Abstract: The influences of the size of suspended particles in the medium and chemical structural characteristics of the medium on the threshold of the optical breakdown are researched experimentally. The experimental results show that the optical breakdown threshold first rises slowly in accord with the size of suspended particles in the medium, while later it rises sharply (when the diameters of the particles are less than 0.22μm). By purifying the medium, the optical breakdown threshold can be increased; thus the phase-conjugation fidelity, the reflectivity of the energy and the stability of SBS increase correspondingly. Generally speaking, better protection to the inner chemical bond offered by the outer atoms, and less valence electron together with higher ionization energies of the outer atoms will lead to higher optical breakdown threshold of the media.

Abstract: Avalanche ionization model is introduced to the coupled stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) equations. Numerical simulation of SBS energy reflectivity as a function of pump intensity is made with and without the optical breakdown factor in the equations. In the experiment, purified and unpurified CCl4 media are studied with an Nd:YAG laser system with Q switch, the results are found to agree well with the numerical solutions. It is observed that under conditions that the optical breakdown does not occur, the energy reflectivity increases nonlinearly with pump intensity until reaching a certain value above which it tends to grow slowly. In cases with the breakdown, the energy reflectivity first increases nonlinearly with the pump intensity to a peak value and then decreases dramatically as optical breakdown occurs. The stability of energy reflectivity in the cases without optical breakdown is obviously better than cases otherwise.

Abstract: According to the relationships between the chemical structure of the medium and the absorption coefficient, a series of new media with small absorption coefficients has been found, which are suited for use as the amplifier media. The stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) parameters of these media have been calculated or measured when the pump wavelength is 1.064 μm. Choosing C2Cl4 and C4Cl6 as amplifier medium and C2H5OH as generator medium, we investigated the performances of two-cell SBS system pumped by Nd:YAG Q-switched laser. The C2H5OH has a high optical breakdown threshold and the Brillouin frequency shift of C2H5OH is close to those of C2Cl4 and C4Cl6. The results indicate that the system has the characteristics of high power-load ability, high phase-conjugation fidelity and high energy reflectivity stability.
