Description: Movements pattern records of the Mar del Plata inshore fishing fleet during the 1997/98 and 1998/99 chub mackerel fishing seasons (October-January) allowed to observe that there is coincidence between the decrease of the 1983-1997 catches with respect to years previous to the 1975/76 "critical season" and a reduction of the inshore fleet fishing grounds which modifies accessibility of the fleet to the chub mackerel schools. Biostatistical and gonadal development results obtained in the Mar del Plata area (i.e., presence of adults during almost the whole fishing season which overlaps with the spawning season) do not differ significantly from those obtained during previous fishing seasons. As recommended in previous papers, chub mackerel fishing operations should not be carried out when sea surface temperatures reach 19°C. The opening of a new fishing ground ("El Rincón") for regular chub mackerel catches, mainly during August, decreases the marketing possibilities of the Mar del Plata chub mackerel inshore fishing fleet which operates later on (October-January). Therefore, it is suggested that a fishing quota be applied to said fleet.

Description: In August 1996 acoustic methods were employed to estimate mackerel (Scomber japonicus) abundance in the Buenos Aires, Argentina shelf area of "El Rincón" (4,287 mn2), located between 39°- 40° 30' S. Results showed a biomass estimate of 77,260 t. ASIMRAD EK-500 equipment operated with a 38 KHz split-beam transducer was used. Midwater fishing trawls were employed to identify echotraces and to collect mackerel samples.Trawls 4 and 5 were the most successful. Samples included only adult fish (310-470 mm Lt and ages ranging 2-11). Length and weight growth parameters and mortality rates were estimated. Analysis of the stomach contents revealed that mackerel was feeding exclusively on zooplankters over 2 mmlength. The analysis of the characteristics (dimensions and density) of the mackerel shoals allowed to detect two areas of concentration above and below 40°S latitude. The northern area was characterized by relatively small schools of medium density similar to those of the Mar del Plata area. In the southern zone, large schools of high density that account for almost 92 of the total biomass were found.Differences between both areas were also detected when plankton distribution was analyzed. Higher abundances of the dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense corresponded to the southern area. On the contrary, higher zooplankton biomass was detected northerly of 40°S. From an oceanographic standpoint, the presence of mackerel was associated to relatively higher salinity values. As a result of the different data analyzed it is suggested that, during this time of the year, the species shows a migratory pattern from the intermediate shelf to coastal areas.

Description: The chub mackerel Scomber japonicus and anchovy Engraulis anchoita commercial landings at the Mar del Plata (Buenos Aires prov., Argentina) seaport during the September 1999-January 2000 period are studied. A total of 14 chub mackerel samples were taken for total length measurements exclusively and 5 anchovy sub-samples and 1 chub mackerel sub-sample were analyzed to record individual data total length, weight, sex, sexual stage, age from otoliths readings . Most of the fish caught for both species were adults and only a small fraction of chub mackerel juveniles was found in December 1999. Length-at-fifty-percent-maturity was calculated, length-weight and length-age relationships were fitted and length growth parameters estimated. Sea surface temperature SST in the fishing area was recorded on board of a sampling boat. Chub mackerel CPUE, that showed a decrease when SST increased, was calculated. Data from landings of the different fleets for both species as well as the significance of these resources to the small purse-seine fleet economy were analyzed.
