . Using the Wilson coefficients of the relevant operators including the new operators $\smash{Q_{1,2}^{(\prime)}}$ which are induced by neutral Higgs boson (NHB) penguins, we evaluate some possible observables associated with these processes like the invariant mass spectrum (IMS), lepton pair forward-backward asymmetry (FBA), lepton polarization asymmetries etc. In this model the contributions from Wilson coefficients $C_{Q_{1,2}}^\prime$ , among new contributions, are dominant. Our results show that the NHB effects are sensitive to the FBA, $\mathrm {d}L/\mathrm {d}\hat{s}$ , and $\mathrm {d}T/\mathrm {d}\hat{s}$ of $B \to K^{(*)} \tau^ + \tau^-$ decay, which are expected to be measured in B factories, the deviation of $\mathrm {d}T/\mathrm {d}\hat{s}$ in $B \to K \mu^ + \mu^-$ can reach 0.1 from SM, which could be seen in B factories, and the average of the normal polarization $\mathrm {d}N/\mathrm {d}\hat{s}$ can reach several percent for $B \to K \mu^ + \mu^-$ and it is 0.05 or so for $B\to K \tau^ + \tau^-$ , which could be measured in the future super B factories and provide useful information to probe new physics and discriminate different models.
