    Abstract: This purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effect of rubber deposits on pavement friction characteristics on the basis of macroscopic and microscopic measurements. Runway pavement sections at the Kaohsiung (Taiwan) International Airport were chosen for field and laboratory testing over a 16-month period. In the first step of the field testing, the monthly variation in friction was established by using the Saab surface friction tester (SFT) and British pendulum testing. In the second step, macro-texture measurements were made by the grease patch method. The last step of field testing was to take samples of rubber deposits for laboratory analyses by optical microscope and scanning electron microscopy. Results showed that rubber deposits had strong effects on runway surface friction. An aircraft landing appeared to result in an increase in the thickness of rubber deposits by approximately 0.05 μm. The microstructure of rubber deposits was shown to be accumulated by the directional distribution of multiple layers of polymer scale. The friction value measured in the backward direction was higher than that measured in the forward direction. The rate of decrease in the SFT friction value was found to be about 0.05 for an increase in rubber thickness of 0.1 mm.

    Abstract: The effect of 2,4,6-trimethyl-N-(meta-3-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-benzenesulfonamide (m-3M3FBS), a presumed phospholipase C (PLC) activator, on cytosolic free Ca 2+ concentrations ([Ca 2+ ] i ) in Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells is unclear. This study explored whether m-3M3FBS changed basal [Ca 2+ ] i levels in suspended MDCK cells using fura-2 as a Ca 2+ -sensitive fluorescent dye. M-3M3FBS at concentrations between 0.1 and 20 μM increased [Ca 2+ ] i in a concentration-dependent manner. The Ca 2+ signal was decreased by removing extracellular Ca 2+ . M-3M3FBS-induced Ca 2+ influx was inhibited by the store-operated Ca 2+ channel blockers nifedipine, econazole, and SK & F96365, and by the phospholipase A2 inhibitor aristolochic acid. In Ca 2+ -free medium, 20-μM m-3M3FBS pretreatment abolished the [Ca 2+ ] i rise induced by the endoplasmic reticulum Ca 2+ pump inhibitors thapsigargin (TG) and cyclopiazonic acid (CPA). Conversely, pretreatment with TG or CPA partly reduced m-3M3FBS-induced [Ca 2+ ] i rise. The inhibition of PLC with U73122 did not alter m-3M3FBS-induced [Ca 2+ ] i rise. Collectively, in MDCK cells, m-3M3FBS induced [Ca 2+ ] i rises by causing PLC-independent Ca 2+ release from the endoplasmic reticulum and Ca 2+ influx via store-operated Ca 2+ channels and other unidentified Ca 2+ channels.

    Abstract: Postischemic cerebral blood flow and blood volume changes have been associated with angiogenesis; nevertheless, the spatiotemporal changes in vascular permeability, vascular density, and vessel size have not been investigated. Here we report a prolonged increase in vascular permeability from day 3 to day 21 after ischemia, in particular in the reperfused outer cortical layers and leptomeninges. Increased cerebral blood volume (CBV) was observed from day 3 to day 14, whereas increased blood volume in small vessels, primarily capillaries, was noticed from day 7 to day 14 in the reperfused cortex. An initial decrease in vascular density and a reciprocal increase in vessel size were observed within the reperfused cortex at days 1 and 3 after ischemia. Immunohistological analysis confirmed a similar decrease in microvessel density and an increase in vessel size in vessels with a diameter greater than 30 μm. These large-sized vessels exhibited intense basic fibroblast growth factor and endothelial nitric oxide synthase immunoreactivity, suggesting the growth of collateral vessels. By contrast, a late increase in vascular density was noticed in the reperfused outer cortex at days 14 and 21 after ischemia. Together, these findings suggest that the early phase of CBV increase is likely because of the improvement in collateral circulation, whereas the late phase of CBV increase is attributed to the surge of angiogenesis.

    Abstract: Predialysis nephrology care is thought to affect morbidity and mortality in hemodialysis patients. This study evaluated the impact of different patterns of predialysis care on outcomes of patients undergoing chronic peritoneal dialysis (PD). Design Retrospective cohort. Setting and Participants 275 patients enrolled from January 1997 to March 2005 in a medical center in North Taiwan who recently initiated dialysis were classified according to early or late referral to nephrologists (≥ 6 or 〈 6 months of dialysis), planned or late implantation of Tenckhoff catheters (absence or presence of preceding emergent hemodialysis), and early or late start of dialysis [glomerular filtration rate (GFR) ≥ 5 or 〈 5 mL/minute/1.73 m 2 ]. Main Outcome Measures All-cause mortality and hospitalization. Results During a median follow-up of 2.5 years, 41 deaths, 38 transfers to hemodialysis, and 26 renal transplantations occurred. Late start of dialysis was associated with a significant survival benefit (log rank, p = 0.012) and, along with planned implantation of catheters, exhibited a reduced risk for all-cause hospitalization (log rank, p = 0.025, 0.013). The predictors of overall mortality included baseline GFR [hazard ratio (HR) 1.18, p = 0.023], age (HR 1.07, p 〈 0.001), and diabetes (HR 3.64, p = 0.001); whereas the risk factors for all-cause hospitalization included age (HR 1.02, p = 0.012), late implantation of catheters (HR 1.78, p = 0.011), and diabetes (HR 1.92, p = 0.005). The timing of nephrology referral did not affect either death or hospitalization. Conclusions Our data do not support earlier initiation of PD, but underscore the importance of planned implantation of catheters before commencement of chronic PD.
