    Abstract: Sexual maturation in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) results in loss of appetite and weight during spawning, leads to increased production time required to reach desired harvest size, and results in greater mortality and reduced food conversion efficiency. Thus, methods to stop or delay maturation are urgently needed. In the present study, the effect of continuous light (LL) treatment on maturation was tested in combination with different exercise levels in seawater tanks compared with controls under natural light. LL treatment in lightproof tanks arrested gonadal development for at least 8 months. Exercising Atlantic cod by forcing them to swim with 0, 0.5, or 1 body length per second from the summer solstice had no effect on incidence of maturation either under natural light or under LL. Growth was enhanced in the LL groups compared with the NL groups, mainly as a result of the weight loss of the NL groups during spawning.

    Abstract: The effect of electronic data storage tags (DSTs) on the growth of cod Gadus morhua was evaluated in laboratory and field experiments. In the first laboratory experiment, large DSTs (60 × 18 mm, 3 g in water ) attached externally for 3 months did not have any effect ( anova , P   〉  0·05) on the growth of adult cod (mean ±  s . d . 65 ± 4·5 cm total length) relative to untagged adult cod. In a second experiment, small DSTs (34 × 11 mm, 1·5 g in water) implanted into young cod (48·1 ± 4·4 cm) for an 8 month period did not have any effect upon the growth relative to untagged controls ( anova , P   〉  0·05). Length data returned from tagging experiments conducted on adult cod (57·3 ± 7·5 cm) in the North Sea showed that the growth of fish tagged either externally or internally with large DSTs was not different ( t ‐test, P   〉  0·05). Attachment wounds, however, provided evidence that external attachment of DSTs should be avoided unless sensor configuration requires access to the external environment, and that internal implantation should be preferred whenever possible.

    Abstract: To build a better data foundation for recruitment models of north‐east Arctic cod Gadus morhua the construction of fecundity models reflecting variation in the nutritional status of the fish was attempted. The models were based on fecundity time series covering 9 years within the period 1986–2004 and included both general and year‐specific approaches. Initial data analysis revealed that the potential fecundity ( F P ) (standing stock of vitellogenic oocytes) was significantly reduced as the vitellogenic oocytes increased in size towards the start of spawning. Histological examination strongly indicated that this seasonal reduction was caused by atresia. Regression analysis showed that the F P was positively correlated to fish total length ( L T ) and the Fulton’s condition factor ( K ). A multiple regression including data for all years using fish L T , K and mean oocyte diameter ( D O ) as independent predictors described the F P with an r 2 = 0·94. This was considerably higher than comparable univariate L T or mass‐based regressions. These univariate regressions had fairly high r 2 values when split by years, but not as high as found for year‐specific multiple regressions. An important application for individual‐based fecundity models may be to generate outputs that can be fed into stock level fecundity and recruitment models. Overall, the multivariate models seemed to be the most accurate. The multivariate model including mean D O , however, also had the potential to correct for maturity and thus provide unbiased fecundity comparisons between years, stocks and locations.

    Abstract: An experimental study was performed to disentangle parental and environmental effects on the growth of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua larvae and juveniles. Eggs were collected during the spawning season from spawning pairs (families) kept separately in specially designed spawning compartments. Newly hatched larvae were released simultaneously into two mesocosms of 2500 and 4400 m 3 . Larval growth was monitored by sampling over a 10 week period, after which juveniles were transferred to on‐growing tanks, where they were tagged and kept for up to 2 years. Maternal origin was determined by individual microsatellite genotyping of the larvae ( n = 3949, 24 families) and juveniles ( n = 600). The results showed significant positive correlations between egg size and larval size during the whole mesocosm period. Correlations, however, weakened with time and were no longer significant at the first tank‐rearing sampling at an age of 9 months. Significant family‐specific differences in growth were observed. The coefficient of variation ( c.v. ) was calculated in order to examine variation in standard length of larvae during the mesocosm period. Inter‐family c.v. was on average 69% of intra‐family c.v. Differences in zooplankton densities between the two mesocosms were reflected in larval growth, condition factor and c.v. Low food abundance appeared to reduce c.v. and favour growth of larvae that showed relatively slow growth at high food abundance. It is suggested that genetically determined variation in growth potential is maintained by environmental variability.

    Abstract: Ndjaula, H. O. N., Hansen, T., Krüger-Johnsen, M., and Kjesbu, O. S. 2009. Oocyte development in captive Atlantic horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 66: 623–630. This 13-month experimental study focused on developing oocyte production in 101 adult female Atlantic horse mackerel. In addition, proxies of energy patterns in relation to oocyte development were investigated. The fish were captured off western Norway and fed to satiation from October 2005 to November 2006 in two replicate adjacent circular tanks. Monthly histological examination of the ovaries indicated that vitellogenic oocytes were present at all times throughout the study period, but that oocyte development did not progress past the incipient migratory nucleus stage. The oocyte diameter (OD) threshold between pre-vitellogenic and vitellogenic oocytes and the mean OD of the leading cohort were investigated, and no hiatus was observed within the OD size distribution around the 185-µm pre-vitellogenic and vitellogenic threshold. Variation in gonadosomatic index, hepatosomatic index, condition factor, and fat content (as measured by the use of a Distell Fish Fatmeter) increased with oocyte development. The observed development of oocyte recruitment and the absence of a hiatus in the oocyte distribution are characteristics of an asynchronous spawner. The species seems to have a prolonged spawning season, judging from the advanced and variety of maturity stages throughout the study period.
