    Notes: : Two soil water functions, hydraulic conductivity K(θ) and diffusivity D(θ), were estimated by two methods In one method D(θ) was estimated according to Bruce and Klute (1956), and K(θ) was calculated from D(θ) and the retention curve. In the second, K(θ) was obtained by field estimation, with D(θ) being calculated from K(θ) and the retention curve.The criterion of reliability for both methods was agreement between experimental and predicted distribution of soil water content. The prediction was made using the functions K(θ) and D(θ) as soil water parameters in both methods.Theoretical and experimental agreement was generally good. The first method, however, was found to be best for high soil water content and the second for low soil water content. In addition, the water content at the end of the monotonic increase of function D(θ) (estimated according to Bruce and Klute 1956) was found to be about the upper limit of field soil water content. It can be used as a boundary condition in the numerical solution of a cylindrical model of infiltration from a trickle source. It was concluded that the best agreement between theory and experiment can be found when the combined values of D(θ) and K(θ) from both methods of estimation are used.

    Description: The Victoria Land Transect Cruise with the Italian research vessel "Italica", carried out in February 2004, was the first large-scale attempt to obtain benthic samples systematically along a latitudinal transect along the Antarctic Ross Sea shelf. Along the transect, samples were taken in five areas (Cape Russell, Terra Nova Bay, Coulman Island, Cape Hallet and Cape Adare) along a depth gradient ranging from 80m to 515m. Sampling was carried out using a Rauschert dredge with a mesh size of 500 µm, as the main emphasis was on smaller peracarid crustaceans. Distribution of higher taxonomic groups based on total abundance was found as follows: crustaceans (71-83%), polychaetes (12-16%), molluscs (3-7%), echinoderms (0-2%). Exceptions were the areas Cape Adare with an increased occurrence of molluscs (38%) and Coulmann Island with a mass occurrence of polychaetes (63%). The crustaceans were dominated by amphipods (32%-66%), isopods (13-30%), tanaids (4-28%), and cumaceans (〈1-35%). Especially in the southernmost areas Terra Nova Bay and Cape Russel, an increase in abundance of cumaceans with increasing latitude was found. Within the cumacean fauna of the Ross Sea, the most abundant families were Leuconidae (8%-85%), Nanastacidae (10-92%) and Diastylidae (3-16%). The systematic collection of smaller crustaceans yielded a high amount of species new to the area under investigation, especially for the Peracarida. A more detailed faunal analysis of the crustaceans is presently under way.

Data presented from this survey are based on Rauschert dredge samples, which were taken at four areas at depth ranging from 84 m to 515 m. A cluster analysis based on relative numbers of abundance was performed and demonstrated a change in community structure depending on the location along the latitudinal transect, a change in community structure with depth was not recorded. Dominant taxon of the Ross Sea fauna were the Arthropoda (61 %), followed by Polychaeta (20 %), Mollusca (14 %) and Echinodermata (3 %). Total number of abundance decreased with depth with an exception at Cape Russell, whereas a trend in biomass was not documented. Abundance and biomass proportions of major taxa changed gradually along the latitudinal transect.

    Description: The following study was the first to describe composition and structure of the peracarid fauna systematically along a latitudinal transect off Victoria Land (Ross Sea, Antarctica). During the 19th Antarctic expedition of the Italian research vessel Italica in February 2004, macrobenthic samples were collected by means of a Rauschert dredge with a mesh size of 500 µm at depths between 85 m and 515 m. The composition of peracarid crustaceans, especially Cumacea was investigated. Peracarida contributed 63% to the total abundance of the fauna. The peracarid samples were dominated by amphipods (66%), whereas cumaceans were represented with 7%. Previously, only 13 cumacean species were known, now the number of species recorded from the Ross Sea increased to 34. Thus, the cumacean fauna of the Ross Sea, which was regarded as the poorest in terms of species richness, has to be considered as equivalent to that of other high Antarctic areas. Most important cumacean families concerning abundance and species richness were Leuconidae, Nannastacidae, and Diastylidae. Cumacean diversity was lowest at the northernmost area (Cape Adare). At the area off Coulman Island, which is characterized by muddy sediment, diversity was highest. Diversity and species number were higher at the deeper stations and aAbundance increased with latitude. A review of the bathymetric distribution of the Cumacea from the Ross Sea reveals that most species distribute across the Antarctic continental shelf and slope. So far, only few deep-sea records justify the assumption of a shallow-waterdeep-sea relationship in some species of Ross Sea Cumacea, which is discussed from an evolutionary point of view.
