Notes: SYNOPSIS. We demonstrated previously microbodies in Euglena gracilis grown in the dark on 2-carbon substrates. We have now established in Euglena the particulate nature of enzymes known in other organisms to be localized in microbodies (glyoxysomes and leaf peroxisomes). On a linear sucrose gradient the glyoxylate cycle enzymes band together at a nigner equilibrium density (1.20 g/cm3) than mitochondrial marker enzymes (1.17 g/cm3), establishing the existence in Euglena of glyoxysomes similar to those of higher plants. Glyoxylate (hydroxypyruvate) reductase and, under certain conditions, also glycolate dehydrogenase co-band with the glyoxylate cycle enzymes, suggesting that Euglena glyoxysomes, like those of higher plants, may contain peroxisomal-type enzymes. Catalase, an enzyme characteristic of microbodies from a variety of sources, was not detected in Euglena.

Notes: Abstract The exchange parameters of BaFe12O19 have been calculated from the temperature dependence of the saturation magnetization using the molecular field theory. Under the assumption that the exchange parameters do not change for diamagnetic substitutions of the Fe3+ ions, it is shown that the temperature coefficient of the magnetization at room temperature cannot be decreased without decreasing the magnetization. Diamagnetic substitution in the octahedralf 2 site would solely increase the saturation magnetization.

Notes: Summary Possible regulation of glomerular filtration rate by tubulo-glomerular feedback from a late tubular site was studied in microperfusion experiments on rats. During perfusion of loops of Henle with varying flow rates and different perfusion solutions, filtration rate of the perfused nephrons was measured by total proximal fluid collection and inulin determination. During perfusion with isotonic Ringer's solution nephron filtration rate decreased significantly with increasing perfusion rates. Since proximal intratubular pressure was experimentally kept constant, this response must reflect decreased glomerular capillary pressure. Increasing the flow rate during perfusion with isotonic sodium sulfate or mannitol solutions was not associated with significant changes of filtration rate. Thus some correlate of the flow rate of normal loop of Henle fluid can affect filtrate formation. Such an effect may be mediated by the juxtaglomerular apparatus. Our results are consistent with the concept that the triggering signal is a function of the amount of distal sodium that is able to permeate the cell membrane at the receptor site rather than of distal intratubular sodium concentration.

Notes: Summary Kidney extracts from several amphibian species were incubated with homologous and non-homologous serum. In a series of experiments the angiotensin formation was studied by enzyme kinetic technics, using acidified, dialysed kidney extracts and dialysed serum. In other experiments incubations were performed in the presence of Dowex 50W-X2 (NH4 +) resin. The angiotensin was then eluted from the Dowex and its pressor activity tested on the rat. If no Dowex was used in the incubation mixtures the range of the angiotensin formation was from 0 to 210 ng angiotensin formed per ml of serum. If Dowex was added, the values ranged from 0 to 300 ng angiotensin formed per ml of serum. Often angiotensinase was still present in the incubation mixtures, reducing the amount of detectable angiotensin in the incubation mixtures. Dowex protects the formed angiotensin from amphibian angiotensinases. The data suggest, however, that a large amount of angiotensin adsorbed onto the Dowex cannot be recovered. There is at least some species or class specifity of the renin-angiotensin system of the amphibians. Kidney extract of one species incubated with non-homologous serum produced less pressor substance than the same amount of kidney extract when incubated with homologous serum. Amphibian adrenal pressor substances are—at least in part—adsorbed on Dowex and can be eluted from it in a similar fashion as angiotensin.

Notes: Summary When irradiated for a period of 48 hours with light of restricted wave-lengths in the red and far-red regions, maximum anthocyanin content in hypocotyls was found at 730 nm; in cotyledons the yield at 716 was almost equal to that at 730 nm. In hypocotyls the effectiveness of 703, 716 and 760 nm light was much increased if plants were transferred to red light after 6 hours. The intermediate wave-length band centred at 703 nm was ineffective when given alone but led to a high yield if followed by red light. When given before far-red light (standard far-red field), 6 hours at 703 nm reduced anthocyanin yield in the same way as red light; when given after 6 hours of far-red, however, 703 nm light did not act like red light to sustain a high rate of anthocyanin synthesis. It is concluded that two reactions are involved in the photocontrol of anthocyanin formation in turnip seedlings.

Notes: Summary A comparison was made between in-vivo phytochrome difference spectra of light- and dark-grown plant material. Spectral differences were found to be caused, at least to a large extent, by screening by chlorophyll and not by differences in phytochrome. Presence of chlorophyll affects the phytochrome in leaves differently from that in stems. In cotyledons the absorption maximum in the R part of the spectrum shifts towards shorter wavelengths, in FR to longer ones. Concomitantly, the R/FR ratio diminishes; this was confirmed in a model experiment. In stem tissue the peak positions remain the same but the isosbestic point shifts towards longer wavelengths and the R/FR ratio increases. In Viola, however, the phytochrome appears to be different from the normal type. In the etiolated hypocotyl, where the difference spectrum of phytochrome is presumably not distorted by chlorophyll, the R and FR maximum was found to be at a shorter wavelength than in hypocotyls from Cornus and turnip or from stem tissue of dark-grown pea.

Notes: Summary Addition of water to dry seeds of Pinus spp. increased the detectable phytochrome immediately and the level reached after 2 h in darkness was retained for at least 20 h at 20° C. The in-vivo difference spectra of phytochrome in Pinus seeds showed absorption maxima at approximately 656 nm and at 710 nm to 715 nm. An isosbestic point was observed at about 680 nm. Shifts towards longer wavebands were obtained especially with tissue containing substantial amounts of chlorophyll and are, therefore, not due to diverse types of phytochrome. Embryo tissue of Ginkgo biloba showed also a maximum in R at 655 nm but the peak in FR occurred at a longer wavelength, 725 nm. This was confirmed by determining action spectra for the phototransformations Pr⇌Pfr. The dark reactions of phytochrome in Pinus differed from those in Ginkgo. Following a short exposure to R light, the total quantity of photoreversible pigment in Pinus seeds remained constant for several hours in darkness at room temperature. Dark reversion of Pfr occurred extremely rapidly and tPfr 50 was only 0.3 h. In Ginkgo embryos total phytochrome in darkness following a brief exposure to R light was not completely stable. Reversion of Pfr was much slower and tPfr 50 was slightly less than 2 h. It is concluded that, at least as regards the spectral qualities, the phytochrome in Gymnospermae differs from that of Angiospermae and is apparently also not identical in Coniferae and Ginkgoinae.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die latero-laterale Choledocho-Duodenostomie ist die häufigste biliodigestive Anastomose.
Notes: Summary Latero-lateral choledochoduodenostomy is the most frequent biliodigestive anastomosis. It is technically easy, the mortality is low, and postoperative complications are almost negligible. It must be emphasized very strongly that choledochoduodenostomy is not a permanent substitute solution in the case of situations in the distal bile duct or at the papilla which can only be controlled with difficulty or not at all. It leaves the papillary stenosis with prepapillary stones unimproved and in addition causes deposition of indigestible food particles in the biliary tract, which in turn leads to cholangiophytiasis. Choledochoduodenostomy has a very narrow, circumscribed indication: inoperable carcinoma of the pancreas, of the papilla, or of the common bile duct.
